Honestly I think most athletes would be kind of disappointing to spend a lot of time with.. They tend to be kind of singularly focused people.. that would be less entertaining to talk to. I would go with the people who moved into broadcasting or sports writing.. to have dinner and hear their stories.
John Madden, Rich Eisen, Steve Sabol, Tom Kowalski
Dry aged Ribeyes, lobster, caesar salad, escargot, red wine (Pinot or Zin) asparagus with Hollandaise, Jacque Pepin garlic mashed potatoes, key lime pie cheesecake and a goodly amount of Maccallan 18.
I would suggest that when they are like that it is in their prime playing the games.
For instance:
Moss - crazy pre-NFL life, he got jumped by 3-4 guys beat all their asses and got put in jail for it as a youngster which is why I think he ended up at Marshall
Many athletes have insane pre-professional lives. I love the fact that Gordy Howe insists he took the pre-season “tryouts” seriously for many of his first years afraid he might get cut….imagine. I am not a huge fan of Jordan due to how he shaded my boy Isaah but he clearly has gambling issues and his who father’s murder will always seem like we have never gotten the full or true story.
Sure some athletes are kind of boring. But so many have very inspiring life stories or takes on life. Especially the old school guys who some had to work other jobs or were not rich because they played. I get the current athletes are half borg because the money is so stupid that they become extremely focused on preparation and such.
when I first graduated college, I was a school teacher… Living in Houston, Texas, I used to teach a unit on Muhammad Ali during Black History Month… The kids loved it
