The Bears front office is in yellow:
I’m not sure that Ben Johnson would want to be in the same division as Campbell.
Also, I think his offense plays much better inside a dome, rather than outside in the elements. It also helps to have a very accurate passer and I don’t think Caleb Williams is that guy. Especially not in the elements. Now can Ben develop a running game? Probably but for the offense to truly yield the most results it probably has to be played indoors on carpet. Ben probably isn’t their guy if they just want to power run the ball. Besides, it’s the Bears, whatever decision they make will blow up in their face. For selfish reasons, I’m hoping that if Ben does go anywhere, he fails and then comes back to be our OC for the next decade. New England Patriots style.
I think BJ might be hoping for a situation similar to Dan’s. You know, a functional management team with a vision and process.
That doesn’t describe daBeers.
Poles should be canned for keeping Eberflus. The whole hiring of Eberflus was weird to begin with. The guys a good DC, well except for dealing with Hail Mary passes haha.
I think keeping Eberflus another year was a mistake but I feel like drafting Caleb has bought him this year and next.
See what I’ve started @HSVLion
This is a little out of left field, and even with my criticizing him yesterday…
Eberflus has the Bears further along than Daboll. Daboll has been there long enough that the team should really have its butt in gear, with regards to execution. Eberflus has a rookie QB and was one moron away from winning against a good team. He has a deer-in-the-headlights look to him, but you have to appreciate that he’s at least better than Daboll. They may both end up fired, but Flus is closer to the mark than Daboll.
Yeah I’m gonna say I don’t think Eberflus is the problem. The Bears won’t get much further ahead with Ben Johnson. They are not a franchise who builds its identity on offense. So I don’t think Ben Johnson would work in Chicago. Green Bay? Sure….but not the Bears or the New York Giants!
I can’t see Johnson wanting to be in the division.
I don’t think he’s the main problem, but he’s definitely not the answer. You could see that really early on. He never seemed to have a plan, he’s been wishy-washy, no long-term vision. And he blames players/his OC. He’s like so many coaches who get in the building then become desperate to keep the job rather than taking the necessary risks/lumps to make the team better.
They’ve also been one of the luckiest teams re: roster building of any team this century. Falling into the #1 spot because the Colts D dropped a pick on the last play that turned into a TD for Houston and dropped them to #2. The big trade down. Carolina sucking so they got the #1 pick again. That’s unusual.
And they still suck.
Their main issue IMO is a lack of energy. Young teams thrive off of it. Campbell brought it. Quinn brought it. Honestly I don’t think that’s Ben. IMO he’d be better at getting the house in order of an established under performing team.
There’s plenty of great coaches who I wouldn’t necessarily call energetic though. Landry, Dungy, Kyle, Belichick, Shula, etc… Reid is fun but I wouldn’t say he’s bringing much energy.
And again, I think there’s more of that to Ben than he shows. You can see him getting angry when his jaw is clenching beneath his cheek on the sidelines. Like he’s just barely able to keep it together. I think there’s some fieriness to him that goes unseen outside of meetings/practice.
The defense despite the hail mary embarrassment is real good. Oline play, and bad qb play with Fields and now a rookie are the biggest issues. Hope those issues continue.
Earmuffs is gonna fail - massively
I get it. I’m primarily talking about youthful teams.
I just still have this feeling that Ben Johnson isn’t going to take just any head coaching job.
It looks to me like he wants a great situation where he has a GM who will get him the personnel he wants (like Holmes) and he’s free to do whatever he wants on offense. MCDC gives him (I’m going to assume almost) total free reign on offense, and he has been given great ingredients to cook with.
There’s no salary cap on coaches at all, so the Lions could re-set the OC/DC market by keeping Johnson in place with a fat long-term contract that pays him like a HC. Get it done, Sheila.
I could see Ben Johnson taking over in New Orleans. He’d have his way there. But places like both New York teams I doubt it. Maybe Arizona f it was open. Cleveland?? I’d say no!
I’m already surprised that Ben Johnson has passed on opportunities to be a head coach so I’m going to stop guessing because clearly I would have taken those opportunities.
I thought Ben Johnson was a shoo-in for a head coaching job until I stumbled across his YouTube channel. He recreates episodes of Small Wonder in the style of one man dinner theater. He might be too creative. Deal breaker.
