Diverse run scheme. A lot of wide zone but then power schemes (duo, counter, etc.) off of that. Playaction shots deep and in breakers to their Cephus types and TEs to move the chains. His screen games chops would be a boon as well.
It bends more complimentary football than massive numbers but that may have been bc they typically had awesome defenses.
The diversity of the run game was a mandate from Dan Campbell. Having spent time in the trenches in the NFL, he knows how much it can impact defenses and how much it helps everyone to block their man a little bit easier. The design of the run game would fall on Hank Fraley and others. The OC doesnât typically design the run game unless they have a special background. Every team is a little different, but the general idea is the same.
As Cal fans who followed Goff to this board pointed out, Goff became the #1 overall pick running the air raid offense. All of the under center playaction stuff was thrown at Goff and he had to adapt to it. One negative narrative about Goff coming out was that he might be âjust an air raid guy.â Its funny how things have come full circle.
I think he knew enough about Ben the person that he stuck with him and changed other coaches around him. Ben was coaching the position Dan played, so it was a safe move either way. But I certainly donât subscribe to the idea that Dan always thought Ben was a hidden gem ready to explode at any moment. If that were true, he wouldnât have had to take a low level position working for a shit organization and a losing head coach noboby wanted to coach for. He most likely ends up in New Orleans with Dan.
Thanks for finding this. Iâve honestly never seen Goff run that type of offense and itâs certainly not the offensive style that McVay or Campbell favor so Iâve always felt Goff was more of a pro a role guy more similar to Brady, Rivers, Brees, Manning than true air raid / spread QBs like Mahomes, Mayfield or Murray.
I think there were some extenuating circumstances to that as well. Zac Taylor (from that same staff) goes on and on about wanting to hire Ben but the timing was never right. (âIâve tried to hire Ben many, many, many times,â Taylor said, âand he was always promoted to where I couldnât get him"). They both wax poetic about his intelligence. I think his rep league-wide was probably pretty low, but amongst the people he had worked with it was sky high.
not to replace Ben but if Glenn goes Mike Zimmer is a short term option(he is 67) til Shep is ready Zimmer does have a small connection(spielman bros) and his defenses in Minny were mostly top 10 every season
Itâs amazing how opportunities come or donât. Stars have to align and BJ could be doing something else for a living right now. His ascension to sought after HC has been only pre-empted by his lightening quick climb to OC!
And then also that though MCDC and Holmes whiff on Lynn, the fact that they actually did their homework on Patriciaâs prior staff instead of just giving them all the boot, tells you they were trying to be fair by doing their due diligence and hire/promote based on merit, qualification and some mutual belief system vs just hiring your buddy or on title alone (think Quinitricia).
This leads me to believe theyâre going to promote from within.
I didnât see anyone mention Pete Carmichael. He was in NO with Payton and DC and AG. If Payton doesnât scoop him up for his Denver staff, would DC be interested in him as the new OC?
I think Payton kept playcalling duties all those years but Pete got those duties when Dennis Allen took over and retained him as OC.
