Graham Glasgow—what happened, my guy?

Yeah, true, but I convinced myself that the OL was the strength of the team and having a highly-paid backup for 3 spots was worth paying for. It’s not like he’s breaking the bank, especially when the guys moving ahead of him would have been so cheap, though it is typically a starter salary

Great point

Glasgow was way better on the right side

Decker has been struggling a bit this year too on the left side

This is not a good draft for centers, Evan Brown played just under 1,100 snaps last season at center and LG, he allowed 2 sacks and had 2 penalties. One year deal worth $2.35 million with Arizona. Glasgow will get cut because his contract is set up for it. He’s 4 years older than Brown and his PFF numbers were lower in pass and run blocking. Number of snaps was less than 50 different and Glasgow had 6 penalties and allowed 4 sacks. I think letting him go was a mistake and said so at the time.

It’s not.

However it could be a good class for center converts. Campbell, Membou. Mbow, Zabel. Maybe Grant. The former two are likely to be gone by our pick, but a strategy of having them play guard for a couple of years while learning then transitioning to C isn’t a bad idea.

GG can play LG and be okay. But, that’s not his best position. RG/C are his best positions throughout his career.
What’s crazy is: The best position for GG, Zeitler and Mahogany is RG. GG had to move to LG because we got Zeitler. Last season, GG was the RG and Jackson was the LG.
I see why he, at times, have difficulty.

Vs bringing in a plug and play guy like Brown who is 28? Not a chance, not a situation where you want to play “maybe” when you can have a sure thing on the cheap.

This is all 100% true. Even pointing out his flaws as I did, I agree 100%.

Well this is provided Ragnow still has a year or two left, which I think he does. In that case, we don’t need a plug and play guy.

Mahogany definitely should be starting over Glasgow.

Personally, I think Zeitler retires, GG moves back to RG and Mahogany starts @ LG next season… Just a hunch :man_shrugging:

I don’t think GG is let go.
This staff is very loyal to guys they trust.
It is understood that GG made a sacrifice for the team by moving to LG (where he is not as good and has a weaker player next to him at LT than at RT).
The key will be Zeitler.
If Zeitler returns then Mahogany goes to LG and GG is 1st Interior OL sub.
Holmes may let GG compete for the starting position and let him keep his salary or ask him to take a cut with incentives if he ends up starting.
The problem is if Zeitler isn’t back.
Do you trust that GG can return to his high level RG play from 2023 between Frank and Sewell?
As for Brown, I don’t think he is a big enough improvement over GG and the cap ramifications would be worse or at best a wash. You would have to give Brown new money while dealing with dead cap from GG.
Furthermore, there is a trust, and tight bond in that OL room that will be even more important with the possible loss of several offensive assistants.

We call this “The Backus Paradox”

OK don’t know why you want to die on this hill taking flyers on unproven players as a choice or betting on Ragnow to stay healthy or not wanting proven vet depth on the OL where he can and has played center and OG, doesn’t make any sense to me and never will. Your take on not needing a plug and play guy on the bench is a bit of a head scratcher. Brown played the majority of his snaps at LG last season BTW.

Have you seen his contract?

That’s exactly why he won’t go… You’re not replacing him for the $2 million you’d save by cutting him. He’s either a starter next year or maaaaaayyyybbbeeeeee they rework his deal, but I don’t think so… Either way, he’s a Lion in 2025.

I’m not dying on that hill. If we decide to add a vet, that’s fine. Brad and Co are far more turned into the roster than I am. It’s just from the outside looking in I don’t think we need to go that route. I think we need to grab Ragnow’s FUTURE replacement. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if they already believe they have that guy in Eguakun. I know they love him.

You don’t think that way, so be it :man_shrugging: It’s fine to disagree.

Yes. I’m familiar with GG’s contract.
GG has a $5.5M base salary but there would be some dead cap if he is cut.
That’s why I suggested that Holmes would ask him to restructure if the plan was to start Zeitler and Mahogany. GG’s base could be reduced and he could be given and incentive based on the number of starts that could bring his salary back up or even higher.
But if Zeitler is not back then GG would be expected to start.
If he is starting he would deserve the salary he is getting now.
Brown would cost at least $3M.

It gets overlooked so often. As a Canadian, gotta give a hockey analogy. The guys on your line freaken matters.

Bernie Nicholls once scored 70 goals in a season and had 150 points. Yet never scored 50 any other time. Why? Wayne ■■■■■■■ Gretzky was his center the year he scored 70 goals. Without Wayne he was a decent player, with Wayne, he had one of the greatest seasons ever.

That’s Zeitler playing beside 2 all pros on the Lions.

His cap number is over $7 million, there would be a cap hit just over $5 million and we would save just over $2 million. Brown at $3 million vs who else? GG on the right is the only deal worth pursuing. Why?

" Frank Ragnow and Graham Glasgow are a lethal duo for Detroit: The Lions sport the most effective interior duo in the NFL, as both charted 94.0-plus grades on combo blocks in 2023."

The change to LG was not a good one. Expecting him to improve there this season is just asking for it. He’s either your starting RG or he’s plug and play depth and if we can’t afford Brown at $3 million to be that guy we sure as shit can’t afford GG to be that guy at $7.5 million.

And Brown wants to start… So why sign to be a backup? Does not make sense. Evan played well this year, he doesn’t want backup money. He wants starter money and a starting spot. That aint in Detroit unless Ragnow retires, which I highly doubt.
