David Montgomery Gone?

He doesn’t have the talent/upside as Breece Hall either…hype has nothing to do with their value among those who make these decisions.

I don’t get it, if Breece Hall is only worth a 4th round pick, what makes you or anyone else think this is some major team altering thing?

.

.

I don’t think that would be a wise decision…..

Gibbs chose Georgia Tech out of high school….

and Choice was the main reason for his…. choice.

Just reading some of the comments. Obviously no one knows, but to me its very clear it’s what we all seen all season long. It’s the Gibbs show. DMo isn’t the getting touches like he used to. They killed Sonic and Knuckles. Dan and Brad said this. They both implicitly said he’s not happy, and he’s not getting the touches and called him a pro for dealing with it. They basically snubbed him. And they both feel bad. DMo was treated as your typical 2nd stringer. A lot of touches came at garbage time. He lost nothing because he was very good anytime they gave him the ball. And at time he outperformed Gibbs, but they still His average was 4.5 YPC and he still got 700 yards.

Gibbs is the generational talent. There’s no doubt. He was called the best offensive player in the league not just RB. Although CMAC said hold my bear to that one. I mean get ready for some excitment. He’ll be the next 2,000 yard rusher. Or 1,000 + 1,000. He’s already the next greatest Lion.

But I don’t agree. They messed up something thats better and would have gone into the record books.

Oh well, I’m going to be cheering Monty on wherever he goes as long as it’s not the Bears or Packers but it will be the Bears. AG get Montgomery so I can cheer him on!

This is from an article that was posted here in Nov 2024. Comments that I think are what is causing some to believe the RB Coach is the one making the call on which RB is on the field…

Interchangeable parts

The Lions have a true time share at running back with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs splitting the role almost equally. Montgomery has 127 offensive touches this season, Gibbs 123, and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said Thursday he doesn’t change his play calling based on which running back is in the game.

“We certainly have certain plays that go to each guy, but for the most part, they just have their series,” Johnson said. "(Running backs coach) Scottie Montgomery will tell me. ‘I’m going to start with Gibby this series,’ or, ‘I’m going to start with D-Mo this series.’ And truth be told, I don’t know what the numbers say if you look at our self scout entirely, but I don’t call the game that much different for either guy.

“I feel just as good about D-Mo perimeter-wise or splitting him out on routes as I do Gibby running inside the tackles. It’s really, that doesn’t influence me very much, it’s just the flow of the game and what we’re doing, and that’s because both those guys I view, we view, as complete backs. They really, they can do anything.”

Gibbs leads the Lions with 656 yards rushing and is averaging a league-best 6.4 yards per carry, while Montgomery has 488 yards. Both players are on pace for 1,000-yard rushing seasons, and both have seven rushing touchdowns this year.

“I think teams will do the running back-by-committee approach, but it’s certainly not a 1A, 1B like we have here where they’re both, if they went to, call it 28 other teams, they’d both be the No. 1 back on all those teams,” Johnson said. “So huge luxury for us. It makes my life easier as a play caller, it makes our O-line’s life easier as they’re blocking for them up front and as we like to say, they just elevate their teammates, elevate the people around them.”

Hype matters. I don’t think Montgomery has the same hype as Breece Hall especially what the stats show this season. I could be wrong. I think Montgomery is better than Breece Hall who has dealt with a lot of injuries. He’s younger thats for sue. I agree with Jared Goff when he said they have the two best RB’s in the league. I gave Ja and DMo top 5 easy.

I dont understand what you’re asking. I will just say that a big part of the Lions success has been that running game with both Montgomery and Gibbs splitting carries. I believe in Sonic & Knuckles. And I don’t think Gibbs can handle that load especially power running.

I think this is a mistake, and I hate it, but its just my opinion obviously.

Who cares? DMo will be 29 years old next season. The success rate of RBs after age 28 is garbage. Get cheaper, get younger, and move along. We don’t need a pouty boy on the sidelines because he only got 38% of the touches while banking $8m dollars.

Where? David Montgomery is a really great RB. Is it that easy to find his replacmernt?

Yeah, backup RBs are a dime a dozen. One of these guys is DMo and another one of these is a guy taken in the 7th round last year for a team that finished in last place in their division last year, but won their division and is heading to the playoffs this year:

It’s hard to find a Gibbs, Bijon, Achane. It’s not hard to find a David Montgomery.

As an addendum, here is ANOTHER 7th round pick from last year:

Damien Martinez doesn’t catch it like Monty but otherwise is the same style of player. He spent the whole year on the Seahawks practice squad before the Packers poached him. I believe GB will sign him to a futures contract. Just wanted to give a recent example to back up your point. While I think getting Monty is a bit harder then you are implying, getting .9x Monty is pretty easy.

I just personally feel that finding an above average back, not a generational guy, even late in drafts is not the hardest thing to do. I like DMo, but father time always wins, 95% of backs are pretty much toast after 28 or have entered their steep decline, and if he’s gonna throw a fit over being Knuckles to Sonic’s Sonic while being paid a Top 12 RB salary…well, don’t let the door hit you on the way out. :man_shrugging:

On day 3 the thumpers are generally a step down from Monty as pass catchers. Usually a bit less lateral agility as well. But yeah you can get in the ballpark of him for sure.

Sure, but like you said. They don’t even need to be DMo. Even .75x DMo is fine, imo. Gibbs is the guy here and should be getting the Lion’s share of the touches. And the Lions should spend their resources making sure he has lanes to run, as well as keeping Goff upright (OL, OL, OL) before worrying about the RB2 position, imo. It’s important, but so far down my list of needs compared to other areas on the team currently.

Kaytron Allen is going to run 4.65 and probably go in the 5th round. But you need 3 when the defense knows you want to run for three and he’s a very good option. Darius Taylor is in that same vein but he’ll likely head back to Minnesota.

I haven’t really paid any attention to RBs so far this season because I didn’t think it was going to be something we were looking at, but now that it definitely does…I’m excited. It’s my favorite position to evaluate, I think.

Taylor is would love, but yeah seems like he’s going back

Kaytron Allen is prolly next man up for me

Fletcher as well. Personally I like Taylor the least of those three. Mike Washington but if his rumored 40 time is true he may go higher. I assume Jonah Coleman goes higher as well but if he runs slow enough who knows.

UDFA-ish bigger backs: Josh McCray, Daniel Hinshaw, Jam Miller, Terrion Stewart, Tawee Walker

Not that we’re wed to that style of back. The short yardage guy could be RB3.

Adam Randall of Clemson would get you size and keep (or even add to) the receiving chops. Think he’s probably more of a mid round player if he runs decently well.

Hassan Haskins is a UFA, is only 26, will be cheap as hell and can thump.

Well 1) I think Ben was full of shit. You can clearly tell on the all-22 Gibbs got different plays than Monty. And he should have, they’re very different players. And 2) I think in the end it was Ben’s call and he went with Scottie’s recommendation most of the time. Nothing wrong with that, but we don’t know that’s how Dan did it. It’s pretty rare, in my experience, that the position coaches make PT decisions. But we DO like to empower our coaches so maybe so.

I just think it’s a real leap to go from Monty being angry to “it must be Choice’s fault.” There’s about 4 or 5 steps in there people are just glossing over.

I really like the idea of Randall, but he could go higher than expected given his receiving chops. Much more natural runner than I expected him to be.
