In preparation for his role as the team’s clear-cut No. 1 option, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been trying out a different sport entirely.
…“When you train in the offseason, you put your body through different things so that you can handle the rigor of the season and how hard the season really is,” Choice said.
“So when you do MMA training … boxing, when you’re punching, it’s all about hand placement and hand-eye coordination, balance, putting the weight on the balls of your feet — the same thing you do in pass protection, the same thing you do when you’re running and planting on the outside foot.”
Choice advocated for athletes to play multiple sports, saying, “All sports correlate to each other. That’s why you should play all sports.”
“When you do MMA training, your abs, your core, striking, power through the ground, all those things affect — kicking, extending your legs, hamstrings, your quads, all that stuff takes training,” Choice added.
I like it, not because I can definitively say if the workout do/don’t translate. More so because MMA fighters are F-ing nuts so I can only imagine what the workouts might be like
I wouldn’t MIND Jahmyr doing the MMA stuff when he’s not in the NFL or on OUR team, IMO-he could get far more injured easier playing for us AND doing that , but I want him to be 100 % healthy when playing this season…but doing both MMA and playing for us, can only lead to twice the risk on injury and missing time this season.
something to add @Downtown? bc I’m being real, he can get injured in the MMA , and not play as much for us this season, OR wind up getting injured doing both , playing on The Detroit Lions in the NFL or fighting in a cage MMA style. is that funny?
What was the 70s show that pit athletes from across major sports against each other in various competitions? The hockey players always outperformed as I recall.
oh i guess I’m not supposed to be concerned for his health, when playing in the NFL gets players injured all the time, but now he also does MMA? silly me I guess nothing can happen to our best RB.
I’m a realist, ■■■■ our seasons have been coming up short due to injury “mostly” and that’s when our players weren’t in mixed martial arts as well, I want this team to go win the playoffs and kick ass in a bowl game, but we need Gibbs healthy to do that.
It’s not bad enough that our players have been getting injured for years, but hey let them practice, spar, train, fight, in the martail arts to?? like I said, I have no problem with them doing that in their down time, but when our season is on it’s way-focus on THAT !!
