Can You Imagine? Dude Quit Mid Game

The 49ers are one screwed up organization. A dead star collapsing on itself.

I remember when the 49’ers used to be a classy organization. A player, obviously going through something major in his life and the coach puts it out there for everyone to see.

Shameful.

3 seasons. Mark me down for 2028. That’s all it’ll take before they’re back in the SB.
Purdy’s a solid QB. They always turn around quick over in the right side of the bay.

It’s reminiscent of the Vontae Davis story. Davis was a veteran Buffalo Bills cornerback, and at halftime of a 2018 game he said he had decided to retire and left. It also brings back memories of Antonio Brown running to the locker room shirtless during a game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brown never played again in the NFL.

This is the kind of thing that happens when coaches are not clear with players and expectations are not defined.

If Campbell was playing well and they benched him for a now healthy Greenlaw I can see that pissing off a veteran.

This was handled wrong by the player BUT…I can understand Campbell being pissed off at not playing.

Maybe, but Purdy looks awfully pedestrian without CMC taking the pressure off him. It’s still a talented offense surrounding Purdy but it’s just not clicking. I’m wondering if Shanahan is wearing out his welcome? A lot of coaches have a shelf life where players start tuning them out. There seems to be a lot of disgruntled behavior over there. It looks like their window of opportunity is closing with this group and they know it.

Purdy is going to be one of the fascinating storylines of the off-season. The 49ers were able to keep this together because of his salary, and now it’s time to pay the piper.

Also, I think pissing all those high draft picks away has finally caught up with them. It definitely hurt them from a depth standpoint, at least.

From what I’ve read it seems he was just pissed off that he lost his starting spot to the returning Dre Greenlaw, so he threw his toys out the pram because he started every game up until now.

That could be wrong though.

We have no turds here………

He’s also a former pro bowler.

It’s odd to just bench him and give him zero playing time. Clearly he stood there on the sidelines stewing about it until he hit his breaking point. I’m sure he felt like the team quit on him.

A smart coach would value that player. Give him some snaps. Sit him down and talk to him pregame what the plan was. It doesn’t feel like any of that happened here.

He will likely be cut…. Good news is that it puts an experienced LBer on the market incase we need another one.

Dude’s been playing great and got benched.
I have a feeling- as another poster stated that the coaches weren’t clear with him.
He has a right to be pissed but there are probably better ways to go about it.

I seriously doubt that The Lions would bring in a guy who just quit on his team in the middle of a game.

Does this guy have any history of head case behavior? The other players who have pulled this were kind of wacky guys anyway. I would love to hear Campbell’s side of it.

I talk to two 49ers fans more then I’d like. And it’s baffling to me, they love Purdy, hate Shanahan. And all I can think is, 4 championship games, 2 SB’s, and you Hate your coach?
Great organization that’ll figure it out. They always do.

His oline without Trent Williams is horrid.

If he retires this offseason, 49ers are in some big big trouble, cause Deebo Looks Anemic, CMC likely will be playing his last year as a player, Kittle is in his 30’s, Aiyuk is gone for half the year atleast, and the Dline has looked iffy, even with Bosa.

I think they will be back in contention if they hit it right, but that Trey Lance trade is haunting them, trading 3 first round picks (and using a 3rd round pick on a kicker) is starting to really haunt them.

Doesnt even mention that Dre Greenlaw is an FA, and he looked solid lastnight, but it seems he still aint 100 percent if he can only play 1 half atm.

its cause Shanny is, how should I say it… Behind the times a little bit

he really hasnt changed his scheme much at all, and with Deebo in his broken state, its putting the offense in a hole at times.

I do think hes a great OC mind overall, but his schtick (similar to Andy Reid with the Eagles) can only last so long. Sometimes, the relationship runs its course.

If the 49ers fall below expecations again next season, and hes part of the reason why, i expect him to be on the hot seat. I think hes fine this offseason for sure, but next year is a big one for him, could be his most defining season as the HC for the 49ers in his tenure.

The 49ers look to me like a team that is going to have to retool some

And if that is the plan the question is do they pay Purdy or let him walk?

Most of their skill players are on the fritz. They need some Oline help.

The Defense is in good shape but the offense is broken obviously at the moment.

Staying really good in the NFL is incredibly difficult. Which is why I try not to react to Holmes in season moves. He seems to know that you gotta always been planning long term while pushing short term. Insanely difficult balance he has to walk with the roster. And it goes without saying, much easier to screw it up than get it right

I just think of the last 50 years of Lions, and having a coach that consistently makes the championship game, and then goes to a Super Bowl, even takes one of those games to OT… man how could I hate that guy?

Really curious what SF does with Purdy.

I’ve said it from the start. He is a better version of Jimmy G. Don’t get me wrong, a much better version. In the right system Purdy can play point guard and run a system effectively. His mobility and improvisation make him a very good starter in these circumstances.

However, if you’re asking Purdy to play real QB. Dropping back and carrying the load. QBs like Stafford, Goff, Burrow, ect. I’m not sure he’s fully capable of being that guy. At the end if the day Purdy is closer to being Gardner Minshew than a bonafide pocket passing QB. Purdy can still develop and improve, but there are some limitations in his game

I dont know - I doubt it too but I wouldn’t complete dismiss it.

You’re talking about a guy who wants to play. Who plays at a high level. A guy who deserved more respect than he was given. Sure he melted down and there’s no way Dan would want that guy on his team all season. But if we were thin at LBer and needed a body for the playoffs. I could see us renting him for a few weeks.

The Lions have had guys on the roster that are me first or have been problem child’s elsewhere. They just don’t stick around long term.

Dan believes a quality roster can carry a player or two like that.
