I do think the lions are gonna have an open competition there that will include Sayers, Martin, Kennedy, Lovett, and maybe even Williams.
You would think Kennedy would be the front runner and if that’s the Lions plan they’re gonna eventually have to activate them to the final 53 for good.
Which is my point if Kennedy was on the final 53. I don’t think people would be concerned about our depth.
This question crossed my mind, but then ask yourself why keep Martin and not do the same to him?
All I can think of this they liked his blocking too much to release, the like his ST skills. And/or they thought because of these and and his youth they thought someone might take him.
Tay Martin has zero accrued NFL seasons. so his contract won’t be fully guaranteed for being on the week 1 roster.
Kennedy has 3 accrued seasons, so he is considered a vested vet that would have all 17 game checks fully guaranteed if on the week 1 roster.
I think they love Martin’s work on ST. If you are a top 4-5 ST player in Fipp’s projection then you are safe.

Why is Teslaa so great? He caught 16 passes last year. I’m a fan, think he has a shot to be a good #3, but including him as a “trio” is ridiculous. We have an elite duo…not trio. That’s the fact here.
4-6 of Jackson Martin and Kennedy are better than most teams? What are you talking about? This is completely false. How is this even a thought? Even the guys I’m debating this with will 100% say otherwise. They would be an average 6-8. Meaning all but 1 are on almost every teams PS.
Why is Meeks some great depth guy? What the heck has he done in this league? Like seriously you can like a player and still admit hes virtually an unknown. And not because he’s a rookie…
All your points actually solidify our lack of depth. Calling a career PS player good, or a 28 year who’s never caught an NFL pass, & a 29 year old who’s also never caught a pass as better than average depth is called drinking the kool-aid.
Not only is it among the weakest 4 on down in the entire league, it’s probably among the most inexperienced/UDFA list in the NFL. Theres no basis in reality that this depth group is any good at all in fact. I’ve cooled it on expressing it…but for someone to suggest what you have suggested is completely wild.
I can get behind Saylors as RB2 because of the position. But 3 aging NFL PS journeyman with little experience and no upside…yeah there’s nothing else to call that group but super THIN.

Most teams do not have 4 all pro level skill players.
I’d counter that with some all 22 film of Vaki… But he’s played SO little at RB, it doesn’t exist lol the only thing out there are preseason highlights, and it’s 2024 where the OL was opening up trucking lanes for the RBs 
I’ve heard it reported out of camp this offseason, gotta trust people who are on the ground vs one college game and preseason highlights from 2-3 years ago

Also referring to a position group as thin has nothing to do with what’s at the top. Thin is a reference to depth. Which is basically mine an Airs entire exchange. Although he does reference the top 3 as a factual point. No one in their right mind will question we have one of the best 1-2 duos at WR in the league. No one will question this teams offensive talent at the top of the skill positions. EVERYONE should be able to look at our skill position depth and see it’s pretty weak. Now if you want to say it’s not a big deal, fine…I can see that point. But for someone to suggest not only is it not weak, but it’s above average, well that’s just showing how blind fans can be sometimes.
I think what we’re discovering is you just want experienced guys for positions 4-6. And that’s fine, completely valid opinion. But it’s also valid to believe most experienced guys who end up as WRs 4-6 are simply JAGs and youth/inexperienced is potentially just as viable. Especially in a roster area with very little impact on the performance of the roster as a while except in outlier situations.
Experience or at least youth who were recognized as talented. Meaning 3rd-5th round prospects. Our depth has neither…
I have said we got a little unlucky due to our rook getting injured. That probably would’ve made me feel better about the position depth.
Right, but again, neither do a lot of other teams. And for me that “experience” if they’ve gotten chance after chance and still get passed around like a joint, means very little. Give me the mystery box.

I don’t dislike these guys. I’ll take a Tom Kennedy and maybe one more UDFA who is a rookie or second year guy. But give me a journeyman veteran who produces when called upon as an insurance policy. Theres still room for multiple of your types 
I can’t imagine that he had many live, padded reps in camp given the broken nose. I think that any other opinion on Vaki other than is probably not justified. Other that ST in which we have a pretty good idea.

This is also skipping Jackson Meeks, as he is supposed to be playing exclusively TE however it’s not a stretch to say he is a WR playing TE.
So, I’d say you basically have everything you are looking for. It still baffles me that people believe we were a 5’7 180lb gadget player who refused to block away from a full stocked WR cupboard.
I really feel like this comes down to a perspective thing. Maybe a reframing would help?
The Lions this preseason, wanted an open KR/PR competition. They brought in a 28 year old, 5’7 180lb veteran to challenge their 2nd year draft pick who is 23, 5’10 180lbs. After a training camp and preseason, the Lions opted to keep the younger guy to continue developing him and let the veteran go. The veteran then signed onto the practice squad of another team.

No one is going to convince me that our WR room behind our top 3 is something they are not.
Tom Kennedy - No fear of losing this player as he is cut every single offseason and comes back to the PS. Thats the best depth WR we have. Our #4 is a guy who we have no issue cutting every year out of camp…
Jackson Meeks - was moved to TE likely because of his lack of WR profile. For the record I like this player and think he has a little upside. That’s our young guy with upside and #5
Tay Martin - 28 year old UDFA who has bounced around the league and finally recorded his first 2 catches of his career in 2025. But I don’t really care about him as a WR. He’s our special teams player…zero issues with him making the roster.
Lucky Jackson - 29 year old UDFA. Hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since 2023 where he played in 3. Never recorded a catch in his NFL career. We already have our Tom Kennedy…we don’t need a second.
Dominic Lovett - former 7th round pick and basically our backup special teamer (is that even necessary to keep around with the other guys who are also here?). Never going to be an NFL WR. He is essentially the younger version of Lucky Jackson with a likely ceiling for Tay Martin.
Some people just need to stop trying to make this out to be something it’s not. At least @Thats2 recognizes it’s weak and where we decided to be weak at under current roster makeup. The others are trying to make it out like there’s something there. Tom Kennedy and Jackson Meeks are the two best receiving options in house. One a career PS player and the other a projected and current mystery. The other three are non existent as receivers and/or old in terms of skill players with no resume.
Yeah man you just aren’t about to convince us that the difference between dudes that average 200ish yards and 30 catches a year on the worst teams in the NFL vs the Tom Kennedys of the world is going to be the difference between wins and losses.
Yeah that’s not what I’m doing…but whatever. Two things can be true. One, it’s an incredibly weak WR group after our top 3. And two, it likely won’t matter with relative injury luck. I’ve accepted the part that it likely won’t impact the season. But for some reason many can’t accept that the group is that weak.

Nothing has changed my outlook on the season. I still think we are a 11+ win team and a SB contender.
Which one’s do you consider arent weak after their top 3? I can think of a ton of teams that would kill for our top 2. For the record, I still am waiting for TeSlaa to show he can be a consistent threat and not the occasional highlight reel catch.
Agree here. I’ve got my concerns, but having Greg Dortch at WR doesn’t move my needle one way or another. In fact, after what I saw from him in the preseason, I don’t even think it’s a negative he was let go.
I envisioned a gadget player who basically could do what Raymond did for us. I was a little concerned about his size, but figured Petzing had familiarity with him so that may help him assimilate. However, the Lions need WR’s who block. It’s a key to our run game. Smaller guys can still be ok blockers, but what I saw from watching the all 22 guy’s videos, there was a number of times where Dortch literally finger tip blocked, or alligator armed blocks. That’s a hell no on a Dan Campbell team.
I don’t think the Lions have an all powerful 5 man WR room. I think they have 2 extremely high skilled WR’s that complement the hell out of each other, and a developing #3 that still needs to learn how to be an NFL player. I also don’t think you need an all powerful 5 deep WR room. I think WR and RB are two of the very few positions you can fill with stop gaps. However, if you give me a choice between picking an extra WR/RB, or picking an extra OL/DL, I am taking the OL/DL every day. If I can’t block to open up the run, and I can’t stop the run, I don’t care if I HAD an elite 5 deep WR room. I’ve got no offense, and my defense will never get a stop to give my offense back the ball anyways.
