Let’s see what ya got.

I’m not a big Christmas movie guy unless it’s funny
I enjoy this movie quite a bit.

Sweet! What’s a Christmas without a message board argument over whether or not Die Hard is a X-mas movie? Which it is of course.
Elf
Violent Night
Die Hard (I know @Weaselpuppy would rank this one higher)

My personal favorite is Princess Bride
- the main plot is not but the opening setting sets it up
Fact- The movie is set in Los Angeles. Los Angeles as it is widely known is actually the seventh circle of Hell. This was evident back even when the movie was being filmed let alone the intense hellification that has occurred over the past 35 years. No one is going to set a Christmas movie in Hell. Except maybe Matt and Trey.
Fact- Nakatomi Plaza was owned by the Japanese. The Japanese don’t celebrate Christmas because other than the work of a few very dedicated missionaries of which one of my buddies actually is, the Japanese are not Christians. No one is going to set a Christmas movie in the seventh circle of Hell and inside a giant Heathen building
Fact- Hostess Twinkies are actual poison. The only things that can consume them and not die are demons, roaches and Bears fans if they’re packaged in Ziploc bags and eaten at the game. Christmas Feast is about good nourishing food of which Twinkies certainly are not so therefore it can’t possibly be a Christmas movie.
Fact- the German name Hans means gift from God while the German name Gruber means miner. So the entire premise is that the quote unquote hero is attempting to kill the gift from God and ends up dropping him to his death much like his ancestors would have died in a mining accident, making it extra traumatic and confirming that the influence of the circle of Hell has even gotten to John McClane
Fact- the tele “journalist” douchebag who gets his ass kicked towards the end of the movie is the actual happy ending and is the enduring moral of the story
It’s a Wonderful Life
Not even close
The whole family knows I will go into the front TV room and watch by myself
Christmas movie?
I do agree that Los Angelenos (Dodgers fans in particular) do not deserve Christmas.
Many of the best X-Mas toys of my childhood were Japanese made. This only reinforces the x-mas motif of Die Hard.
That X-mas is a day of sanctuary from the pressures of not eating things that will hasten your demise is another wonderful aspect of the holiday season.
This sounds like Gruber is/was warning about AI. A gift to society during the season of giving.
X-mad movies and their happy endings ![]()
Not sure there are 10
- Elf
- Christmas Vacation
- Scrooged
- A Christmas Story
- The Santa Clause
Die Hard is not and never should be considered a Christmas movie. Just because it’s set during Christmas doesn’t make it a Christmas themed movie.
Obviously I’m not into the “heartwarming” themed movies. Polar Express animation is creepy to the point of distraction. Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a favorite, but is technically a Thanksgiving movie.
I’ve never seen, and have zero interest in seeing “It’s a Wonderful Life”. I’ve seen all the other “classics”. Once was plenty.
Greatest Ever! Heartwarming tale of…forgiveness, redemption and unconditional love.
Bad Santa

Au contraire. They along with the rest of the Asian countries have co-opted it into a strange secular, commercial holiday (though I suppose a good chunk of our holidays are now strictly commercial, like Valentine’s Day). Replete with lights and Santa and gifts, gifts, gifts!
The difference is in Japan if Santa decides that you were naughty you have to commit Seppuku.
I’ve seen the classics so many times in my life that they just aren’t fun anymore so I tend to gravitate more towards the off beat christmas movies like this now.
Bad Santa is awesome. I really like Fred Claus, and I like Red One that came out a couple years ago.
Gotta go with A Christmas Story. ‘Randy lay there like a slug, it was his only defense’ makes me laugh every time…oh yeah, and Die Hard, which is definitely a Christmas movie
- Christmas Vacation
- Klaus
- Christmas Story
- Die Hard
- Bad Moms Christmas
- Love Actually
- The Ref
- Feast of the Seven Fishes
- Bad Santa
- Red One (I actually liked it
the key is low expectations) - Comfort and Joy (1984)
Most of Christmas Vacation was filmed in LA.
They absolutely do celebrate Christmas, just not as a religious holiday, but a capitalist holiday. And if you try and get self-righteous on me about Americans, capitalism, and the spirit of Christmas, we’re gonna have problems …
Hans was around 40 during the events at Nakatomi (1988). Which means he would’ve been bored in late 40’s Germany. “Hans” was the most popular boys name across Germany (you can guess what it replaced), rendering everything you wrote plainly absurd. It wasn’t about ‘gift from God,’ it was a about remaining grounded in the historical and regional context.
In National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, the happy ‘ending’ includes the boss, Frank Shirley, literally getting his ass kicked, rendering your point moot.
Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
It’s replete with Christmas songs, including RUN-DMC’s famous “Christmas in Hollis,” along with “Ode to Joy” and “Let it Snow, Let It Snow".”
John McClane’s wife’s name is “Holly.”
As mentioned, the Japanese DO celebrate Christmas, and Nakatomi—a CAPITALIST INSTITUTION—is decorated with garlands everywhere, and trees everywhere. The people are literally gathering … for a Christmas party.
Speaking of which, Harry Ellis loves playing in snow.
When Theo cracks the safe (he said it required a ‘miracle’) Gruber responds, “It’s Christmas, Theo, it’s the time of miracles.”
A dead terrorist dresses as Santa Claus in the elevator.
When McClane drops Gruber, he says “Merry Christmas, Mother ■■■■■■.”
The last words of the ENTIRE FILM are, “Merry Christmas, Argyle” and Argyle responds with, “Merry Christmas” and adds, “If this is their idea of Christmas, I gotta be here for New Years!”
Is this “Brought to you by ChatGPT?”
If not, kudos to all of your knowledge
