A second half of the off-season discussing grip strength ad naseum sounds fun.

Did you hear the Daft on Draft guys talking about Markell Bell’s measurements yesterday? Like 99th% length and wingspan, and yet .06th% hand size! Like 8 1/2 inch hands.

It will help him keep his weight in check. His hands are too small to grip a beer or soda.

What really sucks is the top O-Linemen all skipping the all star games and now we have to wait until the combine to get their actual measurements.

Hopefully they’ve sorted out all the measuring issues they had last year.

Well, you have a good point there.

So, maybe my main gripe should be when he loves a player, he can tend to love him too much. He has overpaid equally for players who were needs and players who were not needs.

So, I’ll go back to one of the first posts of our conversation, which was:

We’ll see.

Peace.

Some incoming value for Tiernan and Mahlman for those that aren’t arm length stalwart.

I feel like Ponds attitude is Lionsy but I’m not sure his physical profile fits. Even Amik has 20 lbs on this guy.

I feel like both could hit that 33-inch number after the stretching these guys put in.

It looks like Zuhn is strictly a center from now on. I still like Tiernan but that could put him in the 2nd round. Those are pretty short arms for a guy 6’7”.

Flip side, USC has a 222 pound LB named Gentry with almost 35.5 inch arms! Granted he’s 6’6, but that’s not something you see everyday. What a wild build.

They should deploy the Mr. McGreg strategy. Tiernan shows up at the combine with legs for arms and goes #1OA.

I should have been an agent.

What did Will Campbell measure last year? I think Tiernan is a better pass blocker but he doesn’t have the aggressive mentality that Will plays with.

32 5/8 at the combine, 33 at his pro day. I expect both Tiernan and Mahlman to come in around there. Campbell was definitely the better prospect - more aggressive and a better athlete than Tiernan - but you’re right Tiernan is more technically sound and a better pass blocker, at least as a prospect. Very good athlete in his own right.

I’m a huge Tiernan fan but a big part of that is value. If we were talking about him top ten like we were Campbell, I wouldn’t like him nearly as much.

He’s played all over the place which I find interesting, but speaking on this point: how do you feel about a transition to OC for him. It might mitigate his issues.

It’s tough to say because given some of his center-y traits, you wonder why he hasn’t done it already, but then you realize they’ve had some really good college centers like Nourzad and Dawkins and haven’t really needed him inside (maybe Scruggs too? Not sure if they overlapped). So maybe it’s just been a get-the-five-best-on-the-field situation and those other guys were better centers than guards (certainly Dawkins is, too small for guard).

Then you have to get to the mental side, which is the most important part of playing center imo, and we just don’t have access to the right info to say whether he can make the switch or not. You can generally tell if a guy DOESN’T have the smarts for it if he’s whiffing on stunts/blitzes, etc… but that’s the bare minimum of intelligence a center has to show. Just cause he doesn’t screw that up doesn’t mean he can make the switch for sure, just that he might be able to.

You generally hear through the process about guys capable of it and it might be telling that you haven’t really heard a peep about Ioane moving over. You hear about Brian Parker doing it, Trey Zuhn, Carter Smith, etc… but not Ioane. You’d like to see him take reps there at an all-star game, but thus far he’s opted out of all of them, so :man_shrugging:

He did have a handful of snaps at C at Penn State, but I agree with your point. That crossed my mind as well. If he was a good fit, then why haven’t we seen more. Dude must be pretty special on some level they had him literally everywhere. Every spot on the Oline. TE. Fullback. I have Parker our crush list. I think he could be special as an OG. I’m starting to think our solution at C won’t be coming from the draft. At least not this year’s solution.

I tend to agree unless Lew falls (which you keep hearing, which seems pretty crazy to me), and even then he’ll be coming back from the injury. But there just aren’t a lot of options. I’m with @CuriousHusker, go the vet route in the short-term then see what we have in Seth and Tate. It’s not ideal but it’s probably better than throwing any of these rookies into the fire. My favorite option is to trade for McCoy, but trading with the Saints ain’t easy.
