To an extent, every QB that plays on a juggernaut team is a very hard evaluation. Was it their talent, or the talent around them? Ohio State just happens to be one of those programs. Alabama too.
That said, always scout the player over the helmet. If we do and believe in his traits and leadership and believe he could be our future QB, playing for Ohio State shouldn’t factor into it.
True but I could turn it around also, same school, same system, almost same stats (avg’s). Fields had better rushing stats but passing stats, Haskins 70% completion, Fields 68.4%, both around 9 yds/attempt. Haskins had 590 attempts in one year compared to Fields 579 attempts over 2 years. Haskins actually had the better numbers per game. My opinion, and just my opinion, OSU’s system (good O-line every year and good coaches) make the QB’s look better than they are.
This was the OSU true junior class, not including Fields because he committed to Georgia. Go look at how many of them are 1st rounders, let alone entering the draft.
I don’t know about you, but this makes it look like Fields took that roster further than it should have gone. I’d agree with that.
You could, but I have given my reasons why I don’t like Fields. No one seems to give a reason why they like him at #7, they just say “Man I would be totally happy with Fields at 7!!”. Fields and Haskins are very very close to the same QB, size, stats, all of it. What makes Fields that much better of a pick? I think he excels in the strong system OSU has, but put him in the NFL and on a team that is lacking depth and strength across the board and I think he fails. I just don’t see why all the excitement around him, I have watched him a lot. He looked bad in the NW game and in several games. He made some good throws in the Clemson game. I say the accuracy does not translate to the NFL speed, a lot of his throws were to wide open receivers, I didn’t see alot of tight spots he had to throw into. His receivers got a lot of separation. Well that will be different at this level.
So what about his dual threat ability and what it does to the run game? Or the players on that roster? There is 1 other OSU true junior that even declared for the draft if that says anything about the talent he played with. Sure there will eventually be 4 1st rounders in that reciever room, but he didn’t play with 4 1st round recievers last year. Also, he might have 2 of his O lineman get drafted, all 5 will end up drafted from Alabama.
That is funny, I’m not, in fact I am saying the stats from college don’t mean crap, that is why I say the accuracy numbers won’t translate. Now everyone says he is athletic, wow, so are about 100 other players in the draft. Dual threat? Yea, if that is the direction they want to take the team then great, but I don’t see Campbell or Holmes (from where they came from) going this direction. Also Fields isn’t really a true dual threat QB, yes he is mobile but he is no Lamar Jackson. So, I ask again what makes him worth a #7 pick. I’ll listen and maybe someone can convince me
Fields is NOT NFL material, slow reads while only focusing on one side of the field. His pocket awareness is slow. Yes he has athleticism to escape at times, but the next level is better than Bama. OSU has the QB focus to one side of the field and 2 reads. If the play was not there Fields was lost or found an opening to run through. The NFL is not suited for his college game.
It is rare for me to comment on the draft, I am no wanna be scout, but I do know a bust when I see one.
If the Lions feel forced to grab a QB at 7, I’d do all I could to trade back and take Mac Jones much later.
Ok, so if you don’t think the numbers will translate, I can’t help you there, that’s just your opinion which you’re entitled to.
There’s a difference in a dual threat QB and a run first QB too. Lamar and I’d argue Cam Newton are examples of run first QBs. Watson, Prescott, Allen, Mahomes, Wilson, Burrow to some extent, are what I’d call dual threat QBs. Fields is just a better runner than all of them IMO.
And I’m very interested in what his pro day numbers are. While unlikely, the rumor is he ran a 4.30 before the season.
It’s not about running for 1000 yards… Being a duel threat means he’s a THREAT, like Mahomes, Allen, Wilson… Fields has the ability to extend a play and let receivers get open, or run. He’s going to time faster than any of those 3 as well. He’s an interesting prospect, I don’t like his ability to read the whole field though… That’s where most of my concerns lie, his field vision and decision making.
I think most people don’t like Fields cause they hate osu, just like most people on here get hard on for Brady. With Stafford most likely being gone, it’s time for a QB. Stop playing the card osu has never had a good QB, so stay away from Fields.
