Guys I don’t know how to run ateam. But I know when things ain’t working. I was shocked by how bad our defense was on Sunday. I applauded Holmes and staff bringing in some stud DB’s, and a great draft. But some things still ain’t getting better.
For the draft I was the loudest one on this board praying for Jalen Carter…but happy with Gibbs. But after watching our DL do dick against the Seahawks makes me wonder…why not Carter?
Hey, it’s easy to bitch, I don’t know how to fix it. So please tell me, what needs to be done. What can we do?
I think it’s fair to be concerned about AG as the DC. They started slow last year and they have no excuse to start slow this year with all the guys they added, even with the recent injuries.
The next 3 weeks will be very telling for AG and his defense. We got Ridder, Love and Young to face. Those 3 QB’s have combined to start about 8 games in their careers. AG gotta be able to slow then down and force some turnovers.
I agree. And with 2 games in 8 days coming up, we can either put ourselves in a great position or dig ourselves a hole. Or I guess tread water too. But yeah, we gotta at the least go 1-1 vs atl and gb
I agree with this. Seattle might not have been the best opponent week 2. They played much better week 1.
Heard kind of a funny take on it today. “Aaron Glenn doesn’t have a defense problem. Aaron Glenn has a Pete Caroll and Geno Smith problem.”. Makes you chuckle a little but it’s not wrong either.
I’m actually disappointed in the whole staff after last game. I mentioned about a dozen times about Jacobs being left 1 on 1, like he was a lockdown corner. He got toasted over and over
AG is obviously the biggest problem, but not the only one. Face it, if AG doesn’t fix any of this and Dan doesn’t make a change, the season and maybe the rebuild is in trouble.
It appears to me that AG simply doesn’t know how to game plan. “Rah rah run through a wall for me” is just not a game plan. It’s great, he motivates his guys, but the guys need good planning to back them up.
If Dan doesn’t want to fire his buddy, how about just hiring him an extra assistant who they know is very capable of good defensive planning? AG is his boss, no reason he would consider that a slap in his face.
Yep, and I saw no adjustments of value at all from AG. Ben is the least worrisome, but even he does some head-scratchers at times. This is interesting because we will see how Dan handles the situation if the defense doesn’t improve.
We have seen coaches before in the NFL who make the mistake of hiring buddies as a coordinator and then don’t want to fire them even when deserved. Some got to a point where fans were thinking the coach would rather take losses than to fire his best buddy.
I hear ya and I agree the spotlight is on AG now. I think he has shown he can adjust, the defense got a lot better last half of last year than they started. And I do think it’ll be interesting to see how loyal Campbell stays to him should things go south in a hurry.
All that being said, pretty much every coach says the first four games of every season is like an extra preseason. Scheming and game planning is more focused on what a team is trying to establish vs what they are going to gameplan for in week 14. It’s super early, and regardless of what happens this week and next we will still be in it and have a chance. Even if we are 1-3 the season will be far from over. Odds are 2-2 and let’s hope for 3-1
Yup. I want every person on this staff to do a good enough job to keep them, regardless of their relationship (or lack thereof) with Dan. If everybody is doing their job then the Lions are probably playing pretty well.
@oaklandlion I think for the last game we shouldn’t discount losing the turnover battle and what that means to winning and losing.
The Lions are still really young.
The game plan they had was one that might’ve won with had the turnovers not occurred. We might be talking about how defense stiffened to force field goals.
My thinking is … if they should fire him , they already should’ve done fired him in offseason
Unless it’s the sacrificial lamb formula that lions followed last two seasons.
AG was seen as a coach on the rise getting HC interviews. Him taking a step back for his career from lions is SOLish. We want the lions experience to create more opportunities for these coaches. That’s a good look that continue to attract talent. Throwing people under the bus is not the way to build.
Agreed, and we had 10 days to prepare. We did have a couple decent stops during the game, and gifting them 10-14 points with turnovers doesn’t help the defense out any either. Last year the Hawks didn’t even punt, scored 48, so baby steps!
Through 2 weeks we have allowed 57 points. But 7 points was an INT for a TD and then the fumble on our own 20 yard line. So that cost us at least 3 points even if the defense stops them, clearly they didn’t stop them though. I’d say about 47 of those 57 points belong to the defense. Points off turnovers is huge in deciding games. We really don’t have a defense that can overcome us turning the ball over.
I think AG is a good man, and the players respect and like playing for him. Not too sure about his X’s and O’s ability though.
