Sign Taylor Heinicke.
Who says Taylor is going to be available? Ron Rivera loves the kid.
I fully support cutting a below average backup making 5 mill per season.
Heinicke is an UFA and made like a million last year.
Eh, site I went to said UFA. Que sara sara…
The reason I would dismiss bevell from coaching consideration is because of chase. Chase is a terrible qb and bevell signed off on him
I don’t think it really matters though. Ron Rivera loves the kid. He isn’t going anywhere.
So you are saying you wouldn’t consider Matt Nagy, Andy Reid or Sean Payton?
Because chase daniels? Those are great coaches but daniels stink
They signed off on Chase Daniels.
We would save 2.3 MIL by cutting Daniels
Question is what you think it will cost to get a viable backup.
The only way I see it happening is if the Lions go super cheap at back up QB.
Also there is zero evidence that bevell wanted daniel. He was an oc. He wasn’t the coach, gm, or head of pro personel.
If Daniel is terrible, then is there really a drop-off in keeping David Blough and getting rid of Daniel’s salary? I’m sure Blough can hold a tablet with the best of them.
Seriously, this is such a Lions problem. We bring in these young guys, and then when it comes to handing them a bit more responsibility, it’s like, “we can’t do that! They’re there to hold down the bench and collect dust!”.
That’s why we go out and sign a guy like Vaitai only to watch Crosby outplay him on a 5th round contract, and Matt Nelson do about as good as Vaitai.
Cut Daniel, move Blough up the depth chart, and bring in some competition. Let the cream rise.
I usually agree with you, but this is plain wrong.
We have no idea if Bevell signed off on Daniel.
Even if he did, so have 3 of the best coaches in the NFL. But most likely, he didn’t.
Gonna bump this topic up… because it is very relevant again.
Chase Daniel needs to be cut.
The Lions save over $7 million in the next 2 years without him on the books.
Regardless of the long-term plan with Goff… and even if they don’t draft a QB, it would be better to roll with cheap backups while the remainder of the roster is rebuilt. Chase Daniel has never been a guy that could keep a team in the playoff chase anyway, so it was a waste of money from day #1 thanks to BQ.
We need to cut right to the chase and cut Chase. Bring in a younger, cheaper, QB to fill that back-up spot on the roster.
So, you are asking us to cut to the Chase…
(Kiddo went back to U of M, going through Dad joke withdrawls, sorry…not sorry.)
It’s only a 2.3 mil savings on this years cap.
By the time you pay a decent back up there isn’t much savings in cutting him this year.
The only way it makes any sense is if they designate him a post June cut and then spread the cap hit over two seasons.
Personally I think it make more sense to keep him this year and cut him next and have the full saving for next year.
BQ should have never given him that contract. It was a bad contract but I think we have to live with it one more year.
maybe we pick up a better option in free agency.
