hey lionsblood, if you’ve been reading what i’ve been writing for 2 years you’d understand my comment is not condoning MP and neither is GQ imho. that’s kind of my point. when GQ says “struggling” it’s code / a nice way of saying it’s a mess and that the MP doesn’t know wtf he’s doing without saying specifically having to say that. it’s kind of like saying a girl has a nice personality without focusing on her looks. you find a way to take the high road, but make your point in other ways. often by why you omit.
if you have a choice of seeing the real elvis or an elvis impersonator who are you going to want to see and respect? answer: neither b/c they both suck but the point is that people respect the real deal because it’s been earned and proven. BB is elvis. MP is uncle lenny performing elvis tunes at the corner bar in this scenario.
somehow people think their was no respect or discipline under caldwell. the players loved playing for the guy. they were steady above 500 teams. they played with fight. did that culture even need to be changed in the first place or was BQ just not supporting caldwell to help take it to the next level because he was so tunnel visioned on getting MP here?
we know the answer to that question. MP was brought in to be better than 9-7 because in BQs estimation the talent the team already had was better than that record. it had nothing to do with culture and rebuild. every time i hear building a new culture as the path this duo is on, it’s just an excuse for the fact neither BQ nor MP knew what they were doing and overestimated their own abilities. the people who banked on what they originally said and still believe it are in denial.
MP / BQ have basically gutted the entire original defense to get “their guys” b/c the other ones that were here weren’t loyal enough. the defense is horrendous. this is MPs specialty. how can anybody think this is a first time HC training wheels situation? this is was his bread and butter before he became a HC and he’s failed what should be the easiest part of his test.
Ok and my point is you can’t be fake. Quinn felt the Lions team under Caldwell was soft and needed some tough love. It is quite understandable that the team Caldwell built would not be thrilled with new tough love guy. I don’t believe BB nor Lombardi changed who they were to go from soft and cuddly to mean and ruthless only after they won. I think they both were who they were and the moment they became HC’s they started doing things THIER way. Not the players way. That way, then led to hardware. There may be 2 BB’s. MP is seen all the time loving all over his guys. But the tail won’t wag the dog and I’m ok with that. Patricia may not work out, but IMHO it will be because he believes in man coverage and stopping the run with slow big guys who can’t pressure the QB. Not because he’s mean.
No. This scheme can’t use 230lb LB’s as mainstays. They don’t use 300lb DT’s as mainstays. So they evolved not to more loyal guys. But to 340lb NT’s and 250lb LB’s. IE, they are doing exactly what they have to do to go from TA’s system to MP’s. Trying to make more of that is folly IMHO.
Agreed. Glover is a good guy and has great takes. It’s refreshing. He’s an extremely intelligent player and just a intelligent person in general. He did take the high road and he wasn’t looking to make a sensational headline with a hot take. I wish there was more of that in the media but that doesn’t get the clicks these days.
I just don’t think it’s any better to be a sweet guy and not deliver results. My point is your personality should stay the same. You can’t go oops this is my face when we are sucking, and then this is my face after we’ve won a couple playoff games. We wanted a guy who would challenge people. It may work and it may not, but what I don’t believe is that other hard nosed coaches that won, changed who they were. They were who they were the whole time. It worked for them. The jury is still out whether it will work with MP / BQ or not. But what I will say is time is quickly running out for them to prove it will. Like next year or else.
What’s funny is you’ll hear the great coaches talk about how they changed things up depending on the situation. Go back to what happened with Tom Coughlin, the year he won the Super Bowl. He was such a dickhead he drove Tiki Barber into retirement…saw he needed to change some things up…then came into camp that year with a different approach. Super Bowl champs. Being a hardass dickhead is an outdated method of leadership for the regular world. And if you are going to use it, you better damn well win. Because if you are losing AND not having a shred of fun or getting any recognition or respect…that shit gets old QUICK.
