Anthony Richardson

This was a horrendous pick by the Colts. If you ask any Florida fan, they’ll tell you he quit on Florida before he went to the NFL. He really is a poor man’s Cam Newton, famous for quitting on that play in the Superbowl.

He’s not a Dan Campbell kind of guy.

Richardson needed a LOT of work coming out of college…His accuracy was awful. He showed improvement between the Combine and his Pro day but still super raw. He needed to sit for a minimum of a year and work on passing.

Richardson was very raw. Everyone knew he’d take some time to develop. Like Fields he wasn’t ready to start mentally.

Both should have rode the pine a few years.

Problem is coaches see the potential and over draft these guys. Then they feel the pressure to start them.

yup! you can’t draft number four overall give them a $40 million signing bonus and have them sit for two years

The Mahomes and Allen effect has really bit some teams in the ass who overdrafted prospects who probably should’ve gone in the third round the last few years

I’m talking out my ass here – shocking, right? – but I’m starting to worry about football character with him. I don’t know if it’s toughness or maybe he’s one of those guys that doesn’t love football but merely what he can get out of it. Perhaps I’m off on that. That’s just starting to become my impression. I had no reason to think that about him before. I could of course be way off on that.

Very possible.

I see a kid who isn’t happy with his situation myself.

Sometimes when a person hates their situation they lose drive.

All the more reason you take a kid like that and make sure he is ready for the situation.

Unfortunately, I am not sure he makes it either.

He just seems like a different cat. The bow ties for instance. Not that it’s inherently a bad thing.

Yeah he’s an odd duck.

But I see a guy trying so I’m not sure it’s a lost love of the game thing.

I see a guy who’s mentally struggling with the situation he’s in. So he checked out.

Now he’s getting the backlash from it. Real question is can he recover mentally?

I’m not sure…. It’s not a good look.

You see the clips of him playing basketball last offseason. He looks like Anthony Edwards. The athleticism is just absurd. Cartoonish.

Yeah definitely an athletically gifted player.

But we’ve seen many of them burn out over the years.

Mental makeup and supporting cast matter. What I mean is both as a player, coach, friends etc. if they don’t have the proper support or the proper mentality sometimes it’s not enough.

His “tools” are all things that are great and all, but the things he lacks are really hard to improve upon. He lacks a feel in the pocket, the ability to quickly read the defense and get the ball out, and accuracy. I’d rather have a statue in the pocket like Peyton over an athletic freak like AR.

AR has great athleticism, arm strength, speed, etc… but, those are all secondary, third, fourth, etc to what makes a great QB. This is why I didn’t want anything to do with him as our QB.

You sum up what I’ve been preaching for years.

Fans, media and even coaches drool over the possibilities of some of these athletically gifted players but most of them are missing the intangibles. They are missing them because they never needed them to be great until they reach the pros.

But guys who are less gifted have to hone their craft to succeed. That’s why pocket passer tend to win more than QBs who can run extremely well… why?

A running QB’s first instinct when he feels pressure is to run.

A pocket passers instinct it to step up or move in the pocket and deliver the ball.

The pocket passer learns the skillset of pocket presence, a quick real ease and the ability to be looking down field. They develop it through necessity.

Sure there are a rare few who are good at both.

But for every McNair I’ll give you a Marino.
For every Moon I’ll give you a Manning

Worse than Jamarcus Russell!
When you miss, you miss!

Bryce Young needs to get out of Carolina, sit on a team with actual talent and rebuild his confidence. I wouldn’t write him off, but he’s going to have to earn it the hard way now.

Here was one of my pre-draft December 2022 comments about Richardson:

Another:

Bucky Brooks highlighted Richardson’s lack of experience:

The next Geno Smith could be Bryce Young

Same here. I would’ve been supportive of the pick. I’m a sucker for traits and he’s got the tools. He’s just not very good at being a QB. The problem with guys like him who have those physical tools is that their growth is stunted as a pocket passer since they can just pull his ball down and run if their first read isn’t open.
