Eli Manning has no business stealing a Hall of Fame selection

Agree. Manning should be in the Hall of the Slightly Above Mediocre.

Meh, I dunno. I think the last name is doing a lot of the heavy lifting obviously, but I always considered Eli a premier quarterback in the league.

To me, if a Hall of Fame nod is ever on the fence, you shove them over.

Tough call for me. His career totals come from just playing a long-ass time, but he did have two Super Bowl runs where he looked like a Hall of Famer. His play otherwise bounced all over the place from very good to pretty bad. That lack of consistency is what would make me hesitate about voting for him to get in. Should Joe Flacco get in? He’s had a similar career with the main exception being that Eli chose to retire over ending his career as a journeyman.

It’s the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of the Top 5%

Dude went toe-to-toe with Brady twice, and won both.

Stats and rings. He’ll get in

That’s probably the case.

So here is the question.

Is it about numbers or winning.

Stafford was a drop in based on numbers and yet everyone said he was not a HOF Qb and then he won the SB and now he seems to be a shoe in.

Warner had like 9 productive years? And is in the HOF. He is barely top 50 in yards…never All Pro…

My issue with the HOF discussions is it often becomes more about if people liked them and/or the team they played on and such.

Yes you have your true HOF guys like Barry and Calvin but it is fair to say you also have plenty of boarder line guys and then the debate on what stat or matrix is most important.

Eli is clearly the Frank Gore of QBs. He is 11th all time in passing yards and has 2 SB wins. Which means something. Plus he was a 2 time Super Bowl MVP in those 2 wins.

And I am not sure who said it above but I also tend to agree with the idea that if they are close put them in.

Calvin got in with the eyeball test. The career numbers don’t mean much if you watched him play. I don’t think any receiver commanded as many double or triple team coverage attempts as he did. I say attempts because we saw him dominate against multiple defenders over and over again. The only time I can think of where you could say someone locked Calvin down in single coverage was against an in-his-prime Darrelle Revis. There’s no shame in having a rough game against another all time great.

I bring up Calvin as an example because he’s kind of a reverse Eli Manning. Manning has the stats and accolades of a first ballot Hall of Famer. It’s just hard to ignore all of the times that he played like ass and cost his team in big games. If you put a Groucho Marx mask on him and a different jersey nobody would understand why the Giants kept him out there. But then you saw the throws he made while leading two Super Bowl runs…

I think Eli should get in. As much as I try to avoid letting championships be a reason for someone to get in, he played great in those games.

2 Super Bowl wins in and of themselves make him a HOF in my opinion. Add on who he beat in both makes his case even stronger.

Stafford should get in too and he only has 1 SB win.

You have to rename it the hall of very mediocre. Phil Rivers was the better player but didn’t have the 2 magical Superbowl runs.

Eli was never a premier QB. His claim to fame is the two Superbowl wins over Brady and he was no doubt great in those playoff runs but so was Joe Flacco in the playoffs in a largely mediocre career. He’s a slightly better Flacco essentially.

Two SB MVP’s as a quarterback is enough for me.

What?

Are there any of QBs with two Super Bowl MVPs who aren’t in the HoF?

This is … quite the statement.

Ya’ll think the PFHOF is extremely exclusive. When it is probably the most liberally inclusive one of the major sports.

Eli will get in.

How so?

The two playoff runs were great, going toe to toe with Brady in two Superbowls is legendary but other than that, when was he ever considered a top QB?
He’ll probably be in the Hall of Fame on the strength of those two playoff runs but he was never a top QB otherwise. Saying that Eli was always a premier QB is a noteworthy statement.

Everything you wrote in your post could be a sufficient case to get someone into the Hall of Fame. Your positioning as, “his only claim to fame” is wild, as though it’s an afterthought.

He kicked the shit out of the GOAT. Twice. We’ve learned how hard getting to a Super Bowl is. He’s gone twice. And won twice. And was the best player in that game. Twice.

If that isn’t enough to get into the Hall of Fame, I’m not sure what is.

Well while he was never a move the needle type of guy. He played on teams that focused on defense and ball control and still ended his career as a top 10 yardage QB.

Winning counts. Performing when it counts…counts.

For me he has the numbers and the big wins.

Again compare him with Warner. And tell me how Warner was not really just a QB who benefitted from a great offense.

I didn’t mean in the sense of diminishing that accomplishment as I clarified in my next post and he should and will get in the HOF based on that.
My point was to contest that he was always a premier QB. He wasn’t outside of those two great playoff years.

I think Warner’s run with the Cards should have put the “he was along for the ride in St. Louis” to bed.
