Is Glenn the best defensive coordinator in football?

The thing that gets me is the miscommunications in the secondary that seem to happen after every single timeout. That’s a coaching issue and it hasn’t gone away.

Let’s look at the DL talent-wise, the Okwaras arent nfl starters; Commish, Buggs, Jones arent nfl starters, Charles Harris isnt an nfl starter, McNeil is a borderline nfl starter, Levi is an injury bust, Bromart is a project with no real impact, Paschal is a ?, but not an nfl starter as of now, Hutch is an nfl starter and thats it. How in the ■■■■ can AG be accurately/fairly assessed with that DL group?

I’m not saying AG is good or bad, but imo he cant be fairly assessed with having a DL full of 2nd and 3rd string caliber nfl talent

I disagree on McNeil rest are all rotational pieces at best.

Fair enough, I did say he was borderline…but again, without any other nfl caliber starters next to him, it’s hard to assess.

My issue with Glenn is he doesnt elevate the defense. Sure there are holes on the roster. But that’s the NFL. You’re rarely ever going to have studs at every level and remain healthy. Half the Rams D is litteraly 5th rounders or later/undrafted players, ect. Donald is the only player anyone has ever heard of or would want as a starter. Yet the Rams D performs better than Detroits and that’s with our offense turning it over and Staffords pick 6s. Give Morris the Lions defense and they are probably top 12 ish in points allowed.

Why cant this team generate a pass rush, is it AG or lack of dudes who can do it?

I think Dan was going for it so much because he knew we weren’t going to be able to stop them. He knows his team.

It can’t be both?

It can be, but if AG doesnt have the horses, do we really know? If he had an obvious nfl talent ridden DL, and his D was still getting waxed? Then yep, fire him out of cannon…but I really cant put 100% of the blame on him with a DL full of what would be rotational/2nd/3rd string talent on most teams

It’s both. I mean Houston is a pass rusher if used accordingly. I’m aware he’s hurt so we’ll see what he does when healthy. The Rams have a rookie 3rd round edge OLB, Hoecht is the other he’s undrafted, Williams undrafted starting DE and Donald is the other DE. So like the Lions we have one legitimate rusher in Donald. Lions have Hutch. The Rams have 3 undrafted players starting in the front 7.

Point is a serviceable defensive coordinator can get the most with what he has. In Glenns case we’re hoping he can have a defense littered with pro-bowlers in the hopes of getting to average.

Byron Young is a legitimate pass rusher. If he were 22 on draft day he would have been a top 50 pick.

Sure and guys on the Lions could be legitimate too with a better scheme and coaching.

I am always open to upgrading Oline or Dline.

That being said Hutchinson & McNeal are two quality pieces, so the Dline doesn’t have enough talent for AG to make it work argument doesn’t work for me

That is definitely true. But if Young were on the Lions he would be our second most talented edge rusher right now and 3rd if Houston were healthy. He’s really good and he’s a grown ass man and we are a little bit deficient at Edge in terms of talent. It’s part scheme, it’s part edge talent, it’s part poor teaching and implementation of pressure concepts.

As I said on the game thread IMO we currently lack the ability to create chaos and that is what Houston specializes in.

I see other good defensive coordinators who figure out a way to scheme pressure.

So it’s a “fire AG because he sucks” thing, more than a lack of talent? If so, what do you say if Dan brings AG back next season? How/why would a great coach like Dan bring back a shitty DC if the talent is mostly there to be good enough?

The Lions definitely need anouther viable rusher. I agree. But for example I also think had Young been drafted to play in Glenns D his production takes a dip as opposed to playing under Morris. And hell our secondary is a 6th round safety, 7th round safety, Witherspoon who wasa camp pick up and Durant a 4th rounder. The Rams are literally working with very little premium players. Yet we function better than a Glenn defense by in large.

I’m rooting for Detroit. I just think after 3 years it’s probably time to look for alternatives. Glenns defense gets worked like clockwork against good teams. The “it” factor just doesn’t appear to be there in my opinion.

Yep, and he would be by far, how’s that a bad thing?
