Calijah Kancey - Thoughts and Where Would You Take Him?

He blew up the Senior Bowl, which is a big difference. It’s proof of concept. You know who else raised his stock blowing up at the Senior Bowl? Aaron Donald. Before that he was a late 1st, early round pick. Fred Warner switched positions at the Senior Bowl from safety to LB.

If you show out at the Senior Bowl against other elite talents from the class, the projection becomes much less risky.

Then how did AA end up with more tackles than Kancey?

Guys who had 30 more tackles than Bobby Wagner.

Some dude named Foyesade Olukon had 50 more tackels than Wagner.

You can have them. I’ll take Bobby Wagner

The Jags signed him to a 3 year $45M deal last offseason.

Yeah remember seeing that and Christian Kirk.

I still don’t know who he is or where he came from.

Just saw a mock on NFL , passing on Carter and taking him at 6.

I can see Kancey or Smith at 6 for sure

This is a little hyperbole, just what did he do that he blew up the Senior Bow? He had a good week from what I read , but didn’t here anyone refer to him as blowing it up.

Hell Donte Stills must of blew up the shrine bowl then.

I just went back and looked at the senior blow results, and really no talk of him they talk about spears alot. But AA not much, he didn’t even make the top 10 risers list. I remember a video were he destroyed and Oline driving him back 15 yrds , but that was about all I seen. And I think you put that up. But he sure didn’t blow up the Senior blow.

Well I was just repeating jman’s phrasing but finding people at the senior bowl talking about how dominant he was isn’t hard.

And that’s just from a cursory search of Adebawore senior bowl. Virtually every mention is of how great he was.

I would take aa over kancey all day. Kancey will STRUGGLE in the league and will end up a gadget 3rd down pass rush specialist. You guys who want him in the first just think he is Donald. He isnt even a poor mans Donald. His arm lengh will be his doom. You know when a little kid is trying to punch a bully… but he just stands there with a straight arm on the kids head and he cant reach. That is kancey in the pros. Cant reach the guard or centers pads.

Not sure we’re you got all that, but definitely so good stuff there , funny how different writers right totally different takes. But I just read like five right ups with no mention of him., And the looked at that 10 biggest risers and he wasn’t even on the list. But give you credit you find quit a bit.

AA and Kancey: between them I would hope one would fall to us at #18 if either Carter is gone or we pass on him at #6.

Lol well this isn’t correct I seen a guy do that to this short guy at Goodtimes and the short guy club his Hand away with his left arm , then step in and swung with his right and left that big long arm dude laying in the parking lot. The bully got bullied.

I like Kancey, I have him as my 33rd overall player (AA is 16th), but you have to realize what you’re getting and plan accordingly. He’s essentially a DPR from the inside. And he’ll wreak havoc in that role and that will affect the game, which is why I can still rank him so high despite him being a bit of a specialist. And on the off chance he proves the doubters wrong and is somehow able to thrive with tiny arms like Micah Parsons (31.5 is very short on the edge), then maybe you’ve struck gold. But you must plan as if that’s not gonna happen.

Lol come on. That’s absurd.

On the edge you can get away with some no arm dip moves (see James Houston) but that wont fly on the iDL

@Thats2 did Kancey ever face any of the highly rated guards in this draft!? If so, how’d those matchups go?

No, but to counter that on the linemen on the inside are more lumbering (and shorter-armed) so it’s easier out-athlete the guy in front of you, which I expect Kancey to do plenty.

Not really. Two ACC linemen I really like in this class are Jordan McFadden and Chandler Zavala, but McFadden was a tackle in college and never faced Kancey head-up, while somehow Pitt and NC State haven’t played since 2020, and Zavala wasn’t even on the roster then (he was a transfer from Fairmont State). They also haven’t played Boston College since 2020 so he managed to avoid Zion Johnson as well. He went up against Jackson Carman for a few plays in 2021 but had a mediocre game.

Kancey did beat Asim Richards of North Carolina for a sack and he’s probably draftable (and he played well against the two guys they had drafted late last year too), plus he had a few sacks against Tennessee and generally doing it against SEC linemen is more difficult, but so far at least none are really draft prospects.
