So the new CFP starts today. But i dont think ANYONE expects this to be permanent.
The playoff format is going to change. Seeding will change. And of course conferences are definitely going to change. But what way will it go? The way I see it, there are 3 likely scenarios that are going to play out.
Before i get to the scenarios, the other thing that needs to happen is a salary cap for NIL, and contracts for players in terms of term. How many years are they locked in for. As well as better guard rails in place for the transfer portal. Just better hard dates in the OFF SEASON. But thats all up to the NCAA and Conferences to decide and thats going to take a while. And multiple supreme court cases i imagine.
But as for the Conference realignment and playoff format. Here are the 3 scenarios.
Option 1 - B10 v SEC League.
Aside from ND, only 1 of the wild card teams is not from the SEC or B10. And i think thats how it is going to be most years. And by expanding it to 14 or 16 wont help. If it was 16 teams this year. 8 of the 11 WC teams would have been from the SEC or B10.
So clearly the SEC and B10 are above the rest. So why not add the best of the rest to those 2 conferences and they branch off into their own league? Each conference grows to 24, they split the conferences into east and west. !
Heres what that could look like
Option 2 - Super League
A bunch of billionaires have been pushing for a super league for college football. Basically NFL lite. And they would hand select the top teams from D1 football to form the league and do their own thing. Now a bunch of different numbers have been suggested for a super league in terms of how many teams, everything from 20-64. After looking into it at length, i landed in 48. 4 divisions of 12.
So based on past football performance as well as revenue here is what the top 48 would look like
Option 3 - Power 6 Only.
The last option is the least likely unless the NCAA grows a pair, but itās the most ātraditionalā and would appease the most people. But again would require a lot of legal action to do.
So basically take the 70 power 4 teams, (plus ND, OR ST, WA ST) and add two more group of 5 teams (Boise and Tulane). And take those 72 and re organize them into 6 conferences of 12.
All 3 of the formats would be their own league. Meaning any team not in the league would not be eligible for the playoffs.
All 3 have been discussed by the NCAA as well as conference heads as well as networks.
The future of College football will be one of these outcomes. The question becomes which one do you want to see happen?
