Garrett Wilson with an All Time Catch

For those of you who may have understandably not watched last night’s game, Garrett Wilson had two of the best touchdown receptions I’ve ever seen. But the 2nd one in the end zone, my goodness what a catch. It’s a shame the ref initially called it incomplete. Just doesn’t look great on the replay. Amazing hands.

Here’s the first one.

In all fairness it was incredibly close

If that was a Lion he would’ve been called for OPI because his off arm was too straight. Wilson made 3 really incredible catches last night. ■■■■ Crosby, let’s go save him…

On a highly arched throw… caught without having to extend his body that much… it wasn’t really that spectacular IMO…

ESPN bobble heads were just debating if it was a better catch than Odell’s catch…. and former Jets turds Tannenbaum and Bart Scott tried to argue it was comparable. :man_facepalming::man_facepalming::man_facepalming:

.
Odell had to jump back with full extension and basically got only fingers on the ball.

As former Jet Keyshawn would say….

The OBJ catch was better. No doubt. But you cannot minimize the catch Wilson made last night. One handed while fighting off a defender in a tight game and to get 2 feet down? Spectacular.

This is “not” extending his body?

What I found interesting is he got his left foot down then the left shin, and that counts as 2 feet. Right foot/leg was never in bounds.

So if I drag the left foot then the left shin hits in bounds then that counts.
If it was just the left shin would it have counted?

His foot is basically still on the ground…
and he didn’t have to adjust his body in a dramatic fashion.
He was able to go straight up for the throw.

I caught 1 handed passes in high school 30 years ago.

It is that difficult when the ball is thrown with some air under it.
It “looks” cool…. but it really isn’t that difficult.
I did it without gloves… and these are pro receivers that have tacky gloves and practice catching hundreds of balls per day.

I am much more impressed by catches made by diving players that have to catch, secure the ball, and land without the ball being jarred loose. Wilson caught a soft toss, and had time to secure it before he landed. Just not that difficult IMO.

He was able to get his entire hand behind the ball and “cup” it.

.

.

And…. he was even able to get his 2nd hand on the ball very early in the process. Odell never was able to get his 2nd hand on the ball due to how far he had to jump and reach.

1 shin = 2 feet

Basically… any one body part other than the feet equals a catch…. like shin, knee, hip, butt, elbow, etc.

I guess the fact that many NFL pundits (and even you did) are comparing it to the OBJ catch at all indicates that it was one helluva a catch. You can disagree. That’s ok. The world is full of opinions. But I’m willing to go on the record and say that catch will be rated as one of the top 10 plays of the year. Your high school grab notwithstanding.

I definitely do NOT compare it to the OBJ catch.

I made that comment BECAUSE the media was trying to sensationalize it… and I totally disagree that it is remotely close to that OBJ catch.

It will be rated as a top catch by the media…
but they have clicks to gain.

By media, I’m guessing you’re referring to the large number of people who watch almost all NFL games, certainly all highlights, and then write and comment on it for a living? Not someone who is publishing recipes on page 19?

The fact that people, not you, are referencing it to a catch from 10 years ago might suggest that it was at least leaning towards a spectacular play. No? Can you name a more spectacular catch this year? I know you say diving catches are more impressive, but I see those at least a half a dozen times a game. Catches like Wilson’s, not so much.

1 handed catches are rare… because guys typically have time to adjust and get both hands on the ball.

My point… is that a 1 handed catch… particularly on a touch pass… is NOT that difficult. It just isn’t.
I say this from my own experience.
I am short… played RB.. but have hands about the same size as Jared Goff (9.5 inches).

Again… the “media” guys have to sell something to keep their job.

So why don’t we see plays like this all the time if they are so routine? One could make the same OBJ argument. He didn’t even have to worry about getting two feet down. Just landed softly in the end zone like he was laid down for a nap.

And the one handed grab was only part of the equation. Having the wherewithal to get 2 feet down was equally as impressive. And it was 3rd and 19 in a close game in the 4th quarter.

Not to put him on the spot, but this is what one of the Den posters said during the in-game chat.

That doesn’t sound routine to me.

Watched in real time and called it the catch of the year when it happened……but it’s not the OBJ catch. Still amazing though and in real time was spectacular.

#1… these are not routine plays… because WRs typically can… and… prefer… to get both hands in the ball.
There are very few plays that result in a WR “needing” to make a 1 hand catch.

#2… OBJ barely landed in bounds… and could barely even see the ball because it was well over his head…. because he was nearly tackled before the ball arrived.

#3… Wilson did NOT get 2 feet down.

He got 1 foot down. His shin barely touched and that was why he was given the TD.

These plays are not even close.

Great catch, I still think he was OB but great effort either way.

Yes. A body part other the hands and feet count as 2 feet.

You’re right. It wasn’t a great catch at all. What was I thinking? Mods, please delete this post as it is based on pure ridiculous conjecture on my part. I’ve only been watching the Lions since 1978 so I probably don’t have a good handle on what an outstanding catch even really looks like. Or at least change the title to “Garrett Wilson only makes routine catches”.

Not even close. Still a great catch though.
