If Stafford wins it all again, where does he rank among greatest modern QBs?

Even if he wasn’t a Detroit Lion, this would still be a topic of interest so I don’t care that we have more ink spilled over him. But I was thinking, given that Stafford is likely going to win MVP, where he sits should the Rams win it all again.

I’d have it as the following …,

  1. Tom Brady
  2. Joe Montana (is he ‘modern’? Maybe not)
  3. Patrick Mahomes
  4. Matthew Stafford
  5. Peyton Manning

Stafford and Mahomes are so physically gifted, and it’s almost odd to rank them. For example, if Rodgers had won another ring, he’s probably in this list. I was also thinking about Elway (2 rings), Rodgers (1) and narrowed this to “modern” to keep out Unitas.

I think he’s still behind Erin although he’d have more rings.

I think Aaron is the closest thing to Brady of my generation. He is impressive even at his age right now. Stafford is one of my personal favorite quarterbacks of all time. I wish I could have seen his career if he would have on a legit organization from day 1 like Mahomes.

with another ring I think Stafford is in the HOF for sure. Without that ring I personally just don’t know. So many other popular quarterbacks of this generation who were covered way more. Stafford’s ring was basically a super team. That may be held against him.

Top 5 for me

You meant Eli right?

I would say he is top 5 if you start with Brady and move forward.
I think Montana is not Modern

1- Brady
2- Peyton
3- Mahomes
4- Stafford

Mahomes needs more years before he gets to pass Peyton but will likely slot in at number 2.

Stafford has made 3 WR legend now. CJ-Kupp-Puka

The guy has a freak of all freak arm and is now running an offense properly built around his skill set and processing abilities.

He is also one tough dude and literally played with a broken arm :joy: ok shoulder dislocated but still legend.

He is hard to hate

I don’t know where you draw the line at modern. I mean I wouldn’t put Stafford above Marino, for instance. But if you draw the line at, lets say, roughly the turn of the century, then I would say Stafford has a strong argument for top 10, maybe top 5. Here are the contenders, IMO:

Tom Brady
Peyton Manning
Drew Brees
Aaron Rodgers
Ben Roethlisberger
Josh Allen maybe
Matthew Stafford

Then I would say a drop off, at least until they accumulate more stats/awards.

(I didn’t count Favre, although he did play half of his career in this era..)

I’d have him ahead of Josh Allen but behind Jared Goff.

6th All time passing yards - 2000 behind Aaron Rodgers who is 5th

6th All time TDS - 2 behind Phillip Rivers who is 5th

4th All time 4th Quarter comebacks - 2 behind Ben Rothlesberger who is 3rd

13th All time wins - 1 behind Russel Wilson

Only 13 QB’s in NFL history have won more than 1 superbowl.

If he wins another one along with the above stats then he would be tough not consider him top 5 or very close. If you look at pure arm talent it would be difficult to find 5 QB’s ahead of him.

But but remember when some of us wanted Aaron Curry or Mark Sanchez!!! lol. the good ole days

Also played a few less years than most of those on the list. I think only Russel may be same or less.

Top 10 for sure. Potentially top 5.

Brady, Rodgers, and Manning are top 3 for me. With Tom and Erin clearly being the top 2.

I know we’re Lions fans, and we need to hate Rodgers. But he has every tool. He’s potentially the best of all time. Probably Brady, but not by much

Its crazy to think with another couple 300 yard games, Stafford would be 11th all time in playoff passing yards considering he played like11-12 years with the Lions and had like 3 playoff games total.

What about Brees? If we’re being honest Brees had at least one ring taken away from him. I’d put him up there as well.

About 10 I would say.

I think this is fair.

It’s tough for Stafford, because we now see what he could have been doing all those years - had he not been playing for a slap-dick organization.

That said, it’s hard to rank him higher than 10, because, fair or not, he toiled in the bottom half of the NFL for so long

I think that’s the point, right? He has proven what he was capable of if the Lions had a competent organization, but they did not. In fact, they went out of their way to ruin the first half of his career.

Yeah, I think I was trying to say the same thing…It’s just…

It doesn’t feel right at an emotional level. Like I have to stop and think about it. Blame the Lions

Between Brees and Favre? Much closer to Brees… that’s even if he doesn’t win again.

I think this is correct, though it makes me physically ill to admit it.

I also put Payton ahead of Staff.
