Yep. And all of the broader decisions will be made to help the football team. I donāt blame the schools, football makes the most money, but I donāt blame May for wanting to get away from that either.

Iām pretty sure he never signed the contract. He started previously that he was planning on signing in July. As a UofM fan it sucks, but can you ever shit on someone for, Iām assuming, a life long dream. Dudes a coach and coaches are driven to do it at the top level or their just really not that driven and most likely not great coaches anyways. Before you start with the well Izzo. Yes, some can be good and just not want to go any higher in life. Most do though.

I agree with this. I expect UMich to keep most of the players. The days of players going to a school for the coach are largely gone. As long as they donāt change the player salaries, I am sure they stay. The roster as it is currently constructed is really not about loyalty anyway, and I donāt mean that as a dig. It is built like a business. A winning business. I expect that to continue with whomever lands in that seat. I think May brought the ability to mesh pieces in a short period of time, which ultimately got them to the championship. Without May, itās still a winning team.
I thought he did in April. Its the timing thing to me thats the issue. I dont know Saban was a college coach and sucked in the pros. Jon Beliene great at the college thing not so much in the pros.
Good for Dusty- Life is Short - cash that check while you can, I would do it.

Actually its easier to leave with a coach leaving now. Look at lsu and Indiana last year. You dont think lsu and Kentucky arenāt tampering as we speak

I think most Sparty fans, if they were being honest with you, would also have been fine with Izzo bolting the year after his Natty, if they knew they would be spending the next quarter century āchasing the dragon.ā

Spartan fan here. Definite disagree. Izzo, while antiquated in his desire to play old school basketball, has stewarded a winning team while the school has struggled with top level mismanagement. At this time when the school is in self destruct mode academically, he is probably the only piece keeping it all together. My only hope would be that he becomes university president. Not so much the AD, as his priorities are not aligned with the modern business of basketball. I think he still believes itās about developing men, loyalty, and teamwork. In the current model of NCAA basketball that leads to a perennial sweet 16 upside. But there is no question that MSU needs loyalty and integrity right now. Glad he is still there.
@kalspa reading your post again. If you are talking about immediately after the natty, maybe I could see it then, while momentum could have yielded a top tier candidate. But they had plenty of great seasons after. And covid took away probably his best chance at a repeat.

U of M fan here. Feel zero slight or slap in the face, good for him. He won Michigan a Natty & now probably gets more money, a shot at a different title, etc
Is that what MSU fans are supposed to be, just feel slighted/triggered every time something isnt 100% about the original organization/program?

MSU fan here. No coach wants to put up with the NIL crap that exists today. Donāt blame him for leaving. At least when you sign a contract in the NBA, they will stay the duration of the contractā¦..doing this NIL stuff every year has to be a drain, with no team continuity.

I am purely playing the hindsight game here. Would you take Izzo for the next 26 years after the Natty, knowing you were guaranteed not to win another one with him, or do you go for someone else?
Let me play the game as a Michigan fan: In hindsight, I wish Bo would have jumped ship to the NFL the same year Woody retired. He had established the program, and nothing he did in the 1980ās improved on that. I would trade a chance at another Natty vs. those 10 years in a heartbeat.

Nil helped him win a title though. Nil helped other teams as well. Like Florida two years ago. Iowa going far in the tournament. And so on. If there is no Nil or a easy way to transfer who knows what may wouldāve been. Btw its not nil stuff its more of the transfer issue. Nil was always going to a mess without rules.
Okay, then, how about playing it with a little foresight-
Option A) Pat Fitzgerald will helm your program for the next two years and bring you 1 national championship
Option B) Pat Fitzgerald will helm your program for the next 30 years and bring you 1 national championship.
Which option are you taking?
Fitz will never make a playoff game. I think fitz will be worse then Smith.
I also think Dusty was going to Michigan basketball really great for a long time
I think that wholly depends on the institution. The behind the scenes support at Michigan has shown a willingness to go that extra mile to provide the financial support to bring in the high quality player. I guess in my mind that makes a coaches efforts with recruiting easier.
For the mid to lower tier schools itās made it much more difficult to try to not only recruit but retain that top talent. Not only are those coaches having to convince these kids that their program is a good fit for their long term goals, they also have to hope theyāre not getting outbid.
I donāt think Michigan has to worry too much about getting outbid.
