Yeah that #1 scoring offense in the NFL thing sort of helps the resume. If AG oversaw the stingiest defense in the NFL… well… neither would have HC gigs right now. They’d be in New Orleans. But you get my drift.
The glass is half full view is that we know his tendencies and have his playbook. I’m sure he’ll change some things, but we are “more” positioned to foil him than any other team in the NFL. Also you have zero factual basis to say he could have gotten 65M “anywhere.” He also has a 1OA pick QB going into year 2 that has wheels and a cannon. With several offensive weapons in place. He also has a good defense that’s close to complete.
Where was the better situation? Patriots? With the GM that gave his last HC one season, saddled him with a rookie QB then fired him? Jax? Maybe. But I don’t think there were all these opportunities that were just like Chicago, and he did it to just somehow bone Detroit. The Bears probably went in knowing they’d have to make him an offer he couldn’t refuse, so they did and he didn’t. I can’t fault the guy. I’d bet in a similar work situation, you’d do the exact same thing. I’d don my biggest competitor’s shirt in a freaking heartbeat if they increased my salary by like 1,000%. If my second biggest competitor offered me a 200% increase… uh… yeahhhh… still going with the larger payday. Like most humans would and should.
I actively turn down work that make me a good chunk of change bc they use a previous employer of mine. I could’ve taken them when I went out on my own, I’m the reason the were using that company in the first place (they told me as much)… But I refuse bc it’s dirty business to me… I don’t screw over people I’ve worked with
You’re saying he owes them loyalty. Does Garrett owe the Browns loyalty? Do the rams owe Kupp loyalty? The NFL is a business. You stating why you feel Ben owes them loyalty doesn’t change this fact. I respect you feel loyalty is owed, but I don’t believe he owed the Lions or Dan to turn down a 65 million dollar contract. Ben has showed nothing but gratitude to Dan in all the public comments I have seen from him. From what I can see, Dan and the Lions feel the same way.
Have you turned down a 300% raise with 5 years of guaranteed pay at that level even if they fire you after year 1? Would you say never to that so cavalierly? Like no matter “how” much they threw at you, or provided you with a phenomenal situation to take over? I mean, I’ve been loyal too. 10 years at my current job, 8 in the job before that. Passed on more money. But I don’t think anyone was going to pony up THAT kind of cheddar for Ben outside of Chicago. But who knows. Honestly not you or I.
I think the Jags were a great spot until they kept Baalke, then when candidates say no Khan finally fires Baalke albeit to late for the preferred candidates.
I think Ben has seen Caleb up close and believes that is the best QB to build up from the other options. Front office aside, the lure of CW and Ben’s offensive schemes has to have him excited. It makes sense.
Ben’s first loyalty is to his family, not the Lions. He could have left last year for the Commanders and didn’t, that was loyalty to Detroit. That was also a learning experience for him in the interview process and how to prepare.
I hope he loses every game but I don’t blame him for going to Chicago. The money as others have said is significant to understate it, family is set. The QB situation had to be a big positive as he saw up close what CW could do and the room for improvement.
Hope he fails
But completely understand and don’t begrudge him at all.
It has been exceptionally unfair that the Chicago Bears’ offensive woes were largely blamed on the offensive line. Sure, a 17th-placed ranking isn’t good, but it’s not horrendous. They had some bad outings, as did most offensive lines, but that doesn’t mean they are the main reason for Caleb Williams’ struggles as a rookie.
The Bears’ OL was asked to block for the fourth-longest time of any unit this season (3.09 seconds). That contributes heavily to a 10.7% sack rate (last in the NFL) because their 35.4% pressure rate is up to 18th. We see that replicated whether it’s against the blitz or not, suggesting it might be a general problem in Williams’ game.
Chicago also ranks 15th in PBWR, which is respectable. Similarly, the run-blocking numbers are fairly solid (0.91 RBYBC/rush, 15th), so it’s ambitious to blame the offensive line for this season’s collapse.
Intriguingly, this unit posted four games with a grade of B- or above, and three of its five wins came in those games. All three came before their bye week, though, and they only posted one game above a C+ after Week 7, when their schedule got significantly harder.
I was parroting an easy narrative, but you’re right: Caleb holding the ball so long and only triggering on receivers when they are open rather than as they become open, those were problems, problems that BJ should iron out with Caleb.
Garrett gave the Browns loyalty… Did he ask to be traded to the Steelers/Ravens/Bengals?
The Rams gave Kupp loyalty… They gave him big money and he missed significant time 3 years in a row.
Johnson could’ve made tens of millions of dollars ANYWHERE he picked to be a HC… He picked Chicago… That’s a dick move. You say Campbell doesn’t think so? Then why was Ben told hands off our staff if you go to the Bears?
