I would have liked someone more versatile. Campbell had 3 sacks during his career at Iowa so he won’t blitz; however, listening to Shepard’s interview (the position coach raved about his passion for the game). You can have passion but you need talent as well. I hope Campbell is willing to fix his flaws quickly because he has a lot imo

Absolutely love the Campbell pick. I am an Iowa homer but highly critical of all Iowa picks. Campbell is the best Iowa linebacker since Chad Greenway. He can do it all on the field. Kirk Ferentz just rants and raves about this guy and I have been told his leadership is just incredible. Him running our defense for the next 8-10 years has me sooo damn excited. Luke K. is his comp and he spent the off-season working directly with him. I know for a fact, the Buffalo Bills were planning on taking him late in the first round. My only disappointment is where we got him, just felt it was a bit early for him.
As for the Gibbs pick, I am just like everyone else, very puzzled. Essentially a 3rd down back that can help our passing game but those are a dime of dozen in the NFL. To waste our top 6 pick (with the trade down) on an undersized speed back is sooo beyond dumb. I would have been fine with Robinson at pick 12 l, as he is a bell cow type but this just blows my mind. There were plenty of RB’s we could have taken in the 2nd round that would have filled this exact same role. Lions were excited to get him so I guess we will see how we use him but it also means DeAndre Swift is gone, which kind of also disappoints me.
Coming into last night, I couldn’t think of a way the Lions could mess the draft up, they somehow figured out a way to devalue both of the picks.
Mock drafts and immediate draft grades are virtually useless. If you look over the years at “consensus” picks prior then consensus grades after the draft, you look back and laugh at most of them at how inaccurate they were.
I’ll admit that I was dismayed by the picks when they happened but the reality is that none of us know anything until we see what these guys do in the league. They will be judged on on field performance not pre and post draft grades so all I can say is…we’ll see.
Everyone has been saying, trust Holmes. Now he came out and said, after a YEAR of the entire front office preparing for this weekend, and said Gibbs and Campbell were the top players on their draft board.
What would you have them do? Seriously. Would you have them pass on them because it doesn’t match up with the top prospect list of some keyboard warriors?
We just acquired two great football players . Celebrate it. Compare Campbell and Urlacher. Whatever. These are our guys now. If people don’t like it, tell them to stuff it.
By the end of the day we will have a starting OG of the future, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see another OL picked up in round 5 (Voorhees) in a draft in stash with starter potential (ala Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith for Chiefs a few years back)…
Suddenly-
Decker/Sewell
J Jackson/S Avila
Ragnow/GG
Big V/Voorhees/GG
Sewell/Big V
If the team chooses not to extend J Jackson, and goes with guys like Torrence/Avila and then a later injury discount player… Suddenly we have Decker- 24’, Avila- 26’, Ragnow- 26’, Voorhees- 26’, Sewell- 25’… That would actually be a fairly cost effective OL the next 3 years, and we could decide to draft and replace Decker, or extend him… I could see use working out deals to keep GG as a swing C/OG (he wants to be here) and maybe even Big V at a backup swing RG/RT…
Decker- 20M
Avila- 2M
Ragnow- 14M
Voorhees- 1M
Sewell- 24M (wouldn’t be this high for at least 4 years!)
Goff (I think he gets extended)
rookie contact backup (DTR, Haener, J Hall)
Monty- 3 yrs
Gibbs- 5 yrs
ARSB- 2 years (he will get extended)
Jamo- 3-4 years
J Mingo?- 4 years
Reynolds, Raymond, Jones Jr (one will be back next year I’m certain)
Wright- 1 yr
Mitchell- 3 yrs
??
We are an OG, TE, backup QB, and WR3 away from being a LEGIT and complete offense for at least 3 years (Goff and be franchised if need be in 2025 if we don’t have another option or extension done)
I almost wonder if I would’ve strangely felt better about it?
As of now, I’m feeling like Witherspoon getting scooped forced their trade out and the Bijan getting plucked at 8 forced their hand into adding Gibbs.
I feel like if Gibbs would’ve been taken before Bijan I could at least go with “Damn, he really was their guy” as of where I now am thinking, “Did they miss out on both of their top guys? (Spoon and Bijan)”?
We will also likely add Adebawore today… I feel it!
Adebawore
Jack Campbell
Moseley
Sutton
That is quite an upgrade when you consider we didn’t lose any major contributors and guys like Hutch, Paschal, Rodrigo, Houston and Joseph will be back stronger and more mentally prepared… guys like Romeo, Walker, etc should be back healthy!
