Goff can throw deep? Yes he can!

Yes, but not game situation. Down, distance, is the game on the line, are you down by 14 in the 4th…that sort of stuff. Eyeball test will always outweigh stats. I use stats sometimes too → they can be useful.

What I’m saying… I want to see “deep ball project” presented here, vs “deep ball project” this year. Guarantee Matt is top 5 or close in every single measurable, including pressured, tight windows, etc, as game situations are completely different.

Before I hit send, I was reading through some more stuff…I didn’t see the different years on this thing, I thought it was only 17-18…then I saw you make mention of 2021 Stafford @ 12, which makes a ton more sense. That’ll go up this year too… acclimated to offense, hopefully more continuity with WRs, more trust for his teammates, his coaches trust him more, etc.

Time will tell. I love that ppl are trying to get it right with stats too. Otherwise, it turns into 2 kids in the neighborhood talking about, “My dad could beat up your dad.” LOL

You’re only either seeing or presenting half the picture. If you review what was posted it showed that Stafford had some years where data showed he was not accurate on deep throws. I didn’t create the data, I posted it. It was the Deep Ball Project that wrote that Jones bailed out Stafford by catching most of the inaccurate passes thrown his way. I presented both the data from Stat Muse which in 2019 had Stafford ranked as 6th best and DBP which ranked him in the 20’s. Because of Jones bailing out inaccurate throws. Please note, I didn’t create the content. I presented it.

In more recent years Staffords deep throw ratings have been above average to very good. Goffs has been below average to bad.

The point I’m trying to make is two fold:

  1. Goff can throw deep accurately, as has been shown statically

  2. QBs can improve from poor years or stretches of poor years to regain form or improve form

A healthy OBJ was money for Stafford. Having Kupp and OBJ healthy all year will give him some weapons

good for you-you win , Stafford isn’t here, hasn’t been for over a year, I’ll root for him because I like him, if you don’t or want to complain about him…I don’t need to say anything because I hate arguing over someone that isn’t here. I THOUGHT I argued long enough when he was our QB…I’m done with it. I’ll cheer him as he does well…I’ll give him hell if/when he messes up, outside of that…I’m out.

How about a blatant run first system week 1 against 8 in the box, and with a rookie LT (a full year out of football) and a scrub squad RT… then add in a scheme nobody really knew well, including Goff, and the RAG TAG group of WRs mentioned above…

“Hey kid, nobody is gonna get open, the defense will single our USFL level group of WRs, double our TE, and rush wide on 2 tackles who simply are ready.

Good luck on your blindside.

“Matthew Stafford was traded from the Lions to the Rams this offseason, and Los Angeles should be excited by his ability. Jared Goff, the Rams’ previous quarterback, ranked 28th out of 51 qualified quarterbacks in DART, whereas Stafford ranks 3rd, primarily due to his tendency. to limit interceptions of deep throws.”

Lol, well if I were a young QB maligned as JG has been, perhaps I too would toss a 4th down pass out of bounds (twice mind you) early in the season when the Lions receivers were learning on the job and clearly not on the same page with their QB

Wasn’t too long ago a cagey QB would heave a no hope 4th down pass inbounds hoping for a pick, times have changed, imagine the consternation amongst the “doubters” if we could add two additional PIs on this season

He brillantly threw the ball away, avoiding two interceptions that would have dropped his rating in the Deep Ball Project.

Smart like a Fox.

Silly but there is probably a residue of truth in that, it’s not like the freaking so called GOAT throwing the ball away on 4th down whilst believing it was 3rd down, and that LOST the game

I think that’s something people don’t get a big picture on, when Stafford took over the line calls it forced HIM to really see the big picture. You may have already passed on your #1 and #2 receivers once you’ve seen where the pressure is coming from before the ball is even snapped, in fact you should have. Matt was a total stare down his guy for years, but once he got past that to me he was a different player. It…took…years for him to get there, years. I think the fallout on Goff is because he got to the dance right off the bat and anything less than that since then is seen as failure.

I honestly believe towards the end of his Rams tenure JG was getting frustrated over McVays complete micro management, just my opinion

Interesting data. Reading through it, it rewards QBs who throw deep more often and Goff was listed in QBs who throw less often.

I would hope that with WRs like CJ and Jones did throw deep more often. And I hope with Chark and Williams Goff will. The data presented earlier didn’t favor frequency of deep throws, it just rated QB rating and accuracy accordingly

Nobody ever said Stafford isn’t a gunslinger.

McVays offense became completely predictable. Why it took a new QB for McVay to change tendencies is something I’ll never understand. Glad he did but it’s peculiar in its own way.

Here’s a interesting video how McVay would run the same plays ad nauseum.

I believe you are underestimating him for what that is worth. Goff was a number one pick for a reason and he appears to have coaches that know how to use him and a supporting cast now - look out!

So it depends on which stats you want to follow and why. The eyeball test tells me that Matt is one of the best in the league.

From this conversation, the thing that excites me the most is what someone said about Goff being good at laying it up where WRs can run under it. I hope so, cuz if J-will doesn’t have to slow down to catch it…points. I can see where a QB with a big arm would help him a lot. Culpepper was a crap QB, but he could throw far…and because he could throw far…this Moss dude made that thing go.

Let’s drop s0me hurtin’ bombs…Randy Moss style.

Perhaps I am undervaluing. I certainly hope I am. But I do view him in that tier of qbs that need a strong supporting cast. Good news there… I believe he is well on the way of having a very strong supporting cast.

The team is shaping up. I am of the belief that we will be twice as good as last year IF we do not have an injury curse.

It’s going to be a long 4 months debating whether Goff is any good or not, lol.

Ultimately we won’t really know until we start playing meaningful games in September. Hurry up season.

We deserve it.
