I went from Michigan to Kansas City, so I have experience with both. We also still can get brutally cold winters AND a brutally hot summer. Welcome to the Plains. I will say it this way.
For me personally, cold doesn’t bother me much. I can always throw on another layer. When it gots hot, you can only take off so much before you cross the decency line. However, just like in cases of extreme cold, when it’s extremely hot outside, most people here just stay inside in AC. You do what you need in the early morning or later evening, and hide most of the rest of the day. I’ve still mowed the yard in 105 degree heat at 7:30pm at night, it just is what it is.
Here’s some differences between the two for me.
Michigan seasons. Loved spring once it finally gets going, loved summer. Hated fall, except for the about 2 weeks in September during the colors change but then it turns chilly, grey, rainy and it just lets you know “winter is coming”. Then detested winter which sucks from November-March.
Kansas seasons. First thing to note, Kansas weather is 100% dictated by the wind. Pretty much every day is breezy, it just depends on what direction. Winds from the north? It’s going to be cold out. Winds from the South? It’s going to be warm out. The weather varies wildly and is very much a rollercoaster during winter and spring.
I love that spring starts early, we get a lot of random 70’s or even 80s that happen during February or March days also followed up by random cold and snowstorms. Basically, once February is over that’s it for the snow season, outside of the random freak snows. Which do happen. I’ve lived here since 2005 and I have seen a 7 inch snowstorm in April, and I even saw a light snow in May.
Anyways, once spring starts in March, let’s very generally say it this way. March you are getting the 60’s. April, you are getting into the 70’s. This is great!
However, you know that those days also come with a hefty price tag, and that price tag is knowing you are one severe weather event away from losing your house. Every year, there’s going to be a couple bad days you gotta pay attention, someone somewhere is going to get clipped and that’s just the way it is. Hope it’s not your town’s turn or if it is that the damage is fixable.
Then, May hits. The month that SHOULD be the 80s. Well, here’s how it really goes. For 3 weeks in May, it’s off and on storms and rain. Then, you get to Memorial weekend and welcome to summer. You skipped the 80’s and now every day is 90+, hot and humid as hell and this will take you all the way through into September.
Summer - Every day is hot, humid, hell. It’s usually very dry as well. The random day you get a cold front, all that does is drop the temperature about 3 degrees, and somehow triple the humidity, to the point you wished it didn’t happen. Oh! And don’t forget, it’s bug season too.
Fall - For me, fall is the best season in Kansas. What’s strange is, I hated it in Michigan but love it here. In September, the 90s go away and so does the humidity. You get 3 months of perfect weather. Warm in the day, 70s and 80s, and even the occasional 90 day as late as November, but you get gentle breezes and no humidity. Then, it’s chilly by night time.
Winter is not so bad. December and February are the months you may get snow storms. However, unlike Michigan where it’s just cold and 20’s every single day, in Kansas you will get a week of very cold weather, then it will randomly warm up and be in the 40s for a few days. If you do get a big snow during the week, most of it will be gone by the weekend. January is the coldest month, then February comes and you will start getting the occasional warm day to remind you everything is starting over, followed by a random ass ice storm or blizzard where again in a few days, it’s gone and you start the rollercoaster rides again.
