Are the Lions phasing out David Montgomery?

I mean, of course not.

But if it’s stupid enough for 97.1 to discuss, you better be damn sure it is for us as well.

For hyping Montgomery as the “engine” that drives the offense their usage, or lack thereof, of him is strange.

I think there are a couple factors at play.

1.) The RB coach is responsible for which RB plays. Our current RB coach is Tashard Choice who has a lengthy history with Gibbs. I’m sure he respects Montgomery but Gibbs is his guy.

2.) Apparently Ben designed specific plays for Gibbs and other plays for Montgomery. With Morton it’s the same plays for both backs.

3.) Gibbs might be used more as he’s more explosive and can make up for some OL deficiencies.

I agree that I don’t like the current committee setup. Ideally it should probably be 60/40 Gibbs / Montgomery. I think the current setup will wear out Gibbs and doesn’t use Montgomery correctly.

The truth is every offensive skill player other than ARSB and Gibbs is presently being underutilized.

I think they’re keeping him fresh. DMo is a great RB in this system, and, a great human being. He is everything a Lion player has to be.

He’s also getting a little older. I think we’re just extending his career.

I don’t think they’re phasing him out at all, but Choice needs to do a better job of rotating them. Keeping them both fresh is important for the long playoff run we’re expecting.

On a side note, I’m very happy with where we currently are overall. But for as much of a home-run hire Shep seems to be at DC, I’m still on the edge about Morton. I can’t pinpoint it, but I think we might have gotten a bit of a dud at OC.

Monty is the closer and a very capable short yardage back who is also explosive. Better between the tackles overall. Gibbs is better in space but can also run between tackles. Monty is better overall at reading blocks.

They keep each other fresh. They are each critical. I think Monty is the better pass blocking back who can catch and Gibbs is a more explosive pass catcher who can also block.

Timestamped at 9:41 - Dan would like to “balance out the carries”, snaps can get “skewed because Jah runs the 2 minute”

I think Monty has been hurt more than anyone not having Ragnow in the middle.

Monty is on pace for just under 900 yards and 10 td’s not bad for a guy being phased out

The biggest changes so far are using Gibbs as the opener, which I do like. Last year DMONT started the games to set the tone. I like Gibbs in there he’s just that explosive and can do things that very few in the nfl can do.

The other change is DMONT isn’t necessarily the short yardage back/ goal line back.

So him gobbling up first downs and touch downs isn’t a thing either like his early days here (and when Jamaal was here ).

That being said, Gibbs got that 4th down on the option play and the spin move for the 2nd touchdown .

DMONT (and Laporta) got stuffed short of the first down marker.

Can’t fault anyone for wanting to feed Gibbs, he’s the best . Best RB since Barry.

But i would like to see them keep each other fresh and healthy .

TB , Cle, KC are good run defenses … DMONT struggled those days

Could be Gibbs was the better option for a physical defense like Tampa - which was proved correct. DMo historically struggles vs Tampa.

I’m sure he’ll be back kicking ass after the break.

I mean the split of carries on the team is 50% Gibbs, 40% Dmo, and 10% other.

I am not sure I see anyone getting phased out.

3-4 games ago it was all Dmo now 2 out of last 3 it has been Gibbs crushing it.

I am just not see a big difference other than Gibbs is more explosive and Dmo has typically been better running holes.

What I did like last game was getting Gibbs the balL quick in those mini screen/flair passes. He caught them in stride and in space. It was crazy.

Was a great idea vs the Bucs style of defense. Probably should have done it a couple more times even. They had no answer for it.

Wayne didn’t exactly look like a football coach… More like your chubby drunk uncle who always wants to go to Hooters :joy:

Wrong thread… ■■■■ it I’m leaving it haha

Are the Lions phasing out David Montgomery?

I think the short answer is: no.

I just write this discussion up to over-responsive society that can take any issue, beat the horse till it is dead, tenderize said horse, and end up with hundreds of posts on any given topic.

Guilty pleasure: The bigfoot post over the summer was some of our best work.

I don’t get this line of thinking. Their split is the same as last year. They alternate drives, but jamyr gets 2 minute and Monty closes games. Actually this year seems like Monty has had more special opportunities that came on jamyr drives.. like the trick plays in the redzone

Surprised they can’t find better topics this time of year.

Since the Ravens game Dmo hasn’t been the same at breaking tackles. I wonder if he is dealing with a little bit of an injury.

DMo just had a couple of not great games. The Oline hasn’t been doing a great job of opening holes either. I think he will be fine. Just needs to find the right matchups.

He was our 4th leading receiver vs the Buc’s. OK it was 18 yards but still.
