Is Goff getting better - Should the Lions trade him now?

  1. No. But two firsts and a good QB would get me thinking.

  2. I think he’s at or very very near his ceiling.

  3. Yes, I think we can.

But re: the possible trade, it would be foolish not to listen to offers. If it makes sense to Brad, it makes sense to me.

Not that I know of. He was a businessman I met at Chamber meeting. He said he was a season ticket holder and the table got to talking about the Lions and this guy started off on his Goff hate. Surprisingly there was a couple others who seemed to agree with him that the Lions should trade Goff.

I thought it made for an interesting topic. So here we go.

Not my friend just some fan.

Let’s be clear ….this is not me …. Just someone I met…. let’s also keep in mind I was one of the biggest Goff supporters from day one. At a time when most of this board sounded like this guy….lol

But I’ve also heard this narrative recently from fans that Goff isn’t tough enough and won’t take a hit. You see it posted by opposing fans boards a lot. Which I find this narrative laughable. But it’s clearly a misguided belief that’s out there.

This guy got me thinking….. there was a time when most Lions fans would have agreed with him. Many of those commenting in this thread were very anti Goff at first. Goff eventually won them over. Apparently there’s still fans who think Goff isn’t the answer. So I felt let’s see what the board thinks.

I think it’s interesting to see how most fans were absolutely convinced he wasn’t the answer and now most are convinced he is.

Goff is not going to get any better nor does he have to. He is not going to learn to run like Lamar or throw ropes like Josh Allen. We can improve the offense with an upgrade at LT and finding a TE that can block. Goff is already playing at his peak performance. The only way to improve is to improve the players around him. A healthy Decker would make Goff look a lot better. As far as trade that is just ridiculous.

Josh Allen and two 1st round picks and I would, too. But unfortunately most QBs who getting traded away from their teams are wildcards (its why they get traded). And in our actual window I dont want to pick a Qb via Draft, especially with no generational talent upcoming (I dont get the Arch- hype). And we would have to use both 1st rd picks to trade up. way too easy to get worse at QB like Vikings did.

So no, hell no.

yes. After his first year and half here, I was convinced he sucked.

Cause he sucked.

But along with the team, the coaching and the player acquisitions, he improved. He improved dramatically. Like on a level, that as a 25 year Lions fan, I’d never seen. So he won me over, cause he stopped sucking. I don’t want anyone else now. Cause he proved it.

This is the same mentality that caused jim Caldwell to get fired for whoever the terrible coach that replaced him.
I’ll bet a dollar that the guy who came up with the idea to trade Goff at his peak value is also a Billy goat gruff in disguise.

I’ve been critical of Goff. I also am not big a fan of his deep ball and his lack of even a little mobility is concerning. Mistakes seem to happen more frequently after he takes a couple hits.

That said, he’s got a great OL in place, WRs that get continuous separation and have great hands, a great RB duo that is also effective in the passing game. He’s got better pieces around him than he ever had in LA. Hopefully he can show up in the big games.

You have to keep him! With this talent and coaching around him, you cannot gamble on a QB coming in here and fitting in right away, especially when our window is NOW!

Besides, to echo the question, who would be your trade options? There really aren’t any. Getting Stafford back for a season or 2 would be great IMO, but that’s all you’d get, this year and maybe next. But Rams wouldn’t, nor would anyone else want to pony up their established QBs and high picks for Goff at this point. Your return would be too big of a question mark.

The only way Goff is traded is if he demands it, given his no-trade contract and love of the team. For the sake of argument, let’s say it’s a family issue and that they need to relocate to wherever happens to be most convenient for the purposes of a trade.

The Lions can’t just get picks. It has to be a Stafford-esque trade: QB for QB, plus picks. So we need a trade partner who has a good QB but isn’t the right fit, or has pedigreed potential but hasn’t shown it yet – think Daniel Jones.

For a veteran trade, I’d suggest the Chargers. They get an upgrade – Goff’s metrics are better than Herbert’s – and we get a good QB plus an extra first round pick.

For the pedigreed potential, I’d say call the Jaguars and get Trevor Lawrence plus two first-round picks, no less than a first and a second.

I believe that Goff is a major part of what makes the players on this team tick. To rip him out and replace him sounds like a great Madden strategy, but not so much as a real life scenario. I believe this would have a huge negative effect that would feel like betrayal to the team. If there is no loyalty to him, there is no loyalty to any player on the Lions… it all goes to hell from there.

So no. We should not entertain the idea.

There were times when his play early on led to me calling him Goof… I mean the guy was throwing the ball away on 4th down, holding the ball too long, etc. He has improved dramatically hear and I will no longer call him Goof.

With that said, Goff can win us a SB and still wont get the national respect he deserves I have been firm in that belief. Problem I have is that Goof is still in there and has came to the surface a few times in his Lions career… albeit it is very few and far between these days, my only hope is he doesnt have one of those crazy turnover games when the chips are down.

I believe he wont and we will win the SB at least once while he is here.

There is a saying that is almost always true in football: “It’s a lot easier to get worse at QB than it is to get better.”

Just curious because it’s a slow ass day at work and I’m bored. What is your definition of “Good QB” that would get you to listen? Like Baker Mayfield and two 1sts? Not that Tampa would ever offer that but I’m just trying to gauge the level of QB that you might be willing to trade Goff for with the two 1sts attached because I’m not listening to any offers outside of Mahomes, Allen or a young guy like Jayden Daniels that I’d consider. I can’t think of any other scenario where trading Goff makes sense.

Did you remind him that he said that about Stafford, too?

I think the best QBs will tell you they can always get better. Goff’s improvement might be incremental, but even if he makes miniscule gains as a processor, pocket mover, etc… it will help. Improving his rapport with Jamo, Gibbs, TeSlaa will help. Upgrades like that. You’re right that he’s not gonna turn into some sort of athlete at this stage, and he can’t make his hands bigger so those periodic ducky passes probably aren’t going anywhere, but I think all players can get better and that holds for Goff as well.

Keep Goff. Yes he can win a Super Bowl. Hell Trent Dilfer did it?

The Lions defense will be the difference in weather this team can

go all the way.

I would agree these are areas that he can likely improve and get better at. When you factor in the decline in athletic skills such as arm strength, foot speed, and most of all the ability to withstand punishment as he ages balances with any positives. The improvements will extend his career but overall I don’t think he becomes a better player.

I think he could. It might not be really noticeable, mostly mental stuff, but for instance I think he could have gotten us out of the play where he fumbled against Washington. Or changed the Jamo pass play. Maybe he realizes SF has called a defense to take away our first read on the 2nd 4th down in the NFCCG and shifts to a different one, or maybe he moves off of his first read quicker, stuff like that.

Sure… trade him, but the negotiations start at 3 first rounders from a team that can be counted on to be terrible for the next 3 years like the Jets.
