I don’t know, bro. Seems like this one might have fallen in their laps. This guy comes in as day 1 Nickel, where they probably were OK with playing Jacobs or one of the other new-hires.
We talked (@Air2theThrown and others) about this defense being a bit in transition and not being able to judge AG fairly. What has happened on the back end and maybe especially with this hire is there should be no issues for AG except at DT in executing his defense. CGJ is major get for him because it keeps him in nickel like he wants to be.
this is a good post for those that say the salary cap doesn’t matter- you can always work around it. Ya, but eventually it comes back and bites you hard.
Yes for sure, but why us and not the other 30 teams? We were on it and the AG/DC familiarity prolly played a role.
I think we are set at nickel for sure, Love his versatility for SS too. its an unbelievably good fit for us.
Except for DT (and if we’re objective, Mike too) any defensive rookie will be a long shot to start. I still think Forbes or Banks (and Jack Campbell) would fit nicely.
Yes, AG — lets see what you can do now.
The decision was probably pretty easy for Johnson. He knows Glenn extremely well and won’t have an issue picking up this defense quickly. We have a clear role for him to play a lot of snaps at probably what he views his best position (playmaking nickel). He sees the talent around him in the secondary that will allow him to free lance a little more and knows we have a talented pass rushing group on the edge.
I would love Chark back, but he clearly can find better opportunity elsewhere if he is looking to sign a 1 year prove it type deal.
This is an instance where it does make a lot of sense for CGJ to rehab his value here.
Although we could still find a way to sign Chark, I’m alot more lukewarm on it now that we signed CGJ. You can kick the can down the road only so much.
Could be that Brad likes his options for WR better than DB/CB in round 1. With such a deep class at corner, I would not be surprised if he comes up with a round 3 gem that no one ever thought of. And WRs can acclimate to the NFL faster. It kind of all makes sense.
I wanted to add on top of this. Bijan is a possibility (I wouldn’t take him at 6, but I get it and helping Goff) knowing Brad Holmes BPA mindset… I also think even WR is a possibility… If I was a betting man I’ll bet we will be moving up in this draft and it won’t be just once. I think the way we have been active in this free agency, makes me believe Holmes will move up and get one of the blue chip players, Will Anderson, (stay at @6) for Jalen Carter. I know that Anderson won’t go past Cardinals, Texans at 2 for Anderson isn’t out of the realm either. I know that Seahawks will take Anthony Richardson if he falls to them that’s why BH may move up to 3 because he fears Seahawks may get his guy.
I still feel a CB in the first, possibly 2nd if talent is still there, is a high probability. We need to plan long term for the position. With so many not signed past the next 2 years it’s a big question mark. It takes most CBs a year or two to adjust to NFL play. Draft a top guy now, let him learn behind the veterans, and he’ll be hopefully ready to start than.
I also hear a lot of comments regarding trading up for Anderson and this defense will be incredible. I love the move, just we need to remember how many here were calling Hutch a bust, no good, over rated, as he took time to learn the NFL game last year. Anderson will need the same patience if you look at the history of first round DE picks.
Is Addison or JSN worthy of #6? How is the pay scale for a guy slotted at 6 compared to what Chark may be asking for?
For me Carter is not worth the risk—too many red flags. If Tyree is there, I may pull the trigger. Yes, the D-Line is a bigger need but I just don’t see anyone worth the pick at 6 once you get past Anderson and Wilson.
GM’s do not tell the truth during silly season. Don’t know how many FA threads people were going “Holmes said…” like oh… ok well if he said no big splashes there won’t be any… I don’t like that we couldn’t sign Mosely and CGJ to longer deals, but it gives us flexibility and hopefully we continue the trend of guys wanting to stay here once they start tipping the MCDC Kool Aide. Only problem is if it steers us away from grabbing a CB out of a great class, then a year from now we have two starting holes. But we’ll save that for another day. Today…
