Detroit Lions appear to have found their WR3: ‘He really does fit us’

You believe it is just a coincidence that everyone he has ever drafted has gotten at least 3 tears with the team?(Chase Lucas chose to sign with the 49ers.)

He has faith in his guys, sure. To me that’s the best quality a GM can have, extreme faith in his convictions. I don’t have any problem with it.

But I think that fact is more about circumstance than anything else. The roster was utterly barren when he got here. He hasn’t spent big in FA meaning there’s been more room for draftees. That time is now ending. Going forward, fewer and fewer of them will be on the roster.

I mean by that logic the guys they chose to pay as UDFAs should be “his” guys, but he’s moved on from plenty of those.

And DPJ in particular doesn’t strike me as a case of this. It’s cheap insurance for an oft-injured guy we weren’t sure would be a fit (Patrick) and an older guy who might be past it (Rob). To me how he got here means nothing at this point. Which is why we cut him.

I think there was also care taken to make sure to allow Jamo plenty of opportunity to emerge as a big time playmaker. Going too far with the number three WR ran the risk of getting in the way of the emergence that we are now enjoying so very much.

Nah I think he’s that slow lol. Looked like Anquan Bolden out there

I think he simply put on too much muscle and lost the exact amount of quickness he needed to be effective. He looked really really muscular but also really slow and lumbering.

I was wrong about him as well. I thought he’d excel. It seems he focused on growing the wrong skillset over the last offseason. I wonder if the coaches requested t or if he did it on his own

Thought I read somewhere that he’s the same height, weight and age as Golladay.

He’s kenny without the suck and blow. :joy::joy:

I’m not sure about this take. Yeah, we struggled against Tampa at the Redzone, but last week Patrick didnt get a target there either and we were perfect (5/5). So size seems not to be the only factor.

Yeah buddy!!! Tim Turing into Josh we need a common name WR!!! Lol

:100: I saw the same thing. I was surprised when he failed his preseason day 1 conditioning test. When I read that, I became very concerned about his work ethic.
Brad/Dan have conversations with each player at the end of the season to discuss what they would like to see them work on for next year. I’m guessing it fell on death ears with DPJ. Much to my surprise.

We fixed it by throwing to a 6’ 4" Jared Goff.

Honestly though, I’d love to dump DPJ’s ass and bring Kaden Davis back. We probably won’t since we didn’t do that the first time, but maybe now that Patrick’s proven himself we can move on from that bum.

I’m very excited to see Robinson. He should be hitting his stride by week 8.
At that point, Goff will just have to put the ball on a player.
Week 4 was just the debut of what is beginning to gel. It’s the beginning of what this offense is capable of.
Best in the league. Bar none.
Sorry Minnesota. Better luck next year.

I don’t think Brad was lucky, I think he knew the lay of the land at WR across the league and knew that come cutdowns he would be able to sign guys from elsewhere that could compete with DPJ for what is essentially the number 5 or number 6 pass catching role. There are so many serviceable WRs around that there’s no need to make any trades and give up capital when guys are just going to be available.

If you look at the process overall it seems pretty sound. Green and DPJ were the original guys competing for that spot, Green was seemingly winning but then got hurt, and instead of making a Trinity Benson style trade or just handing the job to DPJ, Brad has learned his lesson, was patient, and knew that guys would be available and stocked up on them in the PS.

It’s not the same as DE at all, whereas you can pick up a Tim Patrick who can make one or two important plays a game, there isn’t that same depth of talent across the league at DE that genuine pass rush threats just fall into your lap, or are available for trade during the offseason or preseason.

You do realize how rare it is to see a player of Tim Patrick’s caliber get cut? It almost never happens.

The only reason he was cut was his injury history and the fact Denver had plenty of WR depth…… you don’t see that as lucky?..… I do because I know how rare it is.

We were incredibly lucky Tim not only got cut and made it to our roster. But we’re also lucky that his Achilles isn’t slowing him down too much.

We will also be lucky if Tim makes it a complete season because he’s been very injury prone.

I still think he’s a downgrade. If you notice Tim’s route tree is limited. He’s not making hard cuts. Which is ok for a WR3 as long as we’re injury free and you’re not counting on him to start.

I’m happy to have him and my fingers are crossed that he can contribute all season.

He’s not wrong though that WRs who can contribute are generally easier to find than edge players. Especially the type of edge players we like.

And even if it was luck, I’d say he put us in a position to get lucky. He built a team other vets would want to come play for. He keeps our cap healthy. He’s brutally honest with players, which I suspect vets respect. He’s fluid, willing to pivot and admit his mistakes. And that’s without mentioning everything he does behind the scenes with agents, etc…

I tend to think guys like Patrick come free more often than you do (I mean we got Reynolds on waivers, wasn’t that lucky too?), but either way, we have to be in position to take advantage of it when it happens.

I don’t disagree with this.

I think Brad deserves a ton of credit. So does the rest of the FO and coaching staff.

That still doesn’t take away from the fact that WR3 has been a concern all offseason and if Tim works out we’re lucky to get a player of this caliber via cuts.

It doesn’t, but to me it was always a very mild concern, a view I tried to express and share many, many times in all the sky-is-falling posts. And again, Reynolds was a waiver claim too. He’d already had success going this route.

I would have been fine with Hodgins. So even if someone with Patrick’s credentials didn’t become available I still think we’d have options.

Honestly I might have preferred Hodgins.
