But remember Goff is just now starting season six. if we look at each QBs seasons 3-5:
Carr
2017 96.7
2018 86.4
2019 93.9
Goff
2017 101.1
2018 86.5
2019 90.0
Their career averages so far:
Carr 92.4
Goff 91.1
I think people tend to focus on the now and forget the bigger picture. A couple years ago a Raiders fan friend of mine was ranting about how much Carr sucks and should be traded or cut. Now, he’s stoked on him. It’s a little soon IMO to judge Goff considering what he has to deal with
For reference Stafford in years 3-5
2011 97.2
2012 79.8
2013 84.2
That’s worse than any of them at those respective points in their careers
I want to agree with you, but he was just as bad in 2019 and 2020 as he is in 2021. And he had much better weapons in 19 and 20. The regression is what is so concerning. I pray to baby Jesus that he proves me wrong.
Well in 2019 his Oline got hurt and they lost some guys and went from top 5 in 2018 to 30th in 2019. He was under constant duress
In 2020 he started out really well then McVey started to change the offensive scheme and he struggled a little then was hurt. But I was impressed with his playoff performances just days after thumb surgery
I watched that game and that game made me hopeful when we traded for him. Warford got knocked out and Goff came in, seemed like he had something to prove after McVay benched him and he played well.
Where is that dude? Maybe playing the Rams brings that back out this week!? We need a fired up and confident Goff to lead this extremely young team. All these young players are looking to the QB when times get tough.
With Donald tossing aside our practice squad center? Not likely. Probably going to be a blood bath. I feel bad for Goff, he got set up to fail here in a bad way
That’s way too high. He did have an outstanding game against PITT and another one last week. Goff was probably around the 20th ranked wan through week 3. I looked and I believe he was 17 or 18 at that time. I’m not saying that QB rating is the end all be all. But there situations are not comparable and both have experienced similar peaks and troughs in their careers. Interestingly both Stafford and Carr stated fighting their ships around age 27. Goff just turned 27. Hopefully he follows their trajectories which I believe is decently common. Stardom (to some extent) defenses adjust and then the player counters. Let’s see if Goff does. I’m willing to give him one more year but with weapons.
That’s a terrific summary. Good post. That’s where I’m at. Definitely not sold on him and open to an upgrade but willing to give him some more rope given how tough his situation is this year. And I do believe that Brad feels that way as well.
If we’re going by stats, we should consider the teams they played on, coaches, and surrounding talent. Otherwise, we need to include 22021.
If this season doesn’t count, why not?
…cuz teammates matter.
I hope the fuuuch he can pull it out. If we have a Ram-level talented team and he’s flunking out, that’s gonna be rough.
I agree. I hope they go after a quarterback in 23. Take bpa with our top 5 pick. Look at receiver with our low 1st. They seriously need to look at linebackers with our 2nd or 3rd. Safety, linebacker and receiver are our 3 most talent deficient positions.
My issue with Goff beyond the numbers is that he’s soft. He bails when he gets pressured, he goes down so easy, he doesn’t have much pocket presence and he just doesn’t seem to have much fire in the belly. Not to mention the small hands leading to a lot of fumbles.
Stafford and Carr are ultra competitive and they have ability to move around in the pocket. If Goff isn’t finding an open receiver right off the bat, there is no improvisation, there are no second or third reads, the play dies pretty quickly. You need to surround him with a perfect supporting cast to maximize his abilities and thus, your teams’ ceiling is limited as a result. He’s a fine player if in the right situation but he’s not someone you hand the keys of the franchise to.
My main problem with Goff is that he doesn’t read the field fast enough. And he seems very reluctant to trust his reads when he does make the right read when the throw is over like 10 yards. I think this is why he is at his best when they run things like a play action roll out and he knows where he is going with it from the start.
I don’t think Goff trusts any of his targets or his blockers at the moment. Can’t blame him. He’s criticized for scanning the field when he gets sacked because someone whiffed on a block. Then he gets criticized for not seeing all his reads at once while not trusting protection.
Yes- ppl who like to blame QBs will see this, for sure. Completely agree with this post. People did the same shit to our last several QBs as well. Lions have had some seriously shit OL’s, WR rooms, and OCs for decades. Insanity that an organization could get it so wrong, so consistently, for so long. Truly unbelievable …as in…literlaly not believable
