Dan isn’t the one making the pick. Certainly he has influence but from what little we’ve seen of the process he seems capable of staying in his lane.
AND we’ve drafted as well as anyone since Brad has been here. The hit rate has been otherworldly so far.

The funny thing is that some of the same people that make that complaint also complain about the Jamo pick, which was seemingly talent over personality. It’s almost like they want to complain simply to complain or something.

Jamo will be fine imo. I mean, the gambling thing is the only mistake he has made, and some act like he is some constant troublemaker or something. I kind of don’t mind any of it because it just puts his injury further and further in the past and makes me comfortable that it is fully back to strength with no more thoughts about it.

Yes. I think the draft classes have been absolutely outstanding. I don’t agree with your breakdown of the draft classes at all and to be honest I’m becoming increasingly certain that we simply view the game differently. No shame in that.
3 quality starters is generally thought to be a good draft fwiw. Hopefully the round 1 guys are plus starters to stars.
IMO Penei, Alim, St., Barnes, Aiden, Da Problem, Joseph, LaPorta, Gibbs and Branch have already shown that they are starter level players (though in Da Problem’s case that is as a high value specialist).
Jack is almost certain to join them.
Paschal has been quite impactful when healthy. I’m still a believer in Jamo.
Then you have a litany of still talented guys that we’ll have to wait and see on. (Brodric, Hooker, Mitchell, etc.)
Rodrigo is useful though flawed.
Even the supposed busts in Iffy and Levi are showing signs of life.
So yes, our scouting department absolutely has been slaying it. It’s an art not a science. We will miss but the hit rate to date is very, very encouraging.
Didn’t realize this thread existed. The lions draft classes under BH have been outstanding. Simply stated, DT is a weak spot on the Lions roster and Carter would have filled that nicely.
I think it’s more the “See, I’d be the awesomest GM ever” victory lap.

They also stated that having so many Georgia Bulldog defenders on the team that were leaders made them more comfortable with the pick.
Its not easy, but I also do not think it was a full “pass.” There is a reason why he lasted until pick #9. Just because teams didn’t take him, doesn’t mean they had him completely removed from the board. It just means they had a place in mind where they felt it was appropriate when everything is factored in.
Campbell was pretty clear that he’s willing to work with a guy like Carter.
I think we wanted both guys and the team in front of us took them.
Anytime you draft a player at 18 that could be had at 34 its a missed opportunity.
In the video they seemed like they were talking specifically about LaPorta and Branch while still sorting thru the 1st round. Brad stated that Dan’s 2 favorite players available were Campbell and LaPorta. Brad found a way to get both of them. Brad said he really wanted to trade down to take Campbell but he found out thru his sources that it wasn’t going to happen. It was take him at 18 or lose him.

Agreed. He had a brilliant and dominating run through the SEC- especially that SEC championship game vs Georgia. What I don’t think anyone anticipated was the squirrelly screwy immature stuff we’ve seen, like pouting, selfish demands for the ball, social media missteps, expecting to be focal in the gameplan when he hasn’t put in the work to warrant getting a place of primacy in said gameplan…and of course the suspension. Let’s hope all of this stuff had to do with the obvious challenges of suddenly having a lot of money, coping with a serious injury, and misunderstanding expectations as a first round draft choice. I certainly hope he turns into a game changer and stays on the field long term for this team. We sure spent a ton of draft capital to go get him. Now we need a return on that.
I mean, there are picks i don’t like. Example? Hated the laporta pick when it occurred. My actual reaponse live to my group chat was what the ■■■■? A tight end?!. But i keep it to myself and wait and see bc what do i know? Who am i going to trust some mock drafter who is trying to sell clicks or a guy w a proven track record for getting talent. I preferred bijan in the first to gibbs…but i never talked about it bc i was told it wouldnt happen. hell, i wanted jalen carter like everyone else last november but quickly found out it wasnt going to happen and moved on. If im being honeatt…the one player i watch and go maaan he is going to be good…i wish we had thought about it…is AR15. But we stuck w Goff and im happy w Goff. Im also a positive guy if i do complain about a player or pick…im more likely to complain and vent in private txt messages then on here about a player. Ask @DetroitStrong or @BigNatty…
I agree with this post and especially this part 100%. It’s similar to how I feel when people criticize the playcalling or call certain things/moves dumb without thinking about it or even trying to see a bigger picture or different viewpoint. Who am I going to believe more, someone whose actual job it is to do this, vs someone who likes to watch football but does it in their free time? Someone who works in the league vs someone with zero access to even local media? Even some of the worst coaches and GMs we have had in history probably have forgotten more about football than we ever will know.
Hindsight is always 20/20 and I can go back through every draft and look at guys I wish we would’ve taken. But the GM making the pick has a billion times more resources, info and reasoning than I do, and when you are having drafts consistently getting 3-5 starters/contributors per draft, I trust whoever he takes he’s probably got a pretty clear vision and plan for.
