From what I can tell, he’s not adjusting well and they’re unning routes that require the player to win vs scheming them open. How many rub routes have you seen? Misdirection? Anything to force the defense into a look? To me, they’re just lining up and trying to be the defender to a spot
Maybe johny’s mind is not clear or short of ideas, I thought this was lions wide receiver Johnny Morton when he was hired. Can we check j ohnny’s college degree is valid? I think Johnny put the glasses to look like a genius. MC can take the play calling and make Johnny the route running coordinator
I think it’s both. The OL needs to perform better, I’m not arguing that. The flow of the game in his play calling is what seems off to me. I’m not here to analyze zone blocking vs duo blocking and when to employ one over the other. It’s hard to put a percentage on it, but I think his play calling might not be ideal in certain situations.
Today, for example, Gibbs motioned out right (on a 3rd and long, deep in our own territory), did a few stutter steps, and even I knew it was a screen play out to him. Guess what? It was blown up. If I can diagnose it, don’t you think that’s a problem?
Don’t you all remember DC calling the plays? He can do it again. Ben Johnson was a nobody. Maybe theres another TE coach that can step in. DC will fire people or relieve them of their duties. He’s not afraid to do that. Also, I wouldn’t be upset if Scottie Montgomery took over, if he thinks he can. Or can he be RB coach again please?
We (me) have all been complaining about Morton all season. This isn’t an overration.
plus…. you don’t even know if he “designed” any of the plays that were utilized while he was on the staffs on several very successful teams over the past 2 decades.
He may not have been the play caller… but he was on staff with several very good offenses in Detroit, Denver, Raiders, New Orleans, San Fran, etc.
The guy has been around many good offenses.
Pretty hard to say he didn’t have quality input on any of them.
I’m on board the train that we have two major needs at the trade deadline:
OC and OL. You can fix the first mid-season by having Campbell call the plays, and hopefully address the 2nd by prying Joel Bitonio from Cleveland. I think Morton can be helpful in game planning like a non-play calling OC does, but I think he lacks the in-game flow/artistic side of game calling that makes an OC good/great.
