Are the Lions phasing out David Montgomery?

Agreed…how about some play action on 1st down when Monty is in the game. Those linebackers are playing down hill trying to take on Monty. Pull the rug on them.

i think a lot of you aren’t taking into consideration that Dmo is playing on obvious running plays, and when they’re trying to milk the clock. So he’s going up against 8+ men clogging the middle. The the role that back-up RB’s get. So those carries dont really count.

Very bizarre! I wonder if the topic was for click bait

IF the staff was really thinking about doing this or trading him, there would be an official thread on it by our staff or Dan.

I didn’t want to create a new thread so I went back to this. I do think this is happening as painful as it is. I love DMo and I think he’s one of the best in the game without bias. As much as Gibbs and DMo want to be the best combo, it looks like they’re all in on Gibbs even on those short 2 yard up the middle runs. DMo looks like that typical average big back that runs out the clock or gives the lead back a break that every team has. I hate it. I’m thinking he’ll be gone, as well as Reader, Anzalone, GG, and Amik since they need to re-up Branch, Jack, Gibbs and LaPorta.

Yeah cutting or trading him in the 2026 league year would be perfect from a cap perspective

Pretty sure they started rotating DMO in on the first series against the Commanders. That’s the first time that’s happened this season. So no, I don’t think so.

That’s a no… 2027 is possible though

I think they are just ramping him up. They are going to need his grind down the stretch.

He had 15 carries for 71 yards yesterday. I’ll take that all day from Monty.

I think D-Mo will be back in 2026.

His cash due is $6M and he is worth it. There is a sizeable $4.8M dead cap hit as well. He is also a very valuable part of the culture and locker room.

Everyone knows that Gibbs is the guy but D-Mo is a very string 1B. He actually got more snaps and carries Sunday.

His role now is to give a change of pace to Gibbs without a significant drop in productivity. His contract is designed to end after the 2026 season when he will have a 2027 Base salary of $7.5M, an additional $1M Roster bonus and a cap hit of $10.25M.

I think Dan or whoever is calling the plays should “feel” each quarter and give the ball to whichever guy is hotter. Take it from there. The counts will probably work out about how they want them to be overall at the end of the year anyway.

But cookie cutting them in set numbers without taking “the hot hand” into account wastes the entire notion of momentum imho. Mathematical approaches keep you on point though.

Both guys are very effective runners. I love both of them. There is some overlap and that does keep defenses on their toes by “treating them the same” as Morton has tried to.

When the OL plays like sheet, they both don’t do much.

When things are a little congested inside, DMO still has a certain ability to time things a bit better especially if he “has the hot hand”. Exceptional with patience. It’s not about size. Gibbs is not afraid of contact and I’m fine with him running inside and out.

If the Oline is creating seams though, Gibbs has more upside and once he gets in that rhythm he’s super dynamic. The defense starts to reel a little so just ride him and forget about touches and just keep giving him the ball.

Regardless, DMO got a mean streak in him though. When he’s relegated to the sidelines, it makes him a little more dangerous when he finally gets in!

It’s a great problem having both of these guys in your RB rotation.

I think they re-do his deal to give him an effective 1 year extension so he has a palatable 2027 cap number and part ways after. He is still very effective and barring injury will stay that way a couple years, ages 29 and 30.

The 70 yards is great for someone splitting, but DMo’s total carries and some of those yards are misleading because he was used to run out the clock. The same reason Allen came in for Goff. That’s what I’m saying. Montgomery is way better than to just be used as that guy RB everyone has to give your lead back a rest or for garbage time. Montgomery was a major player in this teams success ever since he’s been here. I hope DC goes back to him more now, but it really is looking like he’s being phased out. Hope I’m wrong.

DMo is also the preferred back to run out the clock in close games as well.

Dan will spread the ball around to everyone as he did Sunday, but you also have to have a feel for the game and feed the guy that is hot.

Gibbs was on fire Sunday and deserved the ball early in the game.

Unless the player needs a rest, keep feeding him while he is hot. Dan did the same with Jamo.

If DMo is gashing the defense, I’m sure Dan will stay with him longer.

Both RBs received 15 carries yesterday. Monty turned those into 71 yards. Gibbs turned his into 142 and 2 tugs. Gibbs is the feature back and Monty is the elite back up. I don’t even think Monty would disagree at this point.

It sounds crazy to say - but I feel like Gibbs is underrated on this board. You could make the case that Gibbs is the 2nd best RB in the NFL right now (outside Taylor). The Lions are smart to use Monty to keep Gibbs from 20+ carries a game - but Gibbs is approaching all pro level.
