It’s good to see Tim Patrick really coming on, and Goff is building some trust in him. The best thing I’ve noticed from Patrick is his blocking ability. It’s not a real big surpise that the last 2 games, we’ve run better on the edges.
Remember when everyone was saying the Lions needed a bigger bodied receiver on the outside, and that Leaf wasn’t going to be it? This was why. I’ll also say this. In 2 games, Tim Patrick has already had a bigger impact than DPJ did since he came over.
That pass he caught over the middle was the same play that was an interception when Jamo got knocked off his route. (non-call of PI) Would have been the same result if Patrick didn’t get to where he needed to be to catch it. That takes some trust to throw that ball to a spot where 2 defenders are positioned about 5 yards beyond where you expect your receiver to come in and snatch the ball out of the air and keep running. I love that play. So hard to defend when the timing is right. Goff and Patrick were on the same page.
Of course Goff was on 18 times that game!
He sure still seems to have legit NFL WR juice. Especially at that size. It’s a little bit of the build up variety but that’s what you get with that long levered body type. Plus he’s trying to fill Benito’s wardrobe void which is a massive one. Still some work to do there.
If Patrick continues to cement his place in this offense hopefully Holmes does what it takes to keep him on this team going forward.
Reminds me of the old proverb…A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
Please recognize that worth.
Tim Patrick’s emergence was one of the reasons I was comfortable not obtaining a WR3 in the draft or signing a bigger name FA and thought a lot of the hand-wringing over it not happening was unnecessary.
Not because the Lions didn’t necessarily NEED that big bodied guy at the X. But because I thought that someone would step up. (Though tbf, I thought it would be DPJ or Smith and I was crazy wrong about that). Never thought it’d be Tim Patrick.
I’m glad Holmes seems to have made the right call again (can’t really call it luck at this point) and was confident with the guys on the team. Timmy P is a great fit and I hope he stays healthy and is just another example of Brad Holmes finding gold. Obviously, he’s had some misses, but when he hits, he hits.
I am still going to shout out the way this team, the leadership as a whole, does a rare rare thing with its players
-they let them heal completely before allowing them to play again
The person is priority over the player
No amount of money can touch this ethos
Call me crazy but I still think we’re going to see a role for Allen Robinson. Especially when he’s fully up to speed and we’re facing zone heavy approaches. I don’t think they merely brought him over to sit.
you’re crazy!
but i also think you’re right!
Um, what? Tim Patrick wasn’t on the team during the draft or FA
Yeah, at this point our trust in Brad should be pretty absolute. Everyone makes mistakes, but you’d think it was all he did, listening to some of the posters in here.
And the thing about mistakes in the NFL, if the GM recognizes them quickly and moves to correct them with haste, well that’s the best you can hope for. Some GMs just stick with their mistakes cause they don’t want to admit they were wrong. So even when DPJ and Smith and Green didn’t work out, I wasn’t overly worried. We had the best guy in the league on the case. Thank the stars it was him and not some of the chuckleheads in here.
One other thing here:
I think Brock Wright game has gone up a level as well.
Glad we got Patrick. Denver owed us a good receiver.
Patrick is really coming on. I admit to being very skeptical first of all due to DPJ PTSD seeing that Patrick wasn’t really getting involved in the first few games but also because he missed 2 full years of NFL football so I thought he’d be damaged goods.
Too soon to say he’s the solution but he looked damn good against Seattle and is also a good blocker as well, would be huge if he can eliminate that need from the shopping list going into the deadline and let Brad focus on getting that elusive edge rusher opposite of Hutch. Reddick anyone?
We did not have Tim Patrick until about 3.5 weeks ago.
I think Brad realized his mistake and grabbed two guys off the waiver wire in hopes one would step up. Either Tim P and Allen R…. Lucky for him Tim still has something left in the tank. We definitely got lucky.
The problem with waiting is two fold.
- we may not have found anyone.
- it was going to take until time for whomever we got to gel with Goff.
The lack of some size and a viable WR3 cost us the Tampa game.
I think so. Hoping he still has something left in the tank.
He didn’t wait very long. In fact he acted much, much faster than most GMs would have.
I guess that depends on your look on it.
I didn’t see DPJ as a real option. So once Josh was lost in FA he waited until the final cuts before acting. Even though Ben himself said they needed someone months prior.
I’m glad we found Tim P. And Robinson and hope they can fill the void.

I don’t think it was necessarily a mistake. According to both Campbell and Holmes, they really thought Antoine Green was going to be the guy. They said he was really showing progress in training camp and they wanted him to have the shot at the outside WR spot. Then he got hurt in the first preseason game and is done.
That sent them into scramble mode, and that’s why they signed both Patrick and Robinson to the PS, and kept DPJ there as well. Basically Brad was acknowledging the need is there, let’s flood the position with talent and may the best man win. DPJ played his way out of the competition, and obviously the team felt Patrick led the way and got first shot at it. Now that he is getting more comfortable with the offense, we see the signs of that coming out in terms of production and effectiveness.
