Backup QB Situation

I know it is going to be brought up all off season. Hell, probably most of the regular season.

But I was looking through the NFL and looking what the backups were for all the other teams in the NFL.

And very few teams have a “solid” backup. And even those backups wont be able to carry a team. For instance if Mahomes goes down for 4 games. Id expect minshew to go 1-3 or 2-2. At most.

Thats true for virtually every team.

The only teams that wouldn’t have a bad drop off, dont have a good QB1 or have a young developmental QB.

So Hooker is a fine enough Backup.
You wouldn’t get anything for a trade (MAYBE a 5th rounder if your lucky)
And theres nothing out there.

So just getting ahead of the curve here

I know this really has nothing to do with the actual point of your post…but how do you have Kyler and Brock Purdy listed a tier ahead of Jayden Daniels, Stroud, and Tua?

IMO Daniels and Stroud are at least a tier ahead of Kyler and Purdy.

TBD. Younger QBs. By the end of the year i can agree with that.

But we have seen plenty of qbs in the past that have a good first year or so then fall off hard (lawrence as a recent example)

Me personally i need to see 3 good year or 2 great years from a Rookie QB to buy in.
Stround needs to bounce back.
Daniels needs to not fall off.
Tua needs to stay healthy. Hes a top 10 qb when healthy.

Where Purdy is great. Made multiple deep playoff runs. And he never was the cause of a collapse for the most part.
And murry. Yea maybe knock him down a peg.
But theres hope i suppose

Lions think so highly of Hooker that they signed a high school coach to dress ahead of him. The Lions have one of the worst backup QB situations in the league.

Backup QB is quite the unknown for us. But we will know a lot more after camp. I think we still could bring back Bridgewater if truly needed. But that is going to be determined by what we see in the preseason games.

I really hope Hooker makes a leap this year. If we are serious SB contenders we need a backup that we can count on to get us through a stretch

I hear ha.
But again.

What other playoff team if their starter goes down for 4 games. The backup can win 1-2 games?

Like MAYBE kc with minshew
LAC with heinike
Baltimore eith rush?

What about NFC?
Probably ATL thats it.

I mean, GB with Willis no.
Phily with DTR? No. (They will just run saquan)
Dallas with Grier no.
SF with mac jones?
Rams with Jimmy G
Arizona with Brisset.

None of those NFC teams i would bet any money on to win 2 out of 4 games.

I guess QBs are a dart throw…

But I would always prefer a veteran castoff

Joe Flacco, Danny Dimes etc

Or a high draft pick reclamation project like the 9ers & Rams do with Darnold, Baker, Jimmy G etc

Never understood the Drew Stanton/H Hooker round 2/3 moves.

But Brad was swinging for the fences after that elite 2023 round 1 and 2 with his project picks

I think Hook will surprise many. I think he’ll be a good one

A big factor is the quality of the team’s offensive line. A great line can overcome some deficiencies with a backup quarterback. Philly would probably win more than they lose. Same with us. Remember, Green Bay won with Willis playing. Didn’t they win 3 of 4 last year playing a backup?

Yes to all’a it. I think Willis’z ceiling is very high though. I believe in him more than most too.

Absolutely. Philly. Great o line. Hand the ball off to Saquan.
Backup MIGHT throw 10 balls in a game.

Buy yes Willis won 2 games.
Against TEN & IND.
scoring only 23 points per game.
Lions scored nearly 40 per game on them.
Sure if you put in a backup against your two worst opponents yes.
If he was in against PHI the week before, or Minnesota and rams the weeks after? 3 losses easy out of those opponents

Philly > GB, no matter who QB is.
Vikings & Ramz (debatably)

I could see the Steve McNair evolution for Willis. Although McNair was a much more advanced passer than Willis at this point in their careers he still relied on his legs a great deal. The development for Willis will be much more difficult though. He just won’t get the practice time or reps he needs.

I’m lost ! The QB’s the staff selected and we have, they really combed over who they wanted, they watched hours of tape, they carefully studied each player, and made an intelligent and informed decision to bring them in and place them @ back-up QB. fact is, they don’t train and play long term , IF the starting QB gets injured , sick, suffers broken bones, and that, they were brought in to handle ‘maybe’ a handful of games…NOT take over games for a few months. it’s a wasteland of old , washed up, or questionable talent to nab off FA and that-there ain’t no bad ass vet QB’s out there that will be more than happy to play back up. I’d love to have the set of Goff and Rodgers, but that’s fantasy . people say “I want to see Hooker step up.” but that means Goff is injured and not playing-and how long would it take Hooker to become a really good playmaking QB-that can operate a team at a high - level?

How many teams had a 32yo backup QB… as a former 1st round pick… that had >/= 65 career starts… and a winning record in those starts???

Sounds like he may have actually been one of the best backup QBs guys in the NFL…

I mean… SERIOUSLY…… which backup QBs would anyone want over Teddy Two Gloves?

There wouldn’t be many if you ask me.

Lol we watched conference title games with Bortles, Foles and Keenum as QBs in the same season. Backup QB is incredibly important and the Lions should’ve taken it seriously and signed a quality backup like Cooper Rush who comes in and wins football games. Hooker is a wasted pick.

Anyone who has watched Bridgewater knows that he is completely washed up. After his leg injury he was cooked. He didn’t play an entire season and still dressed ahead of Hooker. I can think of several backups I would rather have over Bridgewater .

Didn’t understand the Hooker love either. You will have people on here believing that Hooker is better than Zack Wilson who is younger and clearly much better than Hooker.

Teams with a better backup QB situation:

Buffalo- Trubisky
Miami- Zach Wilson
New England- Josh Dobbs
NYJ- Tyrod Taylor
Baltimore- Cooper Rush
Cleveland- Kenny Pickett
Houston- Davis Mills
Indy- Danny Dimes
JAX- Nicky Mullens
KC- Minshew
LAC- Heineke
LV- AOC
NYG- Jameis
Washington- Mariota
Philly- Tanner McKee (yes he’s better than Hooker)
Atlanta- Cousins
Carolina- Dalton
Tampa- Kyle Trask
Arizona- Brissett
LAR- Jimmy G
Seattle- Sammy Howell
San Fran- Mac Jones

The Lions obviously have one of the worst backup situations in the leagues. The best GM dot their i’s and cross their t’s. Brad hasn’t done that with the backup QB position.
