There’s always room for growth, but I think he came in with a very advanced understanding of clock management. Night and day versus someone like Caldwell, but admittedly, that’s a low hurdle.
I do agree that his two minute warning ballsiness was next level.
But it did. And that’s the point. And his “ballsy choices” are so much more then ballsy choices. His high football IQ and his feel for the game were also influencing his “ballsy choices”.
One of the more interesting decisions is when the game is getting towards the end and rather than call timeouts to preserve as much time as possible, some coaches are now letting the clock run. It goes against traditional thinking and drives the announcers nuts when they see it. But when the coach explains after the game what they were thinking in that moment, its rarely a brain freeze. There is a logic to it and its like getting setup for the game winning shot without calling a timeout and giving the defense a chance to get setup.
There is no L to take, because my point is completely valid. Dan Campbell has improved as a head coach. I am sorry that this super hot take is bothering you so much.
Of course you do not see an L, why would a person not be confident in their opinion?
Some of your point is valid. Dan has been making high IQ coaching decisions in game with the little things from the beginning, something you incorrectly said werent showing up in years prior. The part about him evolving and growing as a coach, ya he has been. But he didn’t grow a brain. He has always been super high Q and forward thinking.
I read the entire piece. Tongue in cheek and all. This is the part i have said is the issue from the beginning…im stating the obvious that you are w
aware of, he didnt grow a brain. The little things were always present in years past. It was not simple ballsy choices.
We are soooo close, man. When I said they didn’t always show up in previous years, that was meant to imply that they are always showing up this year. Improvement. This was always a Dan Campbell appreciation thread.
What you wrote is exactly right. Mostly it’s win probability added and the difference between a choice is miniscule. There is a mathematically “correct” answer which does not take into account game flow or disparities between the two teams.
Here we argue more and more about less and less (which is entirely okay!). Going back to my OP, I prefer kicking there even though the alternative proved to be better. But it’s putting a bunch of variables into a magic eight ball and shaking it up. There is more than once correct answer.
