I don’t think he’ll cost too much unless he kills the process. Got lost in a crowded room (at least until very late in the year), and not the biggest guy. That said those speedsters are really hard to slot.
I think it would be at least a 5th.
That would be about my guess as well. In that range.
Sign Tyler Allgeier for a few million a year and don’t look back ![]()
Monty average 4.5 yards per attempt . Had over 700 yards rushing. He still has it. Good luck finding a replacement.
yea I’m a bit concerned that he soured that quickly, and that dan soured on him as well. dmo was all in on the grit train and looks like we left him at the station for no good reason.
doesn’t send a great message.
I know I said my peace on this a million times, but I can’t get over how underrated he is to the fans. Its nuts.
I like Monty a lot because of how good he is. Out of everyone on the entire Lions roster I was most surprised and impressed by him.
I hope the new OC has a plan for this two headed monster, and he can come in and convince Monty to stay and talk to MCDC like…
Its not the I underrate Monty at all tbh
Hes a legit good RB and hes great inside the runner, great contact balance, etc.
BUT, he is also now going to be 29 years old next year, he is hitting the age wall for RB’s, and he doesnt have that… super human speed or strength to keep him relevant ALA Derrick Henry or Saquon Barkley in my eyes
Its Jamal Williams all over again, a Good RB that is beloved by the franchise and fan base, but… time is inevitable, and its a position where we can get cheaper and get similiar production. Its a buisness at the end of the day, and the team is gonna have to make tough choices to help the team as much as they can.
I agree with this and while I would like to see him here one more year I’m not going to lose sleep over it.
I do think that DM showed a lot more between the 20’s than Jamal ever did while in Detroit. That is the reason I would prefer to keep him along with pass protection ability with not knowing what happens to the IOL.
But, if gone I get it.
I actually do think, the one hesitation that I have about losing Dmont would be his pass blocking
Its actually really good, and im surprised we didnt use him on 3rd down more this year than Gibbs for it alone
Well the Lions (Holmes) did decide to extend Monty for 2 additional years knowing what his age is. If they weren’t / aren’t worried about it then why should we be worried about it? And if they are worried about it, then why give him that extension?
If they cut him this off season he will have never even hit the extension part of his contract.
I will say this. Of course age is a consideration for RBs and the historical drop in effectiveness as they reach age 30. But I believe part of that also includes usage. Having Gibbs and Monty sharing the load should (hopefully) extend their effectiveness beyond that age of typical concern.
I would also say that financially it would make a ton more sense to release Monty after the 2026 season. After the 2026 season we would save approximately $7.8 mil on the cap and only carry a $2.5 mil dead money hit.
I say keep Monty, get the Oline straight, and hope the new OC can get the Sonic and Knuckles load share back to where it was in the 2024 season. And then readdress this “after” the 2026 season.
Monty average 4.5 yards per attempt . Had over 700 yards rushing. He still has it. Good luck finding a replacement.
People said the same thing about Jamaal Williams…
Dallas signed Javonte Williams off the scrap heap for $3 million and he went for 1200 yards and 11 TDs… Jordan Mason… JK Dobbins… Tyler Allgeier… 7th rounder Monagnai did it… These guys are available every year… It’s not as hard as you think
People said the same thing about Jamaal Williams…
There is no comparison.
People say “I dont underrate him” then proceed to underrate him. It’s cool. Monty has a real fan here in me who knows how good he is and how important he is and how massive that RB duo is/was. It’s like saying no thanks to having both Barry Sanders and Jim Brown on the same team.
I’ll just leave this here:
It’s like saying no thanks to having both Barry Sanders and Jim Brown on the same team.

Whats the confusion? Do you not understand? Let me explain:
One good player = good.
Two good players = more good.
More good is better.
Defense sad
My confusion is you just compared David Montgomery to Jim Brown.
I do think that DM showed a lot more between the 20’s than Jamal ever did while in Detroit. That is the reason I would prefer to keep him along with pass protection ability with not knowing what happens to the IOL.
Absolutely Jamaal averaged 4 yards per carry as a Lion. Monty has averaged 4.5 yards per carry as a Lion. That is a significant difference.
I’d like to keep Monty one more season. But if he’s becoming an issue and pouting about a lack of carries well then yea you gotta move on and replace him.
My confusion is you just compared David Montgomery to Jim Brown.
Like comparing Derrick Barnes to Lawrence Taylor.

Honestly with a wasted season it’s probably a good thing we kept his miles down a bit. The guy has great value, whether on the field for us or in a trade, hopefully it’s with us.
We can find a power back. I will miss Monty but I understand how it might be best for all.
Trade him to NO for Erik McCoy.
I suspect the NYJ are calling and there are trade possibilities already in place and thats likely why his snaps dwindled.
