Don’t get me wrong. I still think our secondary is dogshit, but of course there’s a bigger point here: if Jamo doesn’t soil himself, that Saints run might never happen.

Secondary is flawed but it played well for 60% of the game. I think there was some fatigue and I also think Shep was a bit slow on pivoting once Shough and the Saints got on the same page at throwing into the underneath area vacated by the blitz.
Defensive was uneven. Some good some bad. Just like the offense. Although the offense was sloppier IMO.

As much as we bash the secondary, remember we have two potential major additions in Branch and Joseph. I know we may not get much of anything from Joseph, but I expect Branch will be a difference maker by mid season or so.

The secondary is flawed but hopefully we can get some reinforcements back. Izien coming back will be helpful. Branch as well. Missing Kirby is the killer. He was the eraser back there playing center field.
Definitely a lot to work on but Dans teams are traditionally sloppy on the opener. This was no different.
The mental mistakes gotta get better and that secondary game plan has me worried.
The Saints had 86 offensive plays and they threw on 56 and completed 35. That’s worrisome. The turnovers were the one bright shinning positive. Overall I think they grade out as a C.
Kellen Moore was smart. He came out the second half knowing the Lions were going to play conservatively on defense and he attacked us aggressively. While the Lions were playing safe hoping to hold on.
Buffalo is going to be a problem and Sheppard has his work cut out for him. Allen is very good at stressing the boundaries and exploiting the intermediate routes. He tore us up last year doing just that.
Sheppards scheme was designed to protect the secondary. It’s clear he seas it as a weakness. I think vs Buff that won’t work. He’s going to have to be more aggressive on the back end if he wants to disrupt Allen’s rythm.
We can’t run soft conservative coverages vs Josh Allen. He will exploit us if we do. Sheppard is going to have to be more aggressive and mix up his packages more.
I expect to see a lot of two high safety looks pre snap and light boxes up front. The Lions were experimenting with light boxes in the preseason and I think this was specifically designed for Buff and GB who are good at attacking the intermediate interior. What I think Detroit is going to do is try to convince Allen to take the short stuff underneath and then hope that by extending long drives our LBers will create opportunities to make plays. He’s going to try and feed that offense into the teeth of our LBers. At least that’s my guess at what we try to do.

That’s also very true. The saints had 86 Offensive snaps vs the Lions 73. But somehow the Lions still lead in TOP.
Our defense is part of that problem but the offense is a major factor in that equation. We can’t be giving that many offensive snaps to our opponents

All good points. I hope we can marry those points with long run-heavy drives on offense. You’d think that the OL communication should take a huge step up in the second game with 3 new starters. The less exposure Josh Allen gets to the tendencies of our blitzkrieg defense, the better.
The one series that really kept NO in the game was when the Lions were close to the goal line and didn’t score. Just missed and then took a 10 yard holding penalty with the backup guard. If he doesn’t hold the DT, then it’s probably a loss of 1 or 2 yards and 2nd down from the 3 yard line. Instead it went outside the 10 and the result was a FG. As mentioned, the Lions had a number of chances to put this away but this one stuck out for me.

This is my single gripe with the offensive play calling… You move Sewell from LT to the right side, with a backup LG in the game… It telegraphs that you’re running, where you plan to run, and puts a backup with a small amount of reps in training camp in a position he’s not used to… Hated it

Alls I’m gonna say is Belichic’s Pats frequently looked like dog poop for the first couple games. Lots of rust on the starters, but more tread on the tires too
