I know we trash the Bears and it’s fun, but we used to be them really, not winning, looking weak as a NFL team, being laughed at, grasping at straws to make it better-that was us, this is why I brought this up. please respond in a serious manner and save the jokes and crazy GIF’s and that. I am really interested in your thoughts on a serious note.
On a serious note, FTB.
As far as their draft goes, I love (for us Lions) that they invested in TE high and in a WR in the first. If you’re trying to establish your version of “Grit”, then grabbing skill position players probably isn’t the best way of accomplishing it. They added 1st round WR to one of the better WR corps in the league.
I just feel like this is not the way to impose your will on division foes like Detroit and Minny, both of whom invested significantly in trenches this weekend.
32 fan bases are thinking their team got better in free agency and the draft. The reality is a 1/3 are good, 1/3 are mediocre and 1/3 suck.
Clay Matthews said it best. The Bears Still Suck.
I also loved their draft for us, I don’t think they did much of anything. I think they took the 2nd best TE, I really like Loveland but that is not what Chicago needed. I liked the Burden pick, but there has been some talk that the reason he fell to Rd 2 is because he is a diva. If so, he will fit right in with Caleb.
The rest of their picks I felt were pretty unimpressive. Despite giving up 60 plus sacks, they picked 2 players for the offensive line. The OT they took even Bears fans are questioning because he had a rep for giving up sacks.
I like to check on other team boards, and there’s a number of Bears fans that are uneasy about this draft. They think it smells a bit of smartest guys in the room. Knowing Ben, that’s exactly what it was. I don’t think Chicago improved much. I think Detroit, Green Bay and Minnesota did solid jobs, but Chicago’s was pretty suspect in my mind.
All of them calling this a Ben Johnson draft, and trust Ben Johnson. Half way through the year they will be throwing Poles under the bus. Guaranteed.
MC/DC only won 3 games in their 1st year. The owner still believed and told the fan base to be patient and we listened.
We have been rewarded with 9 wins, 12 wins and 15 wins since.
If this Bears team starts struggling early, the wheels could come off real fast.
Agree completely. First comes Poles as the sacrificial lamb. Next comes Ben. They will spend 3 years minimum trying to prop up and make excuses for Caleb, when the truth is they picked the wrong QB. Again.
Agree about the OT they took from B.C.
The comp on him is that he could be another Rob Havenstein….
a slow footed ORT that you hope doesn’t whiff against speed rushers.
He certainly has a very limited ceiling for a 2nd round pick.
We weren’t that patient. It was Sheila
First draft, Lions went OT - DT - DT despite already having a credible offensive line
Second draft DE - WR - DT
Lions tore everything down the first year. Ben Johnson was there for all of it and before. It seems like he wasn’t paying attention
Everything and I mean everything will depend on how Caleb Williams plays. If he’s a franchise QB then they will be better. Taking a TE in the top 10 was a gamble but with this draft it’s probably ok. I’m sure Ben has a plan. I’m just glad they didn’t get Jeanty and it sounds like they tried to trade up for him.
The problem with feeding the guy more weapons in the passing game is you’re also tasking the QB more.
You want to improve your offense and give confidence to your QB? Take the game out of his hands and tell him “we got this”.
100% agree here. I like our run defense, but dealing with Jeanty 2x a year was not something I was looking forward to. I am glad the Raiders took him and the AFC West can deal with him. I think he is going to be very good.
The more Chicago relies on their QB, the worse it will be. Caleb is not that good. A running game with a high end offensive line is what would help Chicago the most.
They did do quite a bit from an OL standpoint in the FA period. The problem is that I don’t know if keeping Caleb upright is the problem with Caleb. It might just be Caleb. I guess we will see.
Especially in the elements. A California kid playing in Chicago in December? I don’t know.
They did some. Joe Thuney is a stud, he will absolutely help. Hate that he went to Chicago. However, he is also very expensive, and old. That’s why the Chiefs had to deal him, even though he basically saved their regular season when they had to kick him out to OT because their tackles were ASS.
Getting Jonah Jackson though? That doesn’t scare me in the slightest. We already know, Jonah Jackson is going to spend most of the year on the injured list. It’s his jam. We also know, even when he does play, he isn’t that good. Remember, in game 1 against us last year after he just signed his big money deal with the Rams, he got moved off of Center quickly to guard, and he was getting exposed as a guard. He was so bad at guard last year, the Rams benched him and then got him on the first boat out of town. They were ecstatic Chicago was going to give them anything and they got to offload a dead weight contract.
Drew Dalman was an ok get, he is a good center but not that powerful. He is not even close to what Ragnow was, considering Ben is trying to replicate our offense there. Chicago forked over a pretty penny for a guy who is a decent but not great fit.
Chicago fans and news has echoed this sentiment. Yes, the Bears went on a spending spree to patch holes, but they spent a LOT of money to do it, and the returns aren’t that solid. The best player they got is aging, meaning the Bears at least need to draft replacements to eventually backfill those positions. They did not do that this draft, even though they had 4 picks between the first and second round.
We will ultimately see what happens of course, but I am sticking to my original story with Chicago. I think next season they will be below .500 again, and Poles will be fired. I think in 2027, the offense will still continue to be poor, and Ben is going to get tossed out next, because there is NO WAY it could possibly be the golden child’s fault.
They did f ucking good. We us lions fans better hope Williams doesn’t become great
I think they have a good team.
I’m not sold that they have a good QB. Ben can’t give him the same freedom he gave Goff.
Not this season, anyway.
And then ben comes back to be OC for dan…
But yeah, bears draft was okaaaaaaaaay, if are the vikings and lions.
Yes, if Caleb becomes great, that will be a problem. But most great teams build from the inside out, not the outside in. Nobody disputes they have a cadre of weapons on offense, but will they be able to run the ball? Will their O-line stay healthy? What about their LT situation that was a sieve last year and nothing done to address for upcoming year? Nobody in the pipeline if Thuney/others go down. If they can’t run the ball effectively, Williams won’t develop like Ben envisions. Very few QBs in the NFL can function at a high level without a supportive run game. I don’t think the Bears hit a home run by any means.
The teams that get my attention are the ones that prioritize the trenches, with the Eagles being a perfect example of exemplary line play. They have a receiver reading self-help books on the sideline, a QB who is up and down in the passing game, but a golden standard o-line and running back. Things worked out well for them. Yes, having a great D was key to them winning the SB, but their D line was pretty dominant as well.
