The question to me is how much more guranteed money are we talking for Trey? He’s got 1 more year on his deal coming off back to back 17.5 sack seasons. The time to hit the jackpot one last time in his career is now.
If he was good with adding only 60 more mill guaranteed over 2026 and 2027 seasons we could pull it off without killing us in the future. But his agent might just laugh at that offer.
Crosby got 91 more million guaranteed last week… So Trey is probably looking for something similar. Crosby is a bit younger but has had surgery in back to back seasons while Trey has been healthy and leading the nfl in sacks. 100 mill guaranteed is possible
Give him a 2 year extension so 3 total years here. Add a few void years(3). 2 of those to help with the signing bonus and then 1 void year in case we have to take some of his base salary and add it as a bonus
The issue with Trey is not the draft compensation but the contract he wants.
He has requested to be traded twice because Cincy’s cheap as wouldn’t give him a big contract.
As all these Edge contracts are extended this summer his price may be too rich for Holmes.
Trey has been arguably the best Edge the last 2 years.
He will want at least $35M AAV.
The question is how many years?
I don’t think Holmes will have two $35M Edges.
He could put off extending Hutch for 2 years and just pay him $42M-$45M in 2027.
But sad to say I don’t think Brad will add another expensive Edge just like he said he wouldn’t at the Combine.
There’s not enough void years available.
Hutch will have an extremely long contract and Trey will want one.
Delaying Hutch could stagger it a bit but even Hutch’s 5th year option is $20M.
Holmes could tear up Trey’s contract and give him the same 3 yrs $106M deal that Maxx got and add two void years.
Holmes could wait until 2027 to sign Hutch but that would cost a lot more and could piss off Hutch.
2027 would be the only year both Hutch & Trey would be on Mega contracts. The 1st year of the Hutch contract is the easiest to manage the cap impact by having minimum salary and big signing bonus that would be spread over 5 years.
It’s possible, but like Holmes said, “Highly Unlikely”.
Holmes also said guys like this don’t become available very often. He’s got a chance to make a significant impact to a Lions team that’s SB ready. Hoping he does.
Its why i could be way off on this but i could see a 2-3 year window with the current vets on this team
Decker(Manu in 2-3 years will have to be ready)
Ragnow (I think we develop Ekugan or get another person for Center where I could see Ragnow and Decker riding off into the sunset together)
Reader having a replacement
Davis not coming back and have Amik/Slay(for a year)/Rake/etc being paired with Arnold along with some cheap CBs in the draft/etc to keep that position relatively cheap
Anzalone for a few more years(2-3 years) but then it will be Campbell/Barnes maybe Rodrigo still in the fold as well
Goff(They did meet with Milroe so i could see a way where Hooker is gone with Milroe being the heir apparent in 2-3 years ala Rodgers/Mahommes/Love/etc if it is in 3 years he would still be only 25)
This would be a way you could pay your guys(Sewell/Hutch/ARSB/Branch/Kerb/SLP/etc) and still be good now and then keep it going in the future if you hit it right with guys like Milton/Manu/etc
Yeah, I can’t see it either. Possible, yes. Probable, I really doubt it, its just too much with Hutch, Kerby, Jamo coming up and the 2023 class on their heels.
