Bengals holding Trey hostage

We have no shot at him and im ok with that. I just hope the money bags teams in our division dont end up with him.

The long term smart thing to do would be to go get one of these guys. Mykel Williams would be a great add along with Z Smith. Williams seems to need some development but in a rotation he could contribute and be groomed to start at some point soon.

I think a first gets it done. History has shown in nfl that players needing a bump in pay in the top tier of non-qb contracts that the compensation in trade is much lower than the perceived value of the player. I will be surprised if he goes for anything more than that. But ultimately I’d guess he’s staying in cincy. A la Myles Garrett.

The problem is we’re dealing with a team here that bucks historical trends. Cincy almost always keeps their guys - in fact holding them hostage is a great way to put it - until the bitter end. Very, very few have ever been traded before their contracts ended. I think it’s happened like twice this century? And one was Dunlop who was old and had fallen out of the rotation. The other was Carson Palmer, who basically had to retire and sit out most of a year before the Bengals would move on. So some extreme circumstances.

That’s why I was so surprised to hear they’d allowed him to seek a trade. I should have known better.

They’re not going to blink. There is intent behind their supposed unrealistic trade demands. Trey holds out or plays.

This is why it’s shocking to me that upper end talent in free agency signs with Cincinnati at all, because they have a history of screwing you in the end and also not winning, so what are you really getting there that you couldn’t get for roughly the same money from your other suitors?

I suspect Burrow has a lot to do with it. You also have to give them credit, Hendrickson and Reader weren’t nearly as highly thought of when they were FAs as they are now. I remember everyone being surprised by the money they gave Hendrickson, who I believe had never been a starter in NO.

Yeah, that seems likely. They’re just going about their same old methods in a new way. The false hope version.

If Palmer had those Andy Dalton teams they probably win a SB.

Pre-injury Palmer, for sure. I never really thought he was the same afterward. Certainly he wasn’t nearly as mobile. People forget he could actually run around a bit when he first got into the league.

Yea and in fairness the bengals did use those draft picks to get better when they traded Palmer.

If I were an agent, I wouldn’t ever let my clients sign in cincy.

So I actually do think the Lions would pull the trigger for a Trey if it was reasonable and not something that would hurt their future. They had the same approach with Crosby. Garrett was just always LOL GTFOH bc of what the browns wanted. But if Trey could be had for a 2nd and 2 3rds…and then he signed a reasonable new deal that could make sense. But That isn’t gonna happen.

To be fair Trey and his representation should have known this would happen when terms on his 2020 contract offer looked like this:

Hey you seem like you’re pretty locked in to the team…did you hear what or if they offered to Sweat before he signed with Az?

The dude has 35 sacks in his last 34 games… Cinci should play hardball. Get as much as you possibly can. That’s one of the best 2 season stretches in nfl history.
