I’m not really asking anything. Just emphasizing replacing Monty isn’t going to be that hard.
And I’m not suggesting Gibbs be a workhorse. This years split was good. He should be getting 2/3rds the rushing attempts.
I feel like this has to be said, there is absolutely nothing to suggest Monty is a top 5 back. He’s not even close…in fact, his entire career outside of Detroit he has been average and thats pretty generous. Even dating back to college days he wasn’t anything special. I will give him credit for what he’s done here though. But then follow it with a slight (lol) because Jamaal Williams was a beast here also.
Bruising type RBs aren’t quite a dime-a-dozen, but they’re pretty common. Maybe a dollar-a-dozen in today’s money. One who catches the ball as well as Monty is a little tricker to find, but we didn’t really take advantage of that aspect of his skill set as much as we could have anyway.
We could even pay a little more than minimum and bring in someone like Allgeier. He’s be great for us.
Someone probably already brought it up… But we aint getting much in a trade for a 29 year old RB making almost 10 mill per season. Maybe a 6th round pick. Might be better to keep him. Although it would free up some cash
Yeah I’m not necessarily advocating for going cheap. My reason for being fine with moving on for Monty is his apparent attitude towards his diminished role. You can’t cater to an RB2 at the expense of a superstar.
My dream FA would be Allgeier. But that’s exactly what it is, just a dream. He’s not an RB1 imo and I don’t think there’s going to be a market for him in that role either. But still he’s going to cost more than we are going to spend (I assume).
If I could draw it up the way I want, I’d like to see Pacheco added on a one year deal while also adding a day 3 back like Fletcher. Pacheco seems like a culture fit who gives 110% all the time. I think he would appreciate playing for a coach like DC.
I think we would be lucky to get anything honestly because of that contract. It shows how truly valuable he actually is. Because if he really was as good as some around here think, he would have a market.
Let me clear, I would prefer to keep him. We aren’t saving that much getting rid of him and he’s definitely solid. I’m just being honest. If he doesn’t want to be here or won’t accept his current role I say goodluck The solution is not more Monty.
I feel bad seeing some of these comments. Monty has always been extremely underrated. Everyone has opinions and thats fine. I can only give my own opinions. For me, my mind is blown by some of these comments.
David Montgomery is not “average” or “above average” he was/is fantastic. Easy top 10. Most of us really likes Jamaal Williams and how well he did behind this OL, but is no where near the talent.
Monty was the MVP of the 2023 season for me when he rushed for over 1,000 yards. He’s been the player I was most impressed with. He took his game to another level when he came here and with this OL.
D-Mo and Gibbs knocked on 1,000 yards each every season they played together. They both wanted to be the best tandem ever. Why bother with the nickname? People who dont know football don’t realize how elite a top RB duo is. They/both were a big part if not biggest part of the success and a big part of the regression.
To say its easy to replace D-Mo is bogus. Every team would have of one of the better RB’s getting 1,000+ yards, getting 12+ TD’s a season and thats while sharing the load to another guy. D-Mo with get 30+ carried! Not to mention his pass catching, and his blocking. T
You will find a 2nd string RB and hope he can be good. But finding great RB’s are not easy at all. Every single draft teams take RB’s in the 2nd rounds and later. Where are these great RB’s? Where are these guys who get 700-1,000 yards scoring 12+td’s, catching the ball getting 30 carries while splitting the carries?
Another guy, if he comes out, would be Antwan Raymond of Rutgers . Being a Rutgers fan, I like him better than Pacheco or Monangai. Guy is 205 but probably has room to put on 10-15 lbs. He plays big, and is hard to get down like DMo. He’ll probably stay one more year, knowing RU, it won’t be for them.
Since week 1 I’ve felt like Zavion Thomas was the ideal Raymond replacement. Plus he can also function in the Gibbs role if we’re without him for a few weeks. Unusually comfortable functioning as a tailback.
