How confident are you all for this season TRULY?

I don’t know what other term to use to describe the hirings at OC? In what other situation can it be that 2 of your 3 hires have been horrible and it not be described as abysmal? Does horrible, terrible, or horrific work better?

I’ll take 17th over what we had !!

We can discuss at Variant Brewing in Alpharetta or Inner Voice in Decatur or Creature in Athens. Let me know what works best!
It’s all good.
Two of those definitely weren’t good but the Johnson hire alone negates abysmal for the 2+years he was the OC vs the 9-13games the other two lasted.

I don’t think any of those adjectives are appropriate for the context entire field, given that Dan also recognized the talent of Ben Johnson and was able to keep him in place for three years, the majority of his tenure.

Furthermore, we also have to acknowledge that the process for hiring an OC changed after the Morton hiring. That particular hiring certainly was abysmal, and exposed the inadequacy of the process – namely, Dan relying on people he’s known (worked for Johnson, didn’t work for Lynn or Morton). This time around, they brought in fistfuls of people to interview, and apparently got more people from the front office involved in the process as well. This demonstrates Dan acknowledging his own blind spot on this issue, and doing something to rectify it.

Likewise, the organization is taking a different approach to ameliorate the historically bad luck of just how much injury we sustained the last two years. They cancelled rookie minicamp to make those players more available. They’ve brought in younger, healthier, hungrier free agents and draftees.

These are reasons for optimism.

You say that “BH/DC need to acknowledge that while their team building philosophy was great for turning the culture around it will not result in SB appearances or wins,” yet you yourself have failed to recognize that they have made such an acknowledgement and have already changed their process in response.

This is plainly incorrect. Wonnum+Moore is better than Davenport+AQM. Mays/Scruggs is a huge step up over Glasgow/Eguakun. We have a healthy TE room again (remember, we were down to TE4, 5, 6 last year). McCreary and Izien are better in coverage than the aging Anzalone. We can reasonably expect 2nd-year jumps for Williams, Ratledge, and TeSlaa.

Mahogany was fine before he got injured; wasn’t fine trying to come back prematurely from injury. That was health, not talent. Same for McNeill.

The secondary could still be an issue – we don’t know how well Branch and Kerby will recover. But this is still bad luck, not bad process: if it were bad process, we wouldn’t have procured All-pro talents in the first place, and such talent is not easy to replace in the short term. That said, the people we have in place to fill in their shoes still graded out average to better-than-average last year.

I’m far more confident in this team than I am in an analysis that fails to recognize the impact of historically bad injury luck – and hence fails to recognize basic probability and statistics. Likewise, I’m far more confident in a team that has demonstrated a change in process (and hence represents an acknowledgement of prior shortcoming) than I am in an analysis that fails to recognize such change while demanding the same!
