IMO, it’s because he’s replaceable and highly overrated by Lions fans. I loved the guy, but I loved Jamaal Williams too. And people like to downplay what he accomplished here to boost Monty up.
IMO, outside of maybe 10-15 guys, the difference between RB16-60 is minimal. For me you are either special or replaceable…Monty isn’t special He appeared that way here and nowhere else before coming here. As the same held true for Jamaal Williams.
I mean look Monty is basically on his own or, the lead back in Houston and he’s not projected to have some monster season. If he was the stud everyone here talks about, people should be projecting him to be such. They aren’t…because he has 7-8 seasons (dating back to college) showing exactly what he is. He couldn’t of gone to a better situation yet he’s still projected to produce at a bottom level starter.
I loved Monty but I didn’t see the same guy last year after the knee injury at the end of 2024. Plus he’s pushing 30. I wish him well but I think the Lions traded him at the right time before he falls off a cliff.
I still hate it. Gibbs is their mega star they want to give him the ball full time and DMo wants more playing time and he wants to make money so can’t blame him.
JW isn’t even close. I don’t know how good DMo will be somewhere else, but he was very good here with big time production especially the NFCCG year. IMO, the Gibbs and DMo combo was one of the best ever and it would have been better to stick with that.
We been back and forth, and I been back and forth with a lot of people on this. Its done and over with. I hope DMo does well, and I’m excited about Gibbs.
Ahh that’s right…still dont love it. Not saying he was special, but does have RB1 ability on the right team, and imagine having him still here with Gibby instead of Pacheco? Idk, just seems he left sour and in a bad way…we’ll see how it pans out, but it def hurts my butt having him gone.

Correct. The Lions did Monty right and he didn’t return the favor. The business decision would’ve been make Monty play out his 3 year contract he signed before 2023. But like the Lions do, they rewarded stellar play when they didn’t have to.
I fully expect the regret coming from Monty’s camp and not ours. He’s gonna be the leader of a disappointing running game vs one of the best 1-2 punches in the NFL.

For Monty, the lack of guaranteed money going forward was always going to be an issue as soon as they reworked his deal and the ink dried.
A highly productive vet RB is not playing without guaranteed money. Too easy to get hurt. It seems that Brad had a shelf life for him and also expected the ascendency of Gibbs. So, this was kind of a planned obsolescence type thing. Monty did say in an interview this offseason he was fine with his role, with the underlying issue of guaranteed cash for 2026 and beyond an unspoken sticking point.
And they did him another solid by moving him to a place where he could get more financial security, in addition to the RB1 role, which again is tied to money at the end of the day. If the Lions would have guaranteed most of his salary for 2026, seems clear he’d be fine with being the second banana in DET for another year.
He had just 600k guaranteed for 2026. Obviously, he’s not going to go into camp on that.
Brad didn’t see him being a big part of the plan going forward. But got to him to a place where they did. As Boyd pointed out, he wasn’t the same player in the immediate aftermath of the knee issue, and that probably sealed his fate in DET.
I’ve shared my David Montgomery opinions here a million times. I think he was amazing, and was way better than some people give him credit for. I wish it would have worked out but it didn’t.
Right now he’s betting on himself. Staying in Detroit taking a lesser role messes with your money. He’d probably get cut a year later. Texans took care of him and if he has a good year, he’ll probably get more money. And thats that.
I hope the best for the guy. I really love that Texans team. I wish the best for a lot of our former players. i even wish the best for AG and the Jets I cheer them on.
I mean, it even sucks to lose Anzalone and Decker and even to an extent Glasgow, With Monty and those guys gone you can clearly see Brad went with this youth movement.
Moving forward I am excited for Gibbs. Give that kid the ball. I hope Pacheco can be a solid back-up but i’m pretty sure he’ll get injured in pre-season and be out for the season.
