Well don’t forget he also coached Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts, I wouldn’t call them busts (honestly I wouldn’t call Baker a bust either).
But I’ve never been a fan of scouting coaches, just like I’ve never liked to scout helmets or systems. There will always be someone who breaks the mold, whether it’s Rodgers for Tedford, Stroud for Ohio State, or Mahomes for the Air Raid. To me if it looks like anything like that produces bad pros, it’s almost always an issue of small sample size.
This is where the disconnect between you and I is. When I look at the best of his tools, I see all-time superstar stuff. No one outside of Mahomes has his combination of arm strength, accuracy, innate scrambling ability, talent for throwing off-platform, etc… It’s the ability to beat a defense no matter how well they play him. That to me is what sets the greats apart.
Caleb is the victim of a somewhat new practice of “interaction farming.” Or whatever people want to call it. For some odd reason people or “bots” are able to post quotes and then attribute them to anyone they want. One of the purposes is to get people talking and interacting online. Places like Facebook who are typically heavy handed when it comes to some things, don’t bother to address it when it falls outside of particular topics. Even those that don’t use Facebook end up with the same quotes thru other media sources who pick up on it and cover it. Some people have formed an opinion of Caleb based on a series of things he didn’t actually say. And if its pointed out that he never said it, the response is “well it must have been leaked by his PR team.”
I summarize the practice of interaction farming as trolling…but being able to attach someone with status name to it to make it an even bigger troll job and get people talking.
Yeah I don’t understand where people are getting all their misinformation. People saying he’s a diva, he doesn’t want to play in Chicago, etc. he’s a top prospect who like many other top prospects can kind of set their own schedule to prep for the draft. They can sit out drills, only do the pro days, etc. This stuff is nothing knew.
And if you watch Caleb Williams play and don’t realize he’s a special talent… then you probably don’t know what your watching. He has incredibly elite arm talent and escape ability. These are playmaking skills at a level that only a few have. He has a natural throwing ability that compares to the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Patrick mahomes, Mathew Stafford, etc. These guys are artists with the football. (I’ve always liked the analogy of Artists vs surgeons like tom Brady, peyton manning) now, that doesn’t mean he’s going to make it…he has to improve at staying on schedule, making reads and getting the ball out. But there is an obvious reason he is a true consensus #1 like burrow or Lawrence.
So he cried after a loss. So do lots of guys. Burrow cried when they lost… deebo Samuel is a crier. It means the freaking care. It’s just stupid to think that means anything bad. Or that he paints his nails… really? Who in the hell cares?
I think he’s absolutely worth the #2 pick, and that’s because he isn’t Drake Maye. That being said what you are talking about will absolutely be looked into. Something about it screams insecurities
People are acting like the kid is going full Rodman or something. He paints his nails. Plenty of guys do it. I will never understand the obsession some guys have with other men’s fashion choices. Seems a bit hypocritical even, given that most everyone loved when Amon Ra dyed his hair…
My hope is that he in fact is not a leader and the reasons to downgrade him remain nebulous thus causing the bears to draft him only for fields to somehow beat him out in camp and cause a cascade of issues for the bears.
Not everyone will be sad if the Bears draft Caleb Williams. Among them is the sometimes reviled Ash Thompson, who thinks the Bears dysfunction is largely caused by staff and management. Caleb vibes like KAaron. I just hope he’s not as good:
