Adam Silver says says poor people can just watch highlights

Reduced his own league down to a “highlights-based sport” while also saying he doesn’t care if the NBA is on 100 different streaming platforms and you can’t watch all the games

I think your avatar explains perfectly my feelings about the NBA and their Commish.

“That consumers can consume”

Listen to when people tell you who they are and what they think about you.

He could have just soft footed his way out and said “By increasing the platforms we want to make sure people can at least watch some games”. It’s obviously not the motivation, but it gets him through the question.

This is where we are. Companies worried only about short term profits. No thought about turning into a highlight only type of sport.. that younger viewers won’t be tied to teams, won’t watch full games, etc. You are watering down your sport. Long term it wont be recognizable, and it will fall apart. Same thing with tons of entertainment. Look at HBO.. same thing.

It’s already there. Today’s game is unrecognizable compared to the game in the 80’s, 90’s or 00’s. When a 7’ 275lb player has no place in the game if they can’t shoot a 3-pointer, I’m not sure what to call it, but it ain’t basketball.

That’s all the younger viewers want

They don’t watch movies anymore, they watch short clips.

If you cannot afford the streaming service, you can watch the WNBA. :smiling_face_with_horns:

Adam already prohibited the poor from watching NBA by helping guide the league to being a completely unwatchable product. No need to double down, Adam.

There’s no ripping off the truth. The truth is the truth.

And it’s time we let it have its day.

1970 – 26 NFL teams

2020 – 32 NFL teams

%26 increase in NFL teams

USA population 1970 – 203 million

USA population 2020 – 331 million

%63 increase in population

Numbers don’t lie, and Silver is just saying it out loud now. Sports and entertainment is only for the privileged that can afford it….as the demand (population) is outgrowing the growth of the sport.

Imagine what 2070 is gonna be like for fans? Most common people will never sit in a stadium and watch their favorite team play. It will only be through pixels on a screen.

Well it used to be at least :man_shrugging:

I remember a quote from Art Modell, he said, “the National Football League is the greatest social common denominator that man has ever known. An inner city black could be sitting next to some dowager from Hunting Valley and for those three hours, they have a common goal”.

Those days, I’m afraid are gone. We live in a world of absolute haves and everybody else. You can extrapolate it beyond sports to encompass basically everything in life. We have a handful of people wondering if they should buy their seventh yacht, while many, many others are looking just for life‘s basic necessities. And it’s only getting worse. Much worse I’m afraid. I fear for the well being of my children and grandchildren.

I think this is BS, where is our freedom? our rights? Now they are picking and choosing who can watch sports !? because of their financial status ? I would understand if it was admission fees to watch a live game-that’s crazy enough, but to say “oh you don’t make enough money” you can’t watch games What The Actual F !!?? more viewers-more ratings-more commentary and more money IF they decide to pay to watch entire games ! just crazy and wrong. Hell , they could go over to a person that has the means and watch games anyway…

A bit off topic but every time I see a picture of Adam I do a search to see if he is ill or coming off some serious medical procedure.

He looks like he clearly made a deal with the devil.

I have boiled my sports down to NFL, college wrestling (a few times a year), Internation Soccer (big games), my wife’s HS softball team, and watching HS and college football in person.

Have not watch much of any NBA/NHL/MLB in years. And I do like baseball just no time.
