4th Round, Pick 126: Lions Select OT Giovanni Manu

Who/what can be the 7th round man? I’m leaning towards WR…

We no longer have a 7th rounder. Our last pick is coming up in a few picks.

Physical freak, needs some coaching of course. Who doesn’t in the 4th? (no, ARSB doesn’t count lol). I like this pick. I’ve liked them all to be honest. Brad doesn’t want to hear about his window closing and what have you. Long term, cheap contracts, keep the train moving.

To think if he was born in Canada he might have grown up playing hockey :flushed:

We will hear draft intel in a day or so that 2-3 teams were going to take Manu within a couple picks of where Detroit traded up to select him. All teams have intel on each other and this kid being from a school in Canada against lesser comp and not at combine means 90% of draft guru’s never heard of the guy, let alone saw him play.

I wouldn’t call Jerry Rice’s kid Jerry’s kid to his face? Ok dumbass.

As is the way…

What about Jerry’s kid?

Depth is the issue with Jonah leaving. Now they drafted two OL so I’m not as worried.

Jim Carrey Thank You GIF

What’s given you this idea, that neither of them are 4th round talents?

NFL teams have 12-15 scouts who watch every single play a prospect has ever played, speak to coaches, family and friends, and have access to the player for interviews and testing, and their medical files.

Draft media watches highlights. They’ll watch maybe two hours of a big school prospect, and a lot less for FCS and small school prospects.

Year after year after year draft media is proven to be snake oil salesmen. Their mock drafts are nonsense, their player evaluations are nonsense, their draft grades are nonsense and their analytics are nonsense as well (see Brad Holmes’ comments about positional value yesterday). To call them “half assed” in comparison to NFL front office pros is a huge compliment to these douchebags.

Fair enough if you’ve dug deep yourself, and spent several hours watching tape and getting character references on Manu and Vaki, but if you’re trusting draft media then while we’re at it I’ve got a really lovely bridge to sell you.

Exactly! You end up drafting players for other teams and you don’t even get cab fare for the uber driver.

Why do we do this every year? We’ve spent that last 2+ months prognosticating these prospects up and down the draft, playing with simulators, referencing mock drafts, referencing folks like Jeremiah and Brugler.

What the heck else do you think we have to go on.

Are we just supposed to sit here and pop champagne and confetti over every single thing that Brad does? Are we not allowed to disagree with something he might do?

Tell you what, if you can reference anything that shows Manu was ever forecast to be a top 100 player I will apologize to those I’ve interacted with in this thread. Heck, I’ll even take it to the top 150. (Even though his play should be judged on being a 3rd round pick).

Why does it have to be that I have to have traveled to Canada, watched him play in person, interviewed all of this family and friends, taken him to the doctor for medical, to have an opinion on him. It’s just a stupid argument that’s meant to shut people up and enforcing a standard that can never be met.

Heck, even if I did do those things that you listed you’d still come back and say that Holmes knows more than me anyway. There is simply no way you can ever disagree with something Holmes did because someone will always try to end it with…Well Holmes knows more than you so nanananana. It’s such an immature argument.

So did Millen
So did Mayhew
So did Quinn

But folks sitting on this board right now hammer them. What the heck makes them think they knew/know more than them.

I think I feel real comfortable in sticking with 2 things.

  1. Manu was not a top 150 player in this draft.

  2. Giving up future higher assets for current lower assets will degrade the talent on your team in the long run.

You are completely entitled to see it this way (as you well know).

The problem is you’re pissing in everyone’s corn flakes, which I suspect you also know, so you probably shouldn’t be surprised by the more visceral reactions. If you’d waited a week I suspect it would have been very different.

Of course I would never tell you not to do it, this is a message board! Say what you want! It’s just you should probably expect the sort of responses you’re getting.

However, neither side of the argument can possibly know this:

Just like I can’t argue for sure the he was, you can’t argue for sure that he wasn’t. There just wasn’t enough to go on for either of us to evaluate him, as I’ve mentioned before. The teams were the only ones who had enough.

My point is that you shouldn’t put any stock whatsoever in an industry that is wrong comfortably more than 50% of the time. Jeremiah and Brugler and frauds, they do maybe 2% of the work the teams do on each prospect and their hit rate is a lot worse, yes it’s fun to chat shit about mock drafts, but no one should be taking anything any of these guys say seriously, especially when it comes to small school prospects.

On the one had you have a whole industry of frauds, and on the other hand you have a guy who’s paid to do it, and has made his name drafting. It’s odd that you should back the judgement of the fraudulent media industry who do 2% of the work over the judgement of the guy who’s made his name in the draft, but that’s up to you.

According to the frauds in the media yes. You might as well have asked a class of kindergarteners, they’ll be just as reliable

I love this pick!

  • I have faith in Brad, his scouts and process to build his board to take calculated risks.

  • My faith in Brad is strengthened due to his trust in Dan and his staff to develop the players he drafts for them… in this instance Ben and Hank.

-The culture of the locker room to support each other to succeed as a whole. He will have to face very good defensive players that have multiple tools to get to the QB.

-The Oline room. The veterans in that room will have immense influence on his development and inclusion into their line. Sewell in particular.
