Goff vs Stafford Career Stats (Why Goff is the Best modern Lions QB)

Man they were serious when they said they didn’t want people posting about what’s his name.

I’m not arguing against this. This is all great. Why must people turn this into some Goff bashing argument? My original post had me giving credit to both QB’s, and I continue to do that. But IMO, Goff isn’t better. No where near.

What you said, is it a Stafford vs Goff argument? Because the one guy tried to knock Stafford with it. But Goff is exactly that. But both players are successful at this regardless. I would say Goff does struggle when his first read isn’t there. And then he holds on to the ball too long. Stafford was/is like his own OC. Stafford is one of the best in the game at reading defenses, and who can argue with the way he takes over games? But Stafford also holds on to the ball too long. Goff is better at throwing the ball away when needed.

I judge players by watching them play.

But again, both guys deserve love.

I mean, I don’t think I am, and I was still giving them both credit…lol. Yeah for sure, no big deal just sharing opinions.

Noooooo

Guy uses some colorful language so just a heads up. Really great breakdown of the trade.

Kupp 1st in 2021
Nacua 6th in 2023
Stafford higher YAC per completion in 2021

The notion the Stafford can’t lead WRs or he hangs them out to dry is wrong.

A QB that can’t lead a WR isn’t gonna have WRs who are top 5 in the league in YAC.

Why in your mind is Stafford better than Goff?

I general, they’re both good

I like how Goff is less likely to force things, but I also hate his lack of improv skills

I think Stafford is better than most QB’s ever since he’s been in the league. I think he’s got generational talent. I already mentioned some stuff that makes him good. But the arm talent is above anyone in the league. His toughness, the way he reads defenses, calls plays, and how clutch he is. Like my gosh man just watching Lions vs Rams had my mouth drooling watching that guy play again.

Stafford got some negatives, but the good out weight the bad. The guy didn’t have his Andi Reid, and a good team behind him. He was underrated because of Detroit not making probowls, etc. But when he does get a good coach, and team, he immediately wins the SB, and he wins it in typical Matthew Stafford fashion. Not just the SB game, but the games before it. I’m 100% on my opinion Goff isn’t winning a SB that year. Yes, winning a SB does matter to an extent.

It’s like the Tua vs Marino comparison. Tua is a good QB. If he wins a SB that will level his greatness higher, but he’s never ever going to be better than Marino.

DMont can get 1,000-1,500 yards, score 15 TD’s, win a SB, and be SB MVP which is all realistic, but he’s never going to be better than Barry.

It is more about the pedestal I put Stafford on as opposed to a comparison. Just because Stafford is a better QB doesn’t mean Goff isn’t. It doesn’t mean Tua isn’t a good QB. It doesn’t mean DMont isn’t a great RB.

If you want specifics: Stafford’s arm is enough to make him better than most QB’s. On top of everything I already mentioned, including how he makes his WR’s better. Goff didn’t do that with Kupp. Stafford did it with two players, and a rookie. On the flip side, Goff is no slouch either. Him and ARSB are fantastic together, and he helped LaPorta get in the record books.

People point fingers at Stafford because he’s INT prone. Goff had that amazing stretch of no INT’s, but no one talks about the fact that Goff has lead all QB’s in the league in TO’s since 2017.

People want to bash Stafford in order to make Goff look good. I hate that. I hate the comparisons. I wish it would end because it’s really time to move on.

I’m not here to bash Goff in order to make Stafford look good. I have my opinions on Goff, but who’s better is the question? IMO, Stafford is above and beyond better. But both players have been playing great. And as long as Goff plays good ball, I will cheer Goff on to the end. If he wins a few SB’s, I’ll re-think my opinion on this.

Nobody talks about this? That’s not true. You do. And we have addressed this multiple times here. He leads the league in most categories because he’s had more games and snaps than most.

You mention this while never also mentioning since 2017 he’s also 1st in passing yards (28,492); 1st in passing 1st downs (1,397); 1st in 20+ yard completions (397); 2nd in completions (2,473); 6th in passing TDs (176)**

You should also consider looking at the turnover percentage. It’s a better parameter. For int% Goff is tied with Burrow for 12th best at 2.0%
Stafford is tied with Brian Hoyer at 33rd best at 2.4%

Exactly!

Look at Efficiency not game stats when it comes to QB Stats.

Goff doesnt throw as much as other QBs.

Since 2017 Goff and Stafford are both middle of the pack in turn over %

Stafford 3.10%
Goff 3.22%

Average qb (with 2 seasons played) is 3.3%

Both are above average

He WILL!

What I find interesting is the parallels between their careers.

Goff:

Year 1 - awful
Year 2 - very good
Year 3 - very good
Year 4 - mediocre
Year 5 - mediocre
Year 6 - functional (reset with new coach)
Year 7 - good
Year 8 - very good

Stafford:

Year 1 - awful
Year 2 - injured
Year 3 - very good
Year 4 - mediocre
Year 5 - mediocre
Year 6 - functional (reset with new coach)
Year 7 onwards - good / very good

The only real difference is that in year 2 Stafford was a “china doll” while Goff was tearing the league up.

Not Stafford’s fault in 2010. The Turnstile known as 2010 Jeff Backus was responsible.

Also, he was brought back too soon and reaggrivated the same injury. The guy was actually very durable.
