I'll admit it.... I care more about winning the Division than a SB right now-

This post may be ridiculed as being complacent or weak, but in reality you are former more likely to achieve the latter by accomplishing the former…

Just thinking about trading Stafford for Goff and some picks, and suffering through a tragic first 10 games last year… then seeing the team gel, the offense hum, competing to the bitter end with Buffalo, and then gutting GB in Lambeau to end Rodgers legacy…???

We have the #30 ranked D, and #5 ranked offense… WITHOUT A HEALTHY CHARK, JAMO, OR BIG V… I think swapping out E Brown and Chark for a healthy Jamo, GG, Big V, and Marvin Jones, not to mention upgrading to Monty???

With Goff we are a top 8 SB favorite? Blowing ELITE draft capital to prey that Stroud is Burrow and not Zach Wilson seems ludicrous… We add not more first round talent to our OL or to our #30 ranked D? We piss in the face of our captain after an 8-2 finish while he’s working out offsite with our WRs and TEs?

If Stroud is Justin Herbert even… it would still be a disaster!!! He’d literally have to be Mahomes…

Why?

Well we’d save 24MM at QB… but we miss out on Jalen Carter and Joey Porter Jr or Brian Branch so what does the ELITE DT and DB cost us?

Right now Goff, Carter and Porter Jr cost about 42MM

Stroud, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Jamel Dean would cost about 38MM

What group would you prefer given that in 3 years you have to give Stroud the same massive 50MM “IF” he works out?

Winning the division is what a team should always concentrate on. That’s the key to having your best shot at a SB.

Take the steps necessary to win your division. Build your team to win your division.

I think the first step in getting to the SB is winning the division and hosting a playoff game. After that, anything is possible.

Agree 100%… I’m still a tiny bit confused by the 2 QB meetings, and the Okudah trade to marginal return… If the Okudah trade was to create additional room for a Teddy B signing, or maybe a DT, then I can get behind it… I was “comfortable” with our CB room knowing we really only needed Okudah “OR” Moseley to step up, and I loved Sutton all offseason and presumed him our CB1…

So now with Okudah gone, and Moseley, W Harris, and Jacobs all on 1 yr deals… It almost makes CB eminent? Fine…it’s a strong CB class- get younger and cheaper with a longer contract-

Why the QB stuff though? close to a zero percent chance any QB in this class is more ready to win than Goff here in the next 2 years… That’s a lot of faith in keeping the band together for years and hoping Goff doesn’t regress after we spit in his face…?

Playoff wins, don’t care about much else. Win the division and lose the 1st game, I’m still pissed and upset to be honest.

Win playoff games, and I think we will!

I don’t understand the QB stuff either unless they think they can trade Goff after the season and receive compensation similar to what we got when we traded Stafford.

Let me clarify.

The Lions want a QB with starter potential just incase things with Goff don’t work out. Holmes sets a market value that he won’t be strong armed to go over on. See RB-Williams. If the Lions offense continues to churn and Goff wins a playoff game he will have incredible leverage. A quality young back-up behind him that has starter potential is a deterrent to keep Goff negotiations in check a year or two from now.

Okudah wasn’t starting and wasn’t in the long term plans. The Lions were not going to exercise the 5th year option. So Okudah would be a FA after this year. It was time to move on and get what they could. A 5th was market value for a guy who can’t stay healthy and who has drastically underperformed.

I expect them to take at least one DB in this draft.

Smoke and mirrors?

To be prepared for what they’ll do if one of them falls to 6, or even 18?

Scouting them for when they are our opponents? We play the Panthers this year, having their starting QB in our building might provide some insight into what can be exploited.

Scouting them in case they become backup options four years down the line?

Plenty of possible reasons. These visits mean very little. Back when we drafted Ragnow (different regime I know), we didn’t interact with him at all. No visit, no one at the Pro Day, nothing, and took the league by surprise when the pick went in. It’s all about playing the game and gathering intel.

Goff’s value is highest here. This team is custom built for him. He isn’t walking into say Baltimore and having anywhere near the numbers he is having here. This all plays into the negotiations regarding his extension if that is the plan. The lions aren’t going to get two first and a player for Goff.

To @Air2theThrown point. The lions are gonna say this is your value….and this is what we will pay you. We love you. We want you here but we aren’t paying you like player X or Z. We are gonna give you this number and we think it is fair. If you think you can do better go get it. We want you to get it. We also have “hooker” or stroud or whoever here who is legit and capable and we are comfortable with rolling with them if you don’t want to accept this offer. It’s a masterclass. And to my original point all parties are aware that the lions were loyal to him and built an offense around him and people around the league don’t see him like the lions see him…..can we just be clear about that? Once we get clear on that then people won’t get offended or confused when they see AR15 or whoever mocked to Detroit. The league doesn’t see Goff as an elite franchise qb on his own. He is someone in the right setting w the right pieces and the right coaching can do well…….he is more kirk cousins then he is top 6 of the elites……that’s just the facts of the matter. Brad is doing a masterclass on signings.

QB, and a top QB, is in play as long as Goff doesn’t have an extension. If it wasn’t, then an extension would already be reached. If they believed Goff is their guy why would they wait? Pay more later??? No…

Y’all who don’t get it or don’t think it is are probably just fooling yourselves. The league does not view Jared Goff the way people here do.

I know we have a few people on here are little too high on Goff, but most think he is a borderline top 10 QB. That is a pretty legitimate statement.

Patrick Mahomes
Josh Allen
Joe Burrow
Trevor Lawrence
Jalen Hurts
Lamar Jackson
Justin Herbert

Maybe Lamar and Lawrence are debatable, but the rest are clearly the elite tier of QBs.

The QBs on the below list form the next tier. I personally think Goff would be near the top of this tier, likely in the top 10-12 overall.

Jared Goff
Aaron Rodgers
Deshaun Watson
Kyler Murray
Kirk Cousins
Dak Prescott
Matt Stafford
Geno Smith
Derek Carr

Definitely could be upgraded, but as Campbell said, it’s a lot easier to get worse at QB than better.

With that said I am not opposed to taking a QB, but I would not trade up for one and would not take Hooker at 18.

If that’s what Holmes does then I’ll hope for the best, just not my preference.

Don’t worry, as soon as the lions win the division you will be more worried about winning the SB.

I don’t disagree with anything. Just simply stating that there is nothing that should lead anyone to believe Goff is no doubt their franchise guy. But there are plenty of clues that should leave people to believe they aren’t completely sure.

It doesn’t mean he isn’t out QB for the next 5 seasons or more. He very well could be. But everything that has happened definitely doesn’t point to we are settled at the position long term.

I’m not worried about it at all right now. Goff is my guy for 2023 and 2024. I don’t even particularly like anyone in this draft…so I’m not hoping that’s the route we take.

While I would agree with that statement, what do you think his trade value would be? I think there is a legitimate possibility that Goff is traded in 2024. If we invest a 1st round pick in a QB this year, I don’t see how Goff could continue to co-exist with that player in 2024 unless we had major reservations about the player we draft.

So let’s assume Goff has another very solid season, similar to last year and we win the division, but lose in the NFC Championship. We approach him about an extension, but he wants 50mil AAV.

What is his trade value? It is tough to assess because the future contract is going to be tough to swallow. Goff needs a good team around him and paying him 50mil plus giving up a couple premium draft picks would be tough.

I would think a team like Tampa, Washington, or Atlanta may be willing to bite on a trade, knowing they have one year at a reasonable salary and the ability to franchise tag him for a season or two. If Ben Johnson gets a HC gig I could see interest there as well. My guess is a 1st and 3rd would probably be considered a good deal for us.

The premise is that Goff is worth as much the open market to what lions fans think he is to this team. The assumption is someone would be willing to pay a significant price for Goff. The reality is everyone in the league understands he needs a lot of different things to be successful and teams might not be wanting to trade that for a bridge qb……and that’s part of the negotiation w the lions. Goff knows his career as a starter was in jeopardy before the lions salvaged him. It could be a first and a third it could be a couple of seconds……it’s hard to gauge bc what lions fans think and general public think about Goff is vastly different.
